Broadlawns is a good but small county hospital.  I have had treatment there for about 1.5 years.  The doctors are good and the hospital is through when you are seeking treatment.  Because of this I submitted an application and was hired.  The job was very frustrating as some of the staff had been there a long time and felt that they ran the unit I was a clerk on. I had a supervisor that had come abroad and did not even know me.  However, he listened to several people that did not like me and felt I should not be in the position I was in. He wrote me up based on a write up that was previously written to me when I was really sick.  His write up was a mirror of the first one that I had been given.  I was trained but not for as long as I was supposed to be trained for.  I was not well both mentally and physically.  But I gave it my best once I had gotten back on medications and I was feeling better.  I was praised by the nurses I worked with and when asking my supervisor 3 weeks after his write up if I was doing better, he answered yes and sited where he had seen growth.  Three days later I was fired based on a made up story that never happened.  gunning for me. Mty typical day was answering non stop phones, setting up day surgery on a computer, making up packets of paperwork, checking in patients and greeting anyone that came to the wondow.  There is many other duties that I did in a day but too many to list.  The clinic was actually a 2 person office that was 1 person had to attempt to keep running smoothly and was not able to do so.  My recommendation is that prospective really check out the unit you would be working on prior to accepting a position with Broadlawns.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Although it is located in Des Moines, it had the feel of a small town hospital (at least during the overnight shift). We were like a family, plus you knew so many people from other departments further lending to that “family” feeling. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Inconsistent rules or enforcement of policies based upon factors beyond performance. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The working environment was ever-changing due to the fact that it was a hospital and was based on acuity. The culture is very diverse, but many people still believe the Broadlawns is a hospital for the homeless for the poor and that’s just not the case. It is a beautiful facility that has undergone, so many improvements, additions. Everyone there from staff to patient is a name, not a not a number which I think is unique in such a large city I would recommend Broadlawns to everyone I know for employment or for any medical care. It is not just hospital for the uninsured. It is for anyone. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Is there a typical day ever in healthcare? As far as the acute or medical floors, I don’t think there is a typical day, but I actually enjoy that. I can’t answer for positions, such as medical records, housekeeping, pharmacy, etc.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I enjoy working at broadlawns. The only negatives that I have come across that could be improved is across the board equal training to all new employees and morrel could improve there are a few employees with bad attitudes and a few that don't care or take their job seriously or see the importance in the position they hold

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Feeling hurried to get the patients registered when they show up late for their appointments and they are new or have new Insurance 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It would be an improvement if all Desks were set up the same. With the same keyboards and new office chairs are needed. The culture is great enjoy the diversity and all Broadlawns has to offer 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Every day thus far is different depending on where I wk.as we are short staff so I get a variety of experience working I. Different clinics and work with a wide variety of patients, nurses and doctors.. There are of course peis and cons to moving around just as their is working in the same area.Im a flexible person I feel so I enjoy it no matter where I am

I worked as a nurse on med/surg night shift. It is a smaller hospital so you get a little bit of everything when it comes to patients, which is great to build experience. However, you do end up with court orders and psych overflow. The nurses and techs there are amazing and night shift is filled with coworkers that I miss dearly. Broadlawns has lower pay than most hospitals, but better benefits because it is a county hospital. There is a smaller staffing pool, so some nights can be really understaffed, but there were some periods where we were well staffed (I think this goes for any hospital). Management is management, no one ever really loves it, but its not so bad at Broadlawns. Plenty of opportunities to pick up hours or cross-train to other units. Broadlawns is a learning hospital, so there are new residents every July.

The new management makes everything more difficult- everything was good before they decided to make the job harder. The co-workers there is a mix of Hs students-beginning college students and people who are over 35+ years old. Some people do not come in and it can throw you off since you might be the one doing all the work on trayline. Some of the workers are nice and the older workers are sometimes rude and they nitpick everything you do which makes you miserable especially since it is early in the morning (depending on whether you work morning or evening shifts). The job gets easier as you continue, but people will make it harder and try to nitpick everything you do because you are not doing the job their way.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The Dr.s here are very good! Our patients get excellent care from them. My favorite places to work are the ER and ICU! Fantastic team work. A very good respiratory department!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When we have so many patients to take care of and we’re running! But it’s fun to be challenged.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
A mixed culture! It’s a great environment to be in.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Well, I work the ER most of the time, so from start to finish, I’m busy. We have a very nice department for report and down time and meals. We do q4 rounds usually and take orders in between. We never know what’s coming our way until we’re  needed. And then we always get a heads up call.

My day consisted of admitting and caring for persons with SPMI and chemical dependency issues. The people I cared for were in crisis, experiencing an exacerbation of their symptoms. The typical client was facing numerous life challenges related to poverty, homelessness, and lack of support in the community. I both developed and facilitated groups as well as providing individual counsel to clients. There was a frequent need for crisis intervention when clients were behaving in ways dangerous to themselves and others. I had to opportunity to work independently with my assigned case load as well as coming together as a team when a crisis situation presented itself.

A typical day involves patient consultations and follow-ups, treatments, phone triage, and prior authorizations. I’ve learned invaluable clinical and interpersonal skills, enhancing my ability to manage complex cases with empathy. The management is supportive, promoting professional growth and continuous learning. The collaborative workplace culture is patient-centered, fostering camaraderie and teamwork. The hardest part of the job is dealing with the emotional toll of working with cancer patients. However, making a positive impact on their lives is the most rewarding aspect, whether it’s seeing a patient respond well to treatment or providing comfort during difficult times.

The hardest part of the job was being a single mother and full time employee. HR has no sympathy towards mothers doing their best, if your child is sick or has an emergency causing you to be 1 minute late 1 time too many,  you will be fired no questions asked, no matter the circumstance, how much overtime you work, or the massive workload you take on, or how much of a vital asset you may be to your department.  
The best part of working at Broadlawns is the patients and fellow employees. We work together as a team collectively coming together from all departments. I have learned so much here. 

When I worked at Broadlawns I liked the job and benefits, but there are a lot of people working there that need to "grow up".  Even though I came to work everyday and did my job well, it didn't matter to management when the department "snitch" would tell on you for EVERYTHING!  Even things I didn't even do.  They would believe them every time and reprimand me everytime and it didn't matter if I did something or not.  I always kept my mouth shut and didn't stoop to their level but it didn't do me any good.  I feel at Broadlawns you are not treated fairly against workers with more seniority.  It's really too bad that there has to be that one immature person to ruin it for everyone.  Some people do come to work to actually work.
