Before you start, it's important to know that being friends with co-workers is frowned upon. In fact, if you become a team lead or higher than an entry level employee, you are told to delete your friends on all social media that you work with. If you do not and the company discovers that you are still friends with them, it will result in termination of both of you. Good luck having any type of social life in a company that, for some reason, thinks they have a say in controlling your personal life. I wish I was kidding.

Each day, you can clock in 5 minutes early. However, as soon as you arrive, you are rushed to clock in as soon as you are within the five minute range. You are put in a specific area with specific tasks that are achievable for 1 - 2 people.You are rushed through your tasks and micro managed every hour. Your manager will come by and ensure that you're doing your job, ask you why you aren't finished yet or why its taking so long, and then proceed to leave the area without offering a solution or helping. 

YOU DO NOT GET BREAKS THROUGHOUT YOUR ENTIRE SHIFT. You are given a 5 minute "moment" to get food, if you don't already have food, and eat. There are no seats AT ALL in the store for employees or customers. There is a tiny tall round table in the designated "break area", and if you take your "moment" while you are behind in your area, you will be verbally berated for it by your manager if they see you. Sometimes, your manager will pile on extra tasks, such as deep cleaning, or taking on another area's workload (sometimes because this area's workers are simply not working with a sense of urgency). 

The benefits are incredibly expensive and offer pathetic coverage for even the highest tiered plan. I went to my doctor twice on the highest tiered insurance and wound up with an $800 bill for a simple doctor's visit. 

You never have the same days off. Your days off constantly change and are sometimes separated. Sometimes, you will work up to an 11 day week. You won't get a single day off for up to 11 days. It's constantly understaffed, Shift managers wont hold their workers accountable, often times releasing them early before their areas are completed and ready for the next shift. My shift almost NEVER left on time. 

There is no consistency in discipline and work ethic in managers and employees. Personal problems are not kept at home and are not kept under control by managers. Often times, managers even become involved or bring in the drama themselves. There is hardly any communication between shifts, let alone managers and employees. 

If you're looking to go up on the ladder and become a team lead of manager, it's incredibly underhanded and based a bit on favoritism. If you DO get promoted, it takes half a year or more to get your pay raise. You will work in your new position for at least three months without receiving your pay raise and you are not compensated for this time when you finally get it. 

This job is a job for someone who is just starting out or just hard up for money. If you're looking to be treated like a robot and work like a dog without EVER getting a raise or any type of a benefit, this is the place for you.

The compensation is excellent for what it is: $13 to be a cashier is great. But at what expense?
- With your 8ish hour shift, you only get 10 minutes as your "moment" which is both your lunch and your break. Nothing else, besides your restroom breaks which you can't take if someone in your shift is on their moment. 
- If those 10 minutes are your lunch, think how fast your have to eat to consume enough to be satisfied and not be hungry. This will take a toll on your digestion short term or in the long run. 
- You're on your feet the entire shift... You can't even sit for your "moment" which is likely your lunch. The restroom is the only place you can sit. This is especially hard of you're overweight; it will take a toll on your knees & feet. 
- Expect to have close to no social life. You will work weekends. You will work holidays. 
- All new employees start at the 2p-10p shift if you want the day shift. That is a terrible schedule for a family where the other spouse works regular hours and if your kids go to school, you will hardly see them. You can eventually move to an earlier shift, but that depends on availability and if they consider you a good employee. People that have been there longer get priority... so it can be weeks, months, who knows til you get the shift you want. 
- Super micro-managed in every sense. You're just a number, not a human to this company. You always have to be in dress code, no exceptions. You can't be 1 minute late. You are always watched and listened to... there's cameras everywhere and I believe microphones at every register, for sure in some. 
- You can't have your cell phone on you at all... if you're seen with it you can be terminated on the spot. This was one of the toughest for me because I have a kid I wanted to make sure I could check up on throughout the day and wanted to be able to get a hold of in case of an emergency. But you're expected to give out a number they have for employees in case of an emergency. If your family loses that direct number and they need to get a hold of you, they're SOL because you don't have your phone on you and the Google number does not go to the store... or to anyone. That Google # is automated. 
- Expect to work outside the scope of being a cashier. You will clean, stock, and do little daily chores. 
- There's room for growth within the company. If you're a good employee, you can become team lead. If you develop friendships, you'd have to cut those off as you're promoted. I guess the mentality is you can't be friends with your subordinates... not even outside of work. 
- Management is wonky. There were several inconsistencies with information passed on. I would be told to do something one way by one manager then get told to do it another way by another manager. I always went by what the highest rank person told me. 
- As an employee, you park far and will mostly walk out by yourself at night because although shifts end around the same time, due to the time next person to use the resister comes in and due to how long it takes you to close your register, no one really gets out at the same time. So that's something to consider and if you get hired on keep in mind to just look out when you're shift is over. 
- This is the type of place where "the costumer is always right" so expect to be treated like so. It's a retail job and many customers are extremely rude and think they're better than you because they're on the other side of that counter.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Absolutely positively the worst company I've ever worked for.  They truly represent much of what is wrong with our culture today. Mass consumerism at its absolute worst. When one combines that with the mistreatment of its employees, well, what else can be said. 

While I did meet some wonderful people. The lack of culture in general overall sensitivity towards its workforce with something I could no longer tolerate. It is safe to say that the remainder of my life will be a crusade that will speak to the world about what Buc-ee's truly is. A typical American company that puts its love for the almighty dollar ahead of virtue itself. I most certainly would not recommend working or investing any of your time or efforts into this company. They are simply not worth it.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Everyday work life. Their managers epitomize what it means to make mountains out of molehills. Instead of reducing the complicated to the simple. They maximize the simple into something mundane and overly complicated. Absolute incompetence from the ownership all the way down to management.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
What work culture? This company pretends as though they're doing you a favor. When in point of fact, they use that against you the first chance that they get. According to them, the salary that they pay you is justification for their mistreatment and contempt of their workforce. The only so-called culture that exists is the one that is created by the employees. And even in that, the company does everything it can to work against you.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Multiple calls over the in-store intercom. A constant flow of employees being called to the manager's office. Only so they can harass and belittle you over something that is absolutely inconsequential to your work into the company itself. 

They videotape absolutely everything and do so to your detriment. When they could use such a tool to teach, inform and improve employee work life. They choose rather to weaponize the very technology that they invested in. As far as they are concerned it's their world and you simply are a cog in the wheel. If one of your teeth breaks by no fault of your own, they will discard you like yesterday's news. 

For example, one of my friends called in one day. His grandfather had passed away and he wanted to attend his funeral. He worked overnight, and new he wouldn't be able to go to work as a result of his grief and his desire to grieve with his family. The company knew this, and instead of providing him the time that he needed to grieve his grandfather's loss. The company fired him. 
If I had a son or daughter or friend or family member, this place would be the last that I would ever recommend to them. They treat their employees like garbage.

They will work you until they are finished with you. Regardless if you have a legitimate reason, the General Manager doesn't care. 

Absolutely no leniency no matter how long you have worked there, how hard a worker you are, you're thrown away. Their three strike policy is the worst. Even having legitimate reasons, they could still fire you. They have an outdated and flawed system, still using a mindset from the 80-90s. 

Can't even have basic schedules like almost any other international company. Can't pay their employees good enough but they will still open up another store costing one million. Firing more people than they should. But they then put more work on current employees than hire new workers. Deli workers working 60-70 hours a week because they refuse to hire more people. Or they can't find the people.

Entire reason why employees can't do anything is because of their phone policy, can't film or record them if you're an average employee. But if you're a team lead or manager you can. I doubt its because people would be on their phone, its because employees could catch managers showing their true colors.

Also they have changed their pricing board more than once. They can easily lower employees hours to 35 hours but somehow its considered "full-time." 

They have changed how we do clean procedures many times. Before they changed everything, it was fine, we cleaned well. But apparently they know my job better than myself who knows how long it takes to do certain jobs.

Now? Its down to time management. Dictating when we do certain objectives and within the small time frame they set. And only completed by one person to clean 16 gas pumps every night. Expecting us to have a set cleaning standard that is impossible to achieve. And that person to take out the trash for all the trash cans by one person. 

Corporate heads who have no idea what normal employees have to go through, other than looking at spreadsheets and graphs. Acting like they know much better than normal people on the ground do. 

When it comes to managers, its all over the place. One manager telling an employee to do something while another tells them something entirely different to do. And wheres the GM? Sitting in the office doing who knows what. Only in brief situations where he actually comes out of his hole. Usually to talk to some news crew about what ever stuff is going on. And when situations that do require him to actually remember he is a manager, he barely lifts a finger because "thats why you have a maintenance manager." 

If you're desperate for money and don't mind being abused and having absolutely no opportunity to spend time with your family or friends outside of work. Then bucees is the place for you. I've never worked somewhere that treated you so poorly. You're told that you're never going to be good enough and always reminded how easily you could be replace. Good employees are treated the worst and butt kissers are promoted. Management will mock you and make fun of you and do not care about you at all. This place made my anxiety so bad. I also became highly depressed because of it. I was able to escape the horrors of bucees and I always try to tell other people to stay away.

If you're a brown-noser then you'll fit perfectly here. Favoritism is insane here. I was mocked and ridiculed by my manager quite a lot. You always walk on eggshells wondering when they're going to explode on you next. It's an awful feeling and I just hope it didn't do any long-term damage on my health.

The only good thing about this job besides the pay and the health insurance which honestly the health insurance isn't even that great but it's okay. Is your co-workers. Obviously you're not going to get along with everyone but I've met a lot of amazing people at Buc-ee's. I made a lot of friends and there's a lot of good people who work for Buc-ee's. I'm not speaking about management though. Management is just awful and you should never trust them. But my coworkers I do miss them. It was the only thing that kept me from spiraling in complete darkness. I know you should never allow anything to make you feel awful but it was really hard when you can't just quit because you got to pay bills.

You get a 10-15 minutes break. They just made benches for our little eating break. Though those are probably going to be taken away quite quickly. They make you work every single holiday and they tell you that you're privileged for working at bucees and you shouldn't even want to celebrate holidays because you get to work at Buc-ee's. The dress code is absolutely ridiculous and you look ridiculous. Also you can only have red or pink nails which isn't terrible but every now and then you'd like a different color. These people are extremely strict and they treat you like a slave. Though I've heard other Buc-ee's are different.

My thing is I know bucees pays a lot but if you value your mental health and your physical health you will stay away.

For a progressing adolescent or a reasonable middle-ager, you can learn and earn plenty. $18 P/H with full time benefits are good, but policy changed while I was employed at Buc-ee's regarding medical leave for the worse..
The company is a very bureaucratic place. That is both good and bad, you can expect to work with people that aren't unreasonably lazy, but a good worker may be terminated for some discount able reason (late by one minute three times.) 
I can say that I believe most of the people that I worked with understood that everyone relied on each other to succeed, or just scrape by, and made genuine efforts to help their shift-mates.
Mid-tier management tends to be always helping (black shirts), but GM's, Dept. Managers, or District usually won't except for extreme cases, but will surely comment on if the floor gets dirtied in a blitzing paced 10 x 5 area of sweat and hot grease.
I'm guessing it is because the Dept. Managers are responsible for their section of the store, while the General Managers are holding the Dept Managers accountable... I can't really appreciate that system.
You will work with a wide array of people. Some of which tend to have a bleak outlook on life, and either you will be assimilated into the time-wasting talk and ideals, try to cultivate your own productive conversations with those that have open ears, but you won't get far being silent due to the heavy communication that is necessary to stay ahead. With the diverse span of people, you will likely clash with a couple and probably dislike your preceeding shift because of being left in the weeds during shift change.
Oh, and if you are applying for the deli, do not expect to leave as the clock turns to shift end. Even if you are 99% done with your closing shift duties, you are expected to help every sub-dept finish up, help the dishwasher after a busy day, and/or roll paper containers of candied nuts.
Overall, not a bad place but get your money and use it wisely. I would suggest to keep an acquaintance friendly distance with most of your co-workers, because the balance of work / life is extremely difficult to maintain; those that do are most likely getting that extra energy elsewhere.

I wouldn't say favoritism is the problem like most people think. The managers come in different moods and sometimes take it out on their employees. When they are mad or upset with you they put  you in spots they know you don't like and give you bad schedules. The pay is good which is why most people stay. They appreciate their good workers but show it in the wrong way. They tend to throw everything at them and make them work when nobody else wants to because they know they'll do it. The lazy people get whatever they want and do whatever they want with no consequences as if management is scared to tell them anything but will gossip about them to other employees and managers. They don't give you slack even when you are a good employee.domt be a second late and you're written up.  I feel like they try to push you so hard to see what you can do but you should encourage your employees not talk down on them. They also promote most of the people who are lazy and gossip and tattle to management about everything. A lot of the team leaders think they shouldn't have to work after they become one. Most of the co workers were fun and easy to get along with it's the managers that drive them apart. If you get along with someone they will separate you from them even if you work good together and will put you with someone that works at different level than you which would frustrate anyone and that's what drives them apart. Believe me when I say they do this on purpose. One manager always tries to get other mangers in trouble and will scold you for being nice and talking to the other managers he doesn't like. That is very unprofessional. They micromanage and have nothing better to do than to pick at any little thing when they're bored. I tried so hard to enjoy my job and come in with a good attitude but eventually found myself dreading going there everyday. Nobody deserves to wonder what are they going to get in trouble for today or what team leader is gonna pick on me today because their friend doesn't like them.  Don't let the pay make you stay because you will be miserable. It's depressing after awhile because you try so hard to get no where and for managers to talk badly about you.

I used to work maintenance at Buc-ee's. Depending which shift you worked, management/leadership was either strict or lacking to the point of distressing. Out of the 7 total in-store higher-ups I was assigned through my employment, 4 were vituperative at worst, and uncomplimentary at best. I asked to switch shifts for that very reason.

There are plenty of rules, but most of what employees are critiqued on are the finer details. Certain Rules and regulations can require more practice than others (i.e. regular solo-uniform checks, walking quickly, ample customer interaction), but most are common in any area of professional work. Much of anyone's improvement will come from self-discipline, not just following the rules.

The uniform items you can purchase from the store itself are a short sleeved polo, a long sleeved polo, a windbreaker, a vest, and a jacket. The shirts are 100% polyester, making them unable to wrinkle easily, but they aren't breathable. The items are also expensive depending on your funds. One short sleeved polo is close to $17.00 for a MD/LG. The expense for non-slip shoes, khaki slacks/pants, and one or more uniform shirts can add up quite quickly.

The second hardest part of working at Buc-ee's will be the lack of time for repose. Employees aren't allowed to sit down, they're allowed 3-4 minutes on average for bathroom breaks, permission is needed to refill any drinks you put in your personal mug, and there isn't an allotted time to eat. Buc-ee's has 'moments.' These are 5-7 minutes were the employee can either eat or have some "down" time from work.

The hardest part will be the customers. While my department could be mentally and physically taxing, interactions with these particular kinds of people are exhausting. There isn't backup from management, so unless a customer becomes belligerent or psychical, disgusting comments and rude power moves are normal.

First real job in customer service, its good. The co-workers can be good, the store can be clean, great work environment. I like this job, it would be a great job and would be comparable to a company like HEB if it weren't for a couple of things.... Management has their favorites, breaks are 10 minutes without sitting (varies on location) no worker discount, okay at best benefits, micro management is a must with this company. Corporate and HR can be ridiculous, yeti cups in my Bucee's weren't allowed for awhile, then the manager allowed them. Only to have Corp disallow them 2 weeks later and then claim it was in the handbook- but they had just had updated the handbook. Manager forgets half the time the days you requested off, you have to remind him several times a week just to get your days off. Oh and PTO? Dream about it, they act like you never request it or forget about it, if not, deny you with no answer. As a cashier you have to ask to go the restroom or get something at any time from your shift leader, he/she also has to set an order of whom may go to break first, you may be first at 5 o'clock, or last at 6:50 for 2-10 shift. Take too long for a drink of coffee? They rush you back to your register. Get along too well with someone? Cant be having that, they separate you for a couple of weeks. Warehouse managed to create a few chairs for our "break area" (2 milk crates with a box cover) only to have district manager order to break them down. Check behind every register, go ahead, you'll find a mic listening in to conversation. A camera in every corner of the store and warehouse, yet their planning on installing another 20+. Go ahead and call the Bucee's phone number for assistance, I dare you....it's just a recording to go online, every store has their personal phone. And only shift leaders and up can have a phone, still carrying your phone even though your not of higher management? They make you put it in your "locker"... without a lock. 1 minute late?Cant have that, gotta give you a warning. The whole company is a joke in general. #1 in customer service, last in employee care.

A job is a job. It's a weekly paycheck. But the operations of this branch makes general working conditions unbearable and toxic. Managers create such an environment that purposefully instills low work morale. Rules are ALWAYS inconsistent and dependant on management's favorites. Every week I felt that there was a new rule that management wanted to try out for the week, and the logic of said rule would be redundant and serve no difference in the current ways of doing things. Managers are supposed to lead by example and be approachable.. yet here they are the exact opposite. It's hard to listen to a "higher" authority tell me that I'm doing something wrong when they themselves are in the middle of a FaceTime call with their family and friends (note any cell phone usage on the clock results in termination; management obviously has leniency on this BUT FaceTime?!). Where's the consistency in that? In addition they are ALL unapproachable. Anytime you HAVE to interact with one of them they will just mock you or just talk about you behind your back afterwards. 

The only thing positive about this place is your coworkers. They feel and understand your daily pain and are there for you to vent. The other perk is the pay, but even then that could be a future con. Your starting pay is your forever hourly pay until the store as a WHOLE gets a raise. So - if you have worked as a cashier for three years you will make the same hourly pay as the new hire who started yesterday. 

There is a tremendously high turnover rate yet management and corporate is still failing to take a step back and reflect that they are the issue. 

After my employment with Buc-ees I will never stop or shop at one again. After seeing its operations and lack of care for how they treat their employees and even customers it's a place that deserves no recognition or praise. Good luck to those who proceed with the application process and get it! I promise you it won't be a long tenure with the company.
