This company has high turnover--they get a new CEO on average every two years and just as you think you are getting to know them, they leave. Then a new one comes in and starts all over again. Middle management and therapists come and go like a revolving door. Because of this, most therapy staff are new grads. They don't give pay raises when moving up the clinical ladder and if you work PRN you will never get a raise no matter how well you perform on your annual review. (It actually states in your work agreement that you will NEVER get a raise.)

Required weekend hours offer little to no flexibility -- full time staff do 8 hrs a month and PRN staff do 16 hours of weekends. They are always short staffed on weekends so the schedule is usually very busy, so much so that it's difficult to get out on time.

Two logistical items that make work efficiency untenable include: the computers are painfully slow and the elevators are always broken. These things seem small but the time wasted over the course of the day because of this make the work flow much harder, especially when your patients are scheduled back-to back. Then at the end of the day it takes an extra 10-15 minutes to wait for your car because the parking lot is so small that the valet has to dig your car out from the stacked parking lot.

Working at the California Rehabilitation Institute has been an inspiring experience, particularly due to the outstanding leadership demonstrated by the executive team and supervisors. Their dedication to supporting the staff is truly commendable.

What stands out most is their commitment to being present. It’s not just about regular hours—they’ve gone above and beyond by visiting during night shifts. This kind of visibility and hands-on engagement speaks volumes about their leadership style. They take the time to listen, encourage, and provide real-time support to the team, no matter the hour.

The organization’s vision and the fresh energy brought by new leadership have created a positive and collaborative atmosphere. It’s clear there is a genuine commitment to the well-being of both staff and patients, fostering a sense of trust and motivation throughout the team.

Their efforts to build a supportive and encouraging environment do not go unnoticed. It’s reassuring to work under leaders who prioritize the needs of their team and lead by example. The California Rehabilitation Institute is fortunate to have such exceptional leadership guiding it forward.

Cal Rehab suffers from an over reaching parent corporation (Select Medical) that does not value its workforce and does not understand the local workforce market. 

It gives people 3% merit increases each year and ends up underpayment valued employees often having to make blanket market adjustments thereby voiding all incentive to perform well.

During the pandemic it did not allow nurses to take time off but also did not increase its PTO cap, essentially robbing people of PTO.

It also tried to start a DEI group and increases diversity efforts but didn't commit any substantial resources to the group essentially just sending out monthly emails while taking no real action.

Also nurses went months without any meal or rest breaks. 

The parking situation is a fire hazard. The fire marshall actually did come down and say there were too many cars in the structure 

The benefit plans are terrible. If you want HMO coverage you will pay alto. The company only covers 65-80% of the monthly  premium cost.

The 401k match is also not very good essential only matching 1.5% of your annual salary 




Therapists have patients scheduled one after another with no breaks in between, which means you have to work over time in order to complete all your work. But then you get disciplined if you clock out late.

The incentives for climbing the clinical ladder do not include pay raises. (They just give a one time bonus.) This means you add on more responsibilities without any long term merit pay associated with it. PRN therapists have been at the same pay rate since the hospital opened and have signed agreements acknowledging they will NEVER receive a pay raise!!

Management changes every 2-3 years. Everyone from CEO, Director of Rehab, to CNO, and down to middle managers change every couple years so no one is around long enough to have any real institutional knowledge or loyalty to the place. The most recent CEO is highly focused about performance metrics than he is about patient care or about the work environment.

Just don't. Read the prior reviews and save your yourself from this toxic, stressful, disorganized place. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The management is very disconnected from the needs of the patients and the staff. The only concern is profit and they will stretch the staff thin in order to maximize it.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Their is a lack of concern with the workload and resting periods for therapists and patients. Management makes decisions, stay in meetings and are not immediately available in emergencies.

Being over tasked. The pay does not match the demands

Great customer service,  great physician, friendly environment, nurses work hard to meet patient s goals, excellent therapist

When covid hits we’re lack of staff but still managed to get the job done

Great. We have people all over the country who  to get treated at Cal Rehab. We are multi culture and we treat everyone accordingly

In the morning I find it a bit busy.  We made sure that everyone who’s schedule for that morning are up and going. Overall a bit busy but satisfying

Colleagues are nice, very helpful

The number of patients that go up for weekly conferences at one time followed by the amount of work necessary to complete the entire conference 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
For the most part it’s very nice. There are times when the nursing staff requires repeated reminders to do things which impacts my ability to complete my assignments 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very rushed, fast paced. It’s often very difficult to take a lunch break. If lunch is taken, you have to rush through it if you want to get off on time

Staff (mostly nurses) stay because of their sign in bonus. Staff morale has been declining because of bad management. Pay may seem competitive but you pay for a horrible out of state insurance that merely covers anything. HR is useless. More concerned about sending out new staff pictures or posters rather than actually doing their jobs. Not accountable if they make a mistake. Not really your typical Acute Rehab place but more of a glorified SNF.. They are always short staffed because nobody wants to pick up OT in such a horrible place even if they give out bonuses or raffle.

It had started well and looked like a promising company to grow career-wise. A lot of good people work there and do really good work with the patients. Unfortunately, in some departments, micromanaging is the standard to the mental exhaustion of a team of qualified and high-performing professionals that bring results regardless. In addition, it seems like in order to grow and get promoted, it is not about uplifting and training your team but when you point fingers and walk over people. Sad really.

The ability to be apart of a team that  sets a standard to exceed expectations in safety and patient care.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I would not term it as stress, challenging from time to time when there is a staff shortage

Great people, cohesive mindsets

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Coming to be with my team and ensuring that no staff member feels overwhelmed.  Reassuring one another and supporting each I other on completing the task before us
