CARES of Washington

A typical day involves reaching out to clients, creating success portraits, and fostering win-win opportunities. Documenting in the system is routine, but the joy comes from helping people realize their potential and enjoy life. Learning the art of effective communication, management is supportive, the culture is collaborative. The hardest part is facing challenges with clients, but the most enjoyable part is witnessing their growth and happiness.

I worked at Cares for 22 months, I only left because I was denied a total of 12 days off in the month of December.  Long story short, I lost my spouse in September, came back to work 2 weeks later (as I was being asked constantly by the manager when I would be back). Started a class on Fridays, saw my clients and when a new person was hired asked for the time off.  The manager said it would be no problem, then in November she and the CEO denied my time and said I could take it in January.  I gave six weeks notice to get the new person on board and my co workers were willing to pick up any time that needed to be filled.

The CEO and the manager are more concerned about maxing hours and pleasing the county, they do not care about employees and their mental/emotional health.  

There was a huge turn over in the North team and a struggle to find new hires.  The south team is small and the manager has made it known how much she does not like a certain employee.

I was sad to leave but needed to take care of myself and personal affairs.

Cares is a toxic place to work.

A typical day working at Cares is, you meet with clients, you assist them and help them overcome any barriers they might have with finding gainful employment.
I have learned a lot from working for Cares. Everything from what we need to do to meet contract goals, to how we can help make our clients feel seen and heard no matter their socioeconomic status is.
Management is extremely accommodating and willing to listen to our feedback. 
The most enjoyable part of the job for me is getting to see your clients go from rock bottom and being homeless to making a living wage, getting an apartment and being able to create a savings account.
It is a very rewarding job! 


A typical day of work is extremely self guided and depends on the case load of client's that are being supported. You can make your own schedule and it's very independent. You of course have hours, deadlines, and other regular workplace goals that need to be accomplished, however it's up to you when you are wanting to and able to complete it. The managers are so humble and supportive, and the workplace culture is very cordial and friendly. The hardest part of the job might be making sure all of your clients are seen and serviced within the hours and resources you're given from the state. It is also (for some people) the type of job you take home with you given that you're working to support people and their lives. The best part of the job is how fulfilling it is and the difference you're helping to make in people's lives. I also enjoy how independent the work is.

I cannot say too much bad about Cares of Washington as their mission is exceptional and really hits the core of what humanity should be however, the company as a whole is in need of a face lift.  The salaries are not comparable to the work that you do, especially when you are working well over the required 40 hours per week.  There is no room for advancement with this company.  The benefits are very good with a good chunk of paid time off and vacation pay.  The best part of the job overall is knowing you are doing a good deed each and every day!

I’ve been working with this organization for around 4 years now and have really gotten into a great groove. At first it was hard to learn since there really isn’t structured training in place for my exact position and because so much of this job is situational but after some time I got the hang of it and have found it to be incredibly fulfilling. There’s a lot of documenting but if you’re naturally organized then it’s easy peasy and if you’re not naturally organized they’ll be willing to work with you, in my personal experience. The CEO is a very kind soul and super approachable. 

The mission at Cares of Washington is admirable; however if you are looking to advance in your career, this is not the place to do it.  You do the work for the love of what you are doing and because you know it is a rewarding job; not for the pay or for career advancement.  Overall it is a good place to work, but as with all non-profits, the benefits change frequently and there are always kinks that need to be worked out.

Working at Cares is rewarding and fulfilling. It is gratifying to see the positive impact of the work each staff person does. Cares strives to support people in reaching their goals and having an inclusive workplace. The compensation is reasonable given the non profit status, salaries are lower than for profit companies, but the medical and educational benefits are better than the for profit companies.

Cares of Washington is a small non-profit organization that supports vulnerable populations achieving their goals and potential. It works to be an inclusive organization that values its employees and participants. It offers competitive compensation, benefits and opportunities to make a difference in a person's life every day. It is a challenging and rewarding job where I see the positive impact of our work when each person makes progress.

I can’t express enough what a great company this is. Coming up on three years, and the thought of leaving hasn’t crossed my mind. This is a family, a team of individuals who learn and grow with each other. To be able to watch the success’s happen, to watch the smiling faces of those who accomplish what they’ve wanted in their lives could not be more rewarding. We change lives, and to be apart of that could help change yours as well.
