Absolute chaos is an accurate term to use when describing BYD’s internal structure and day-to-day.  The most appropriate starting point to characterize this chaos is the jarring cultural divide between Chinese and American work culture.  Work culture is vastly different in China than it is in the US; Chinese managers are focused primarily on producing concrete results in the form of financial assets, while US companies apply some focus on investing on human assets. 

BYD Coach & Bus does not invest in human assets whatsoever – especially not the engineers, who should be the backbone of any product oriented company.  The engineering office is primarily composed of Chinese nationals with a few outliers, while the majority of business-side and factory floor workers are American.  The language barrier greatly slows down communication, which ultimately throws all scheduling out the window. Documentation is often developed randomly and on the fly to catalogue/fix the numerous quality issues and reworks that occur in the factory.  

Circling back to investment – there is no reason any sane engineer would want to stay at this company.  80% of your work could literally be done by a middle schooler who knows how to spell the word “bus.” Ironically, you won’t receive training for any of your work that DOES require training.  You will not receive any educational assistance should you choose to pursue higher education – in fact, many of the Chinese engineers in the office have master’s degrees but are still tragically underpaid.  You will receive 5 vacation days for your first year of work and will not have your 401k matched for your first year.  You will not receive dental or vision.   Any half decent engineering company will provide all the benefits I’ve listed and more.  It seems BYD’s choice method of procuring manpower is to burn out their engineers until they’ve had enough, then cycle them out and find new resources to burn.

BEWARE of this place!!!!!!! They treat you like a slave. People on the line sometimes will work up to 16hrs a shift. Management is very poor. They have so many osha violations to the point where im still surprised its still operational. They terminate you for the littlest things. The union sucks. They ignore your problems. Very hostile work environment. Workers threaten each other all the time with violence. Safety is horrible most of the first aide kits barely have anything in them. HR is a joke. You can literally threaten people or call in as many times as you want and you'll only get a warning in return. There are a few good employees. The paint department is a mess. They always paint outside the paint booths and paint without proper equipment. thats why 1 employee only has 2 years to live thanks to this place. They dont give janitors proper equipment to deal with hazardous materials. They try there best to hide osha violations. Favoritism is a big deal here. If they dont like you they'll try there hardest to fire you. AVOID this place trust me.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I get a lot of responsibilities and learned a lot of manufacturing processes related to metals manufacturing. The office is located near lots of restaurants and coworkers are nice and knowledgable.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management is indecisive and hierarchical. You often have to work long hours and take meetings at night while being enforced to go to office almost every day. No hands-on opportunity and when they send you to travel, be prepared to leave for 2 months at a time.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I really like the coworkers I work with. They are professional and personable

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
We visit clients, do design suggestions and work closely with our vendors. 20% travel to do FAs in the factory.

As a design engineer I spend about 1/3 of the time designing new products, 1/3 of the time solving production issues and provide design change notice, and the last 3rd of the time doing prototype build. I've learned a lot about bus design and manufacturing. Management is poor. Fellow engineers are some of the most dedicated it've seen. They not only have to worry about design but have to manage project, resources, and quality as well. Very long hours. Hardest part of the job is to be on top of all the major tasks and random tasks. They are almost always over whelming. The most enjoyable part is to see your design take shape and building your own design into a actual product.

The company offers a moderate starting salary, which makes it an acceptable option for entry-level positions or those looking for a stable income. However, the long-term career growth potential within the company appears to be limited. There are fewer opportunities for promotion, skill development, or salary increments compared to more dynamic or rapidly growing firms. While the work environment may be stable, employees looking for continuous professional growth, leadership opportunities, or higher earning potential might find it challenging to advance. For those prioritizing job security and work-life balance, it could still be a reasonable choice. However, if career progression and financial growth are key concerns, it may be beneficial to consider companies with more structured development plans and upward mobility.

Typical day at work:  Building electric buses.  Work instructions weren't very clear, but then it was a fairly new company (at least here in the US) and was still trying to find its feet.  Management was actively working to improve their processes.  My fellow employees for the most part seemed to be very happy with the working environment.  Most enjoyable part of the job was being there early on and (hopefully) contributing to the development of a growing business.  Hardest part was having to leave when a family member became ill and I had to leave to take care of them.  Even then, they held my job open for several months, even though I had only worked there two.

No motivation to perform because nobody in management cares. Every single decision is based upon what the supervisor will feel about it- regardless of how significant or trivial the decision. HR sent a company wide email saying they understand and appreciate the importance of work-life balance for employees but then went on to say employee vacation must not interfere with company business priorities and may be denied or changed should not be deemed so.

The best part working here is that I get to help every supporvisor and manerger get the job done...I'm open to helping out to get the ball rolling..production  first..

I get my job done and also get calls from supporvisor  to go to other jobs ....and when I finish  a job ..I go look for another job to get in to

Not a very culture fluid and racially bias. not much room for moving up in position and work is very unorganized. A typical day at work consists of hoping the parts got ordered on time and no vendor defects. didn't really learn much there just went with the flow of the work. Management was ok and somewhat reliable. Workplace culture has a language barrier. Mostly Spanish is spoken and need to have thick skin it what most new employees are told. The hardest part of the job it keeping busy due to lack of material and parts. Working by your self and lunch was most enjoyable.
