Computer Aid Technology deserves an award for opening the door to enabling people of all walks of life with an interest in Computer Science and IT to experience what working in an IT environment is like and have all the assistance they need. They also work very hard to ensure that the work experience is also a learning experience, so that the technologies learned enable the employees to have a large pallet of skills and opportunities beyond the scopes experienced in the projects.

The most enjoyable part of the job, is that I am able to learn so many new technologies and skills and in many cases, directly apply them to applications that I never may have been able to work on before. The way the skills are taught make it very easy to pick them up and apply them at a very steady pace. 

I also love interacting with the new teams at the client site, as it gives me the opportunity to learn about what the work culture is like in a major facility. This enables us to develop connections with many people on top of our skills, so that we may build ourselves not just technologically, but socially as well.

Unfortunately, being a contracting company, many of the guidelines established can become restrictive when it comes to engaging with the clients. The nature of the work environment makes our physical appearance and the way we speak reported as more important than being with the customer to interact with our team and the client. In a few cases, we were actively pulled away from the client despite being requested to remain and unless we had a chaperone, we were not able to be at the client site. That severely hurts our ability to serve the customer.

We do not receive any benefits, vacation hours, or overtime even though we are semi-required to work a strict hourly schedule (without compensation if we are forced to work extra due to external issues such as transportation or weather conditions). This means we are required to work without a break. This has an impact on our mental fatigue that can't be addressed due to the nature of the company.

Computer Aid, Inc (CAI) is a good place to get your feet wet straight out of college. They have a structured new-hire process that takes several weeks and gives you a good feel for what you'll end up doing for their clients. While some make it through the new-hire process, they quickly learn that the company has a very flat hierarchy, so don't expect career advancement in a short time period. CAI does have many, many clients, so there is always work available if your contract falls through for whatever reason and once you're hired into the company, they're good with putting you on the "bench" until they can find somewhere to make you billable again. There is a fairly high hire rate lately as well. The company is good at keeping their developers on newer hardware as well. Usually you're laptop (yes, you can take it home and work remotely) is at most 4-5 years old before the company refreshes your rig. One thing that I do find extremely annoying and don't really fully understand why CAI does it beyond the possibility of being greedy and giving the money to upper management or company budgets, is their "profit sharing" structure for their 401k. Every year we hear how great the company did at our annual christmas party, but very rarely do you ever see any portion of that profit actually shared with you (the developer) in your 401k. If you're looking to have someone/your employer help you retire at any specific time, CAI isn't for you. Other than the retirement situation and a "competitive" pay rate (meaning they pay you slightly less than industry average for the area), the company is a pretty nice place to work.

Do not work here if you like job security or being appreciated. There is a constant rotation of new employees as this job gives you burn out extremely fast. Lay offs were happening left and right during the height of COVID, and even saw a few post COVID. Our clients are constantly understaffed, so you will be doing the work of multiple people at once, and then your manager will get upset at your for not getting 100% call reviews when you are the one taking the majority of the phone calls and emails. You will be switched between accounts and retrained constantly, while getting embarrassingly small 50 cent raises every year. Only the select few are promoted and praised while you will be stuck in the same position with the same responsibilities for years and years. You will NOT advance or excel here unless you brown nose managers and higher ups. There was a person who was a part of my team who would constantly "refresh" in the queue by changing statuses a lot so they never had to take calls, and I was always delegated to them instead, yet they were the ones who got praised in the company wide appraisal emails and they were eventually promoted off of the service desk. Telling my manager about this led to nothing happening. They definitely play favorites here. Honestly, the only plus of this job is that you get to work from home. The pay is insulting (you get paid less than someone at McDonald's or Target, I am not joking), the work is repetitive and can be stressful, and the managers are horrid to work for. I would honestly avoid this company.

If you like getting underpaid little to nothing to do the job of multiple people, then you are in the right spot. There were multiple meetings talking about the company looking for better work conditions and "changes" being made to help with the burnt-out employees there. The managers will even sit employees down and ask what changes you would like to see to make the company better, in reality they do not care about how the employees feel and or their input and will just gas light you. I truly believe HR was just forcing them to ask employees what they can do to keep people working there due to them not being able to retain them. Job security in this role is horrible and the contractor can decide to lay you off whenever they feel necessary. Please if you are going to post a position claiming the company will train the employee on CompTIA certifications and confirm it during the interview do not tell them it is not a thing anymore or that they posted the wrong job listing once they start working for the company. You also will be ensuring that the tolls are operational 24/7 to bring in BILLIONS of revenue for the state of Florida but the company forces you to pay OUT OF POCKET from your paychecks for the tolls you have to take to get to and from this work location.
In all the job was repetitive and you can pick up on it easy, but definitely is not a long-term position. "Get in and get out" was a term used often at this employer.

I had been with this company for ten years. I started as an intern. I have seen this company thrive and I have seen this company fall in the hands of new upper management. In the past year, I have seen a man fired days before brain surgery. I have seen management walk around to random cubicles and tell people to pack up their desks and leave in front of the entire office--without being pulled into a private room and given the courtesy of a one-on-one conversation. I have seen attempts to rebuild morale in the form of bagel Fridays. (However, I suspect this may be a tactic to distract from the aforementioned Random Fire Fridays where management randomly walks around and fires people for no reason.) This is a company stuck in the 1980s striving for footing in the current century. Granted, if you're fresh out of college, like eating bagels on Fridays, and only see yourself at a job for a few months, this might be the job for you. Heck, there's free coffee! Of course, I wouldn't advise getting too comfortable... or unpacking your belongings... you're better off leaving them boxed up for that inevitable Friday . I should mention, I was NOT a victim of Random Fire Friday. After ten years, I was disgusted by the turn the company had taken and told them exactly how I felt about bagels and everything else....

Starting as an intern at Computer Aid was a great. The training course was great, and provided a good insight to the skills for the job. I worked closely with a Senior Developer and was directly working with internal project, as well as clients after showing competency. This was a great learning experience.

The problem is once one gets placed on a project.  Projects differ wildly, as does the work, conditions and environment. 

After being moved to a new project, the job did very little development, and was all about paper work and procedure. Conditions went down hill. Environment went down hill.  

Many co-workers are subcontractors. Most subcontractors are paid more and receive better benefits than actual CAI employees. Co-workers were friendly and easy to work with despite not being direct CAI employees. Project Leads and Senior Developers were very good. 

Management varied depending on location, but were generally good.  

Overall it was a good starting experience, but has little room to advance. 


Project specific: 
This current project has a very high turn over rate, and management will fire employees for little to no reason. It makes security feel very low.

On a typical day, I am taking inbound calls from customers regarding the GRE (Graduate Record Examination). Some students need to have their passwords reset, some need general information, some don't agree with the policy and want us to change it or just want to vent. Along with knowing product knowledge and getting evaluated daily, I am also apart of the support staff. I have trained training classes, once the classes were over I have conducted mock calls, as well as side by side to ensure our vendor the new hires were ready to perform to the best of their ability. The hardest part of the job for me is when, a student has a death in there family and they are registered for the test and are outside of the four day reschedule window. Unless it is their mother, father, sister, brother or parent in laws we cannot provide them with the exceptions policy and the customer gets stuck paying $195 all over again just to take the exam. I really love and enjoy helping people and making people happy, also learning more and assisting with the growth of the company.

..and they still haven't got it right.  After over 10 years of dedicated work and more than significant contributions to revenue, CAI laid me off because our work was slow (because of bad business decisions by 'leadership') and because I was the most costly resource due to my contributions and team leadership abilities.  Unfortunately, the company has treated its loyal employees poorly and they have either left voluntarily or were laid off.

To say that flexibility is the culture is an understatement.  

Prior to the reorganization, the work was challenging, rewarding, and appreciated.  The hardest part of the job was, then, the work demands (often required nights/weekends).  The hardest part of the job for the last two years has been the exposure to 'decision makers.'

The most enjoyable part of being a Proposal Manager is seeing the fruits of your labor - and seeing a project through from start to finish.

There is little to no growth opportunities at Computer Aid. Management plays favorites and they are given opportunities. One manager in particular is very immature and excludes other employees in the office. It's like being in highschool. Most of the other managers played along with him maybe because they were afraid of making him mad or not being included. 

The team's responsibilities were to support aging Oracle software. If the clients were to move to the Oracle cloud, most of the team would not have jobs and Computer Aid wasn't doing anything to prepare the teams for that eventual move.

I enjoyed my coworkers that were on the support team. I felt like we were all in the same boat. Before the pandemic there were CAI Cares events that I enjoyed going to.
