What is the best part of working at the company?
Fellow RNs were easily some of the greatest people I've met in my career. There's something about psych nurses vs what I've since seen working in medical & critical care: The openness and acceptance of individual differences. Most of us were newer nurses at the time in which I worked at BryLin, all willing to help and learn from each other. I always found a friendly face in every department. Upper/middle management between mid 2021- July 2022 were kind, supportive and understanding. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Some of the MHTs acted unprofessional, did not want to work and would become angered when tasks within their scope were delegated to them. Pay overall was very poor across the board and it became difficult to retain. Over time, the number of RNs dropped off completely - per diem and agency nurses kept the place afloat but barely. There were several ocassions where I was the only RN on the unit, having to do charge duties (ECT workups/admissions), assessing 15 pts at a time, administering all their meds while doing rounds when there weren't enough MHTs. I was told by the VP who took over in mid 2022 "The most important thing is revenue". In late 2022, that VP of pt. care services also eliminated the break room as well as the nurse's station on the adult unit and crammed us and the techs all behind the desk which was a direct violation to patient confidentiality - from what I've gathered, this is still a problem in 2026 and I will never understand what prompted such a poor leadership decision.

First off, please note that this is a PRIVATE mental health care facility. This means that many of the accepted standards for care and qualified personnel are discarded.

First the positives: Most employees are covered under the SEIU. This Union is INCREDIBLY protective of its employees.

Unfortunately, the hospital has MORE than its fair share of negatives. Low starting wages means that only the most desperate apply; this results in positions staying open (as people find better opportunities and leave,) and only those that cannot find better work stay. This covers medical teams, plant operations, and even the executive suite.

As previously noted, this is a PRIVATE facility, granting the executive suite (and especially the second-generation owner) sweeping control over operations. At first glance, this might seem that it might cut down on "red tape." However, the owner has continually shown an inability to focus on resolving critical issues.

That tone of resigned acceptance of this mediocrity is pervasive throughout the department heads of the organization. Few strive to improve the aged building, outdated infrastructure, or insubordinate and dysfunctional staff members. There is a distinct lack of coordination and communication between departments as well.



The job itself is an easy job. I’ve been employed for several years and I’ve seen so many changes happen. It’s not what it used to be when I started there. Current management has no idea what they’re doing and are basically learning the job themselves. This is due to the fact that new management trains new management and then they train new management. Policies, procedures, and contract limitations are lost in translation. Like one big game of administrative phone call. Contracts are not being followed or being misinterpreted to fit administrative needs. Corners are being cut on a daily basis. Certain managers believe they can change around “policies” when these are in fact NYS Labor Laws that they’re ignoring. Overall I love my coworkers and I love working with the Service Recipients but I wish administration hadn’t a better understanding of our contract and how to follow Labor Laws. Being told your break is a “privilege” and not “guaranteed” is absurd when it’s required by NYS. 

As soon as I walk in,,I will look at the daily menu and see if my food is ready to be prepped if it is, I will asked morning shift if they need any help for lunch.. if not I will start working on my dinner.Then lunch clean up begins when all cleaned up then its lunch time .After lunch  I will start back my dinner prep and time it out with the time I have to get it on the floors...After that I will begin clean up wiping down table and equipment that was used that day...Then I will start sweeping and mopping the kitchen floor . At the end of the day the supervisor will take a look at the kitchen  after that I will wait and see if I get any calls from any of the patients after no phone calls I have finished my shift ….Not that's there anything hard about my job but if I were to pick it would be mopping the floor but it needs down...the best thing I love about the job is cooking and preparing the food as well as working with my co-workers..

I worked outpatient at BryLin.  The director of outpatient needed to be a buffer between the human resource department and our site. Many times she would leave her office in utter frustration over their decisions.  The best things about BryLin is that it has a union.  For this reason, we received salary increases every year.   However, one of the stipulations of our contract was the rule of tardiness - if you were one minute late, you were late.  If you were late three times (no matter the time frame, you were fired).  If you were sick for two days, you had to get a doctor's note until you could come back (like you'd be able to see a doctor that fast).  Many people were fired there. I think that's management's objective.  New hires cost less.  On a more positive side, BryLin has a great reputation for its services.

The way that management handled the closing of outpatient tells you everything you need to know about the agency. They shut down outpatient randomly with no plan. They did not follow OASAS/ OMH guidelines for clear/ concise and safe closing for patients/ staff. They also did not provide information regarding severance pay, health insurance, unemployment options, etc. There has been no human resources director since I worked there, and that is because anytime anyone takes a look at this agency in its entirety, they voice their concerns and then are generally let go. Upper administration is the issue, and they own the place. Private hospital so little protection. The union is a joke. Work somewhere else :) 

As a RN, I expect patient safety to come first, which the organization seems to be working towards. Coworkers can be rough on certain shifts. They are severely understaffed and need pay raises or better benefits. Longevity is difficult to see. BryLin has undergone a huge culture change since the new patient care services director took over last June apparently. The program directors are pretty good, the nurse educator is great and gave the best orientation I ever had. However, the compensation is low. Not every employee is held accountable for their behaviors. Not 100% family friendly job, and totally in the dark ages with technology. No EMR, we don’t have emails...

It’s something about the environment here that just doesn’t sit well with me the building seems so dark and gloomy and staff are miserable and not friendly at all. I understand the work environment can be tense due to working in mental health but it’s nothing warm end welcoming about this place AT ALL. It scares me really, they pick at and about everything everything you do is threatened with possible termination or a write up. The building is sooo old and dated needs to be remodeled. EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING is done on paper no computer use for ANYTHING!!!
I can’t tell anyone not to work here but apply at your own risk.

My last year of working at Brylin was the worst I had seen during my time there. There was significant turnover, all within a few weeks of each other, in upper/middle management. The majority of those positions were never filled. Every year I had a new supervisor (and last a manager). It became very clear that the decisions being made by those with power were purely financially based even at the detriment of the workers/service recipients. It was very sad to see how downhill things could go while still operating as a private psychiatric hospital.

Brylin pays less for my position than any other place I've seen. Management will try to bleed you dry, and the union contract is interpreted differently by management and staff, and the action does very little to help the employees. The job itself I've enjoyed, interacting with patients and connecting with them, but the toxicity of the culture is forcing me to look for employment elsewhere. Other positions do pay better here, but if you're a COTA I would stay away
