Great Place to Work- is an internal slogan for us, and it truely is a great place to work. It is a friendly work environment, many smiling faces every where you go within the company. There's a lot of encouragement, support from management, and even communication with our VPN's and CEO. There's constant emails updating/informing employees of events that involve the company. Also appreciation dinners, acknowledgments of going above and beyond for customers. Typical day- come in say good morning to everyone in my department sign in to computer, respond to emails, voicemails, and any paperwork left on my desk. We answer phone calls from customers, employees, attorneys, and insurance companies. Attend meetings, trainings, and refresher courses (if on the agenda that day). Hardest part of the job is having to inform a customer we don't cover their request, especially when the customer metions their financial status. Management and co-workers are great, we are like family, at times we have ups and downs mostly when there's a catastrophy or unforseen event. But overall, we know eachother, and we add on different qualities that complete our unit. The most enjoyable part of my job is when I have helped out a customer, even if I was unable to provide what they wanted. Instead provided the service they deserved, and that made them satisfied, that's my favorite part of my job.

CPS Energy was an interesting place to work, especially as an internal auditor.  The organization encompassed many different fields of business, all of which were crucial to the overall performance of the business.  Power plant maintenance and operation differed greatly from electric distribution throughout the service area.  As well, customer service, procurement activities, and energy trading were are crucial, but significantly different.  Due to this, the audits I performed were rarely repetitive and addressed a wide spectrum of business objectives and related risks.  
As a whole the company was a good place to work.  The pay wasn't the greatest, but it did allow for reasonable work/life balance.  The people cared about what they did and were committed to providing customers power at a reasonable rate.  However, there seemed to be a shift in senior management.  There were a great many people who had worked at CPS Energy for decades, moving up throughout the company.  But in the last few years, more and more of the senior management positions were filled by individuals from outside the company.  Employees with 20+ years experienced stopped looking to advance, and began looking forward to retirement.  Growth opportunities were not prevalent, so younger workers looked at their jobs just as stepping stones to their next position.

CPS Energy call center is a good place to gain experience but not to work more than two years. It is very hard to transfer to another department, almost impossible. Supervisors and managers are not chosen by experience or qualifications. They are chosen according to the relationship they have with leadership (friendships). Customers can be very difficult and if you are the kind of person that don't feel sorry for those who make the wrong decisions in life, this job is not for you. During extended outages this job is very challenging. The information coming from leadership is poor and many times you have to make things up to tell the customers. I have to say that in my short experience as a customer service representative (about 6 years) these are the worst customers I have ever had. The technology used is from the 90's, there is no Holidays party and the "Bonus" is almost impossible to get full. In this job you have to be on call for two weeks every eight weeks, that is 24x7. and you can be called in to work at any time (this usually happens during storms) In all CPS Energy jobs, people stay at their jobs for a very long time. However in the call center they stay an average of two years. Good luck!

From what I visualized no one is happy here. It isn't apparent until you've committed time and energy. The corporate environment is toxic, sad and hopeless. You realize that you're just another piece in a monopoly. Upper management torments lower management for fun and lower management passes on the abuse because that is all they know. You will be targeted eventually. Watching over your shoulder and fearing every meeting isn't something anyone wants to dread each morning. This is not a collaborative environment. There is no coaching. Management has no management skills and the requests seem impossible without direction. There is a barrage in place. There is a new process of disruption and it is apparent that something is very wrong. If you speak to HR or a supervisor you will be eliminated. This is not a place to share your opinions or express that you have questions. Do as they as they say and keep your head down. It's a common practice. If you're still interested I implore you. The 3 years I was there, I had 4 different Directors, and several different managers.  I still have friends there and the company can't help but do well because it has a monopoly on electricity.  There are some departments where personnel are very happy, but Supply Chain/Procurement is not one of those departments.  The hardest part of the job was the lack of processes, management kept changing and the workplace culture is indifferent towards its customers.  I developed a high blood pressure condition while I was there, so I switch jobs, because that place was going to kill me!  I did enjoy my co-workers, god bless the ones that are still there. The company I'm with has utilized my ideas, has promoted me and I have increased my salary by 50%.  CPS Energy was a great learning experience from the prospective that there are worst places to work.  Lastly, Director's on up acted like royalty, as if you had to request permission to speak to them, regardless of their open door policy they constantly reminded us they had.      

CPS Energy is a great place to retire from as far as benefits are concerned as long as you can get past all the constant changing & reinventing the wheel every 18 mos or so. The majority of my career i've worked in 2 areas & i've had 9 different managers in the past 14 years. And management is constantly talking about head count and making it smaller, everytime they tell us there's a number we're trying to meet they then come up with another number a year later. I see peolple getting burned out & fusterated but say there's no point in talking to managment because it's not going to change because that manager will be moved in a few months anyway. A lot of people say they would leave but because of the benefits they stay. At one point i felt like we were a family oriented company & now we're just a well oil machine & everything else gets put on the back burner.

As an engineer working in the plants, you’ll be expected to help maintain operating conditions of the plant in any capacity. It’s a broad expectation, but basically you can expect to help predict/troubleshoot issues and lead projects to help fix them. 
There’s a lot of skills ands things to learn outside of engineering to take away from this job, like project management, construction methods, system controls, etc. 
If you have a hard time with stress management and dealing with uncertainty though, working as an engineer in the plants may not be the role for you, but CPS has other spots for engineers.
Overall, I like working here and would recommend to anyone looking for a role that will challenge them. The people I’ve met here have been fantastic and I believe management is looking out for my best interest.
My only complaint is that engineers are salary-based, so there is no overtime pay. If they change that, I’d probably stay here for the rest of my career.

For some jobs you have to earn them by time (line of progressions), this allows you to learn many things before intering the job. Other jobs you can apply out, so people with less time can become a forman (boss) of a crew. This makes no sense how can they run a crew when they have no experience of what the other team members actually do and how to do it themselves. With less experience CPS has been having more accidents, just because they want to promote someone they know.  Sometimes they promote people based on race 1 white, 1 Mexican, and 1 black so no one can use a race card.  Hello, how obvious is that? If they just promoted people based off their proforma cell instead of who they know, CPS work be doing so much better.
Then they are so short handed they are working the crew where they r getting overtime in this summer heat. Again, can i say more accidents.

A typical day at work means you come to your office or job site prepared to start immediately after a few pleasantries with your coworkers.  Everyone has a job to do, and successful completion of assigned tasks meant the next phase could begin by another.

Management values progressive employee improvement in their job skills, leadership potential, and keeping an eye out for any potential process improvement that could be implemented.  Unfortunately, many directives for employee improvement were not implemented because of budget cuts contradictory to the other goal.

The workplace culture mandated by C-Level management was good, but there were notable contradictions with instructions filtered down to lower level & field employees.

A brief safety meeting and stretch with management to start the day, then off to the shop to brief the day’s work and important jobs. I then start my everyday daily tasks. I have learned so much due to the training classes I’ve been through. I have learned a lot about how a power plant operates and functions. There are many helpful and knowledgeable. Management has also been very helpful to my success. I love working for CPS Energy. Compensation is great as well as benefits. I have been looking forward to getting into a corporate position for a while now as I’ve been pursuing my undergraduate degree, I am also pursuing my MBA starting in January. I love that CPS Energy gives me the tools and information to be successful. I love working with a team and getting to know and make new friends and colleagues.
