As previously stated, management style is intimidation & disciplinary. Quite a few of the doctors are not very nice either, which is not good because as a nurse on the units we are dealing with, taking orders from, and working alongside them to formulate plans of care for the patients. We also have to advocate for our patients which can be extremely difficult when dealing with a few of the doctors in this hospital. A few would talk down to nurses and staff & would get real irritated and nasty enough to make your job quite stressful. One would talk down so badly to the charge nurses and social workers every day that I swear it was verbally abusive, (and in a mental health hospital of all places!) I would think to myself I think some of these doctors are the ones who need treatment for how they would talk to us or how they would treat the patients. There are many great doctors & supervisors too, but the couple sour apples really ruin the bunch. Caution to any new nurses fresh out of school, just be really careful make sure you sign onto the union because you will need them at some point I guarantee you. There is a union however, the overall staff union presence has 80% decreased so Just be really careful. The job itself is an extremely high stress environment to begin with because the patients are not in their right mind in the first place, which is stressful enough. Then put on top of it administration who are always out to get you instead of sitting down with you performing education and empowering, they will write you up, turn a mow-hill into a mountain & try to make your life difficult. The general staff there such as shift RN's MHT's etc. are amazing, caring and professional  and are really what keeps the hospital functioning. The unit staff displays teamwork for the most part, however the cafeteria staff isn't the nicest. The scheduler is God awful and unprofessional to say it lightly and im honestly unsure how she has maintained her position in the facility for as long as she has. She talks to people any type of way and has ZERO interpersonal skills. The first day i started Ill never forget it, I was told by the supervisor to go see her to get my schedule. When I stepped into her office to introduce myself she continued to look at her computer, didn't even acknowledge my presence and completely ignored me. I proceeded to introduce myself and explain that I was told to come to her to get my schedule, she arched her brow with an attitude continuing to look at her computer and then the wall and said "I don't have time for that right now, I have a nurse who called out and I am in the middle of a couple other things, your gonna hafta come back later." mind you, I've never met this woman in my life, this was m first time meeting her at a brand new job where I know no one and I was told by the director to go knock on her door and see her. I was also still on the clock for training and my classroom training was now over and the only thing I had left to do was to sit down with her and get my schedule. So if I was to leave and come back I would still be sitting around waiting on her at the facility because I live an hour away. That was my first bad experience and it never really was good after that. She didn't follow the scheduling rules and she would go out of her way to cause more tension and problems instead of working with the person to create a resolution. Also, they don't give the staff their earned time off. There is apparently always an excuse why they can't have their chosen time or they will only approve half of the requested days or deny it altogether. The staff there deal with a lot and still keep a positive outlook, especially considering the culture. Basically there’s no teamwork between administration and staff it’s us vs them. Practically all the people I started there with and who trained me left. Its an okay job temporarily because the money is decent but I even heard they lowered their starting rate so I'm not even sure it would be worth it at this point. I'm glad for the great people I met while working there (who are all practically gone) and the skills I have learned which I will take with me but I am also glad to be done working there as well and think to myself I don't know how the full time staff do it.

A typical day at work keep me busy from start to finish. Promptly at nine thirty am was the treatment team meetings, of which I was part. I took a great interest in those meetings, and learned quite a bit during them of what to expect from clinicians. Afterwards, I either attended groups throughout the day with the peers or ran a groups myself, centered around WRAP or life skills, both of which I found stressful at firs, but during the course of running the groups I grew more confident. After groups were completed after lunch, I had time to meet individually with peers, which was both comforting and a joy, as a way to use my life experience and skills to help better a peer's life and hold the hope for them. 

I gained more skill at being assertive in a room of clinicians, as well as how to better speak to peers who are resistant to peer support.

Management was always extremely helpful and personable, usually taking the time to meet with my individually throughout the week to discuss any concerns I had. 

The workplace culture was friendly and open, which was a big relief, as I am transgender and there was some nervousness at first, which proved unfounded.

The hardest part of the job was learning which situations I step back from instead of following my instinct to assist the peer.

The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting and working with my peers. I have always taken great comfort and meaning from assisting others who are in the situations I am or used to be in, and still do.

I was fortunate enough to be able to bounce around a bit but they were not promotions, simply transfers to other depts. My final 5 yrs at BG were as toxic of a workplace as it gets. Management is horrible, doesn’t matter if it’s HR or Business office .. they are all a complete mess. There is absolutely zero accountability, everyone functions off of intimidation tactics, manipulation, lying, anxiety, etc. The morale is at its lowest, bullying is tolerated, HR is not an advocate, CEO is a cool guy but has no control over his facility. The turn around is chronic and management staff that should be let go is still allowed to remain in their position. Hospital is run by glorified managers. They are arrogant and have no idea how to truly listen to issues presented to them in order to make a true lasting change and in return be able to keep the staff that truly work and make a difference. Lots of laziness on managements end and everyone turns a cheek.

It is a pleasant work environment and there opportunities in the company for movement to take. Administration is helpful to the direct care staff for the most part. There is typical gossip between staff just like at anywhere else. The compensation was appropriate for the position. It is a challenging position because of potential of doing physical restraints and the risk of injury from violent consumers. There are mandatory union dues even if you are PRN and you have to work enough to cover the union dues or you will have a check of zero dollars. There is also constant possibilities of being cancelled for your shift if the census is down and too many people are scheduled. PRN gets cancelled first and shifts are not guaranteed to PRNs.

Loved doing my job (all side prep kitchen work), loved working with the patients, worked with a few other wonderful individuals who have had a lot of experience/worked at Brooke Glen for at least 10 years , amazing to have such dedicated staff.  There was also staff who were very difficult to be around, I often felt like I was looked down on / clowned on instead of being offered help or correction. I was also challenged by the difference in recipes by different chefs/director, it always seems like I wasn’t doing the right thing even though I’m doing as I’m told to do things a certain way.  A lot of arguments would break out in the kitchen which would make me feel uncomfortable as well, as shouting and screaming in a working environment ( a kitchen especially) is not a normal activity.

Great place to learn and experience things in a hospital / operations center.  You can enjoy your job to the point I would work it for free at different times when needed. I love operating computers and I also like them.  I learned to work as a team player, shift to shift and co-worker to co-worker.  The hard part is a the turnover from shift to shift because you must be knowledgeable about each shifts doings to give a great turnover report.  Tape labels, notes, problem reports all these things are so important.  My enjoyable part of the job is that I can make a living doing something I love.

A typical day at work entails us working with patients to try and create a positive atmosphere. Running groups and facilitating physical activities in gym or outside.
Management is very involved in the process of trying to make the units as functioning as possible. Co-workers are generally all on the same page to try and keep the unit as safe and functioning as possible.
The hardest part of the job is trying to separate the lower functioning patients from the higher functioning and helping both groups grow in the same community.
The most enjoyable part of this job is watching people grow and have a more positive functioning life

Very knowledgeable psychiatric doctors they are the best! 
Nursing and Techs that really care and want to make a difference. 
Hospital over all is dirty......probably number one complaint next to the food.
Meals portions are small and if you have special needs be prepared to have a struggle everyday.  Kitchen staff will argue with patients making what should be a comforting time an added struggle.  
The over all theme among staff about the company is "They don't care" and they don't.  
Staff turnover is very high, its like they have no idea how to keep good employees.  How did they get to be a fortune 500 company?   

Brooke Glen is a great place to work if you love Psych and helping mentally ill patients.  It's always interesting and I've learned so much. Don't get me wrong it's a challenging job, patients are not always easy, but it can be very rewarding to see a patient evolve and leave better than they came in.  I love my coworkers and manager, they're very supportive.  The CEO is negative all the time but I love the rest of administration.  My manager in particular is so supportive and cares about all of us and will do anything to help.  I feel the pay is fair and I needed a medical accommodation a couple years back and they were very accommodating and kind.  I'm hoping to move into Social Work and this has been a wonderful jumping off point for me!

They are so short staffed all the time that they often give out bonuses. If you need to save up for a new car or you have a $ goal in general apply here. Work and stack up then bounce! It’s not a healthy long term place to be. The staff aren’t so bad once you pick through who you can trust. Management is generally bored and like to write you up. If you want to work somewhere where your HR file is thicker than a Mississippi swamp rat come here. If someone higher up dislikes you forget it they’ll come after you and make your life frustrating. If you have kids that rely on you to eat don’t do it, they’ll fire you at the drop of a hat and your kids may starve.
