Working for the state used to hold some significance and prestige in my eyes before joining but, unfortunately, it is just full of people that BARELY do their job and never receive punishment for it. This is why everything takes so long to get done when it comes to the state government. 

The only good thing about my position was the good work that was being done by the very few people who actually cared about the programs mission instead of just paper pushing and being in endless meeting to "look busy". Overall, I would not recommend working for CDPH, because they are stuck in the 90s or something, they have not come to grips that worker culture has changed and that they should provide amenities for their workers that come into the office a few days a week. They haven't updated their workplace culture and overall no one has an incentive to work hard, because no one can get fired apparently. It's a recipe for an inefficient disaster of an organization. Also the union representing CDPH employees is just embarrassing -- they're unable to get workers the basics and always cave to the states demands. 


What is the best part of working at the company?
Interacting and providing tech support to them public. Knowing that you play a significant role in the credentialing and licensing of facilities and technicians treating you and your families

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lowest paid employees vs the amount of work exoected. Many of the supervisors and managers overseeing the units do not have a full understanding of workflow process. They've never done the work and rely on statistical data vs hands on experience

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Depends on how long you have worked in the unit. Sink or swim if you do not have strong work ethics, resources and support of an experienced supervising hands on manager on site 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Non-stop customer support, wirkibg on a unit that is often micromanaged. Hybrid work svhefile offers some advantage to work part of the week in person, part remote

The expression, "people don't leave jobs, they leave managers" comes to mind.  The legal office hasn't enjoyed steady management. 
Because the Chief Counsel is appointed during each administration, it can be hard to keep the good managers or get rid of the poor ones.   When there is a leadership void, the office can be at its worst.  When there were great managers, staff feel supported and appreciated, especially when staff go the extra mile.  By the same token, when the managers are less than competent, work life becomes stressful because the managers (who may be still learning the roll of the staff) can get in the way of staff reaching their goals. When staff wants to constructively address this problem, the less competent managers take offense and can even target the messenger.  

CDPH doesn't offer a way to manage these fluctuation.

I never thought I would come to love this job as much as I have. The work this organization is doing is phenomenal, and I am so blessed to be apart of it. My coworkers have the most positive attitudes. Unfortunately, management might be the deal breaker for me… I think I not only speak for myself but other employees as well when I say management is terrible here. They constantly make us feel like we’re bad workers. Getting us in trouble for accusations or things we were never aware of. Constantly threatening our jobs and are super negative. I highly recommend not working here. There is no chance of promotions or personal growth. The work is super easy but they make it very difficult. I have only been here for less than 3 months and they already fired 7 good employees with no legitimate reason. You can’t have open and honest communication with management because they just take it as talking back and having attitude. 

Working for CDPH was an honor and I was very proud to work for the state of California.  I learned that if not monitored correctly, people will get sick and their goal was to keep their communities healthy.  Everyone was invited to participate in meetings, even if you were not an engineer and they listened to your opinions as well as acting on them. The culture was very humble and welcoming.  They were willing to teach me about environmental management and how it effects our way of living. The hardest part of the job was dealing with the government on their purchasing processes, but I was generally able to get what we needed to work effectively. The most enjoyable part of the job were my associates and being able to say that I made a difference however small to the well being of our state.

I've worked extremely hard and proven myself, often working 60 hours a week. The pay is horrible and there is no room for advancement. There is not one more thing I could do to prove I should be promoted or given a raise. Despite this, leadership and management always deny my requests saying they cannot move forward with my career due to lack of budget. Despite this, they hire new people all the time at a rate higher than what current employees are getting. 

However, I love this job. I feel like I make a difference in the world everyday. I do not want to leave. But last month I needed new socks and I had to wait until my next paycheck to be able to purchase them. That is not fair for how hard I have worked everyday in this position. 

Working for the State means "you're set for life." But how can an employee enjoy it's job with a great amount of workload being tasked? How can an employee be confident in spending money on a daily basis with little salary? Do we have to focus on the future or to what is present? The workload usually outweighs the salary. Internal issue is also rampant and its intoxicating to the employees. Also the littlest penny, State will get after you. Sometimes I just don't even bother claiming my overtime because they make it so hard. Is it worth it? Maybe if you just s*ck it up for the future. But as for the present, it does not pay the bills.

I don’t recall having one at all ever? People are very nice and friendly to each others and helpful to work with! Job is good for your resume to begin with!

Great job environment and lots of fun people to work with!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very eventful and happy days! Jobs are evenly distributed across all employees amongst us and PM’s are always welcoming to performs!

During my Internship at Vaccine for Children Program learned  various process of vaccine ordering, storing, temperature log requirement and distribution of vaccine for children. I has been a very fun loving  and rewarding work experience. My supervisor gave me various projects such as analysis of all  vaccine that are  reported out of range temperature in each month, what are the cause  of temperature goes out of range and made  a list of thermometer that are follow the FDA guidelines. The most enjoyable part of job is to attend the Epidemiological meeting every Wednesday and learn the new  development in various diseases around the world.

CDPH is a good place to work for planning to retire early and to gain higher level of experience in skilled nursing facilities, hospitals.  The newly appointed supervisors are not qualified in terms of handling people, creating conflict between staff, mismanagement, micromanaging, no leadership training skills. They based their instructions through their working experiences and not through the mandated policy and procedures. The leadership people lacks ability and capacity to keep demoralized staff so the retention is too high. They don’t listen, not approachable, not professional in communication and not consistent in decision-making.
