Cape Cod Healthcare is a great place to practice what has been learned through a good medical technology program. The staff is knowledgeable and the lead techs are great at teaching and helping junior staff members. The compensation is near top notch for Massachusetts and the benefits are great as well, however, this is due to a very strong contract with the union. 
     There are many staff members that simply do not care about helping someone outside of their assigned bench for that particular time period even though there is no lack of competency or experience. The laboratory has minimal direction due to the current lack of a laboratory manager as well as have a large number of laboratory managers being turned over in the recent past. Also, due to the union, there is a larger than normal gap between management and staff; this has created a good deal of tension when decisions need to be made that will ultimately help to increase the quality of patient care but may cause some changes that the staff just cannot seam to handle. Ultimately, this has come to create management that has become blind to some actions of staff which would be better enabled by dealing with the behavior and improving work efficiency and quality.
    The pathologists, who normally would do anything to support the laboratory, have a history of siding with the hospital management. This has caused problems in the acquisition of recent equipment and a major change in laboratory information system software that is continually crashing and has caused the laboratory to lose some functionality e.g. no longer being able to auto verify "normal" results.
    Problems between shifts seam to occur more often here as well. Night shift employees believe that the day shift employees are "Know It All's" and day shift employees believe that evening shift employees do not do anything after six in the evening.
     Some of the staff have been very helpful and others could walk by without a second look.
     There is a loose agreement with some of the colleges in the area with a Medical Laboratory Technology program. However, the students are not given enough time per department and there are no didactic lessons held at the hospital.
     Although there are many negative constituents that Cape Cod Healthcare has going against it, the upper management has an eye on the future of the organization and is working on changing for the better. Whether or not the changes are coming soon enough is to be determined.

As a former employee of Cape Cod Hospital I have the utmost respect for the people who work there. The supervisory staff have a hands on approach which support the emergency room team. E.R staff is exceptional at providing patients with the utmost care, and respect. Confidentiality is a priority to the team members. After working in the E.R for eight years, I had the ability to move into the clinical laboratory, there I met many professional workers who care deeply about the patients they are reporting results on. Their critical thinking guides them, and their knowledge to make requests to physicians to order further testing when needed proves their years of experience is essential in diagnosing their patients. They are always willing to jump in and help and are keenly aware of what bench needs help. I then took a position in the pathology lab, which was a combined position, this was very different work than the clinical laboratory, the expression "it takes a community to raise a child" is what comes to mind in this position, learning two different jobs at the same time was challenging, and yet, rewarding. The team in the department are very quick to assist, rely on one another opinions and direction, and support one another. The Supervisors and Director look to the support staff to make process improvements, and as a result of our input, positive improvements are made for better outcomes. Pathologists are most helpful in giving feedback of the work performed, and I liked them very much.
The hardest part of my job, are the changes the hospital is currently going through, with changes in healthcare, and reimbursement rates the hospital is actively changing the way they deliver healthcare in order to sustain itself. These changes trickle down into the jobs, and at the height of tourism on Cape cod staffing an acute care hospital seasonably is difficult, and often staffing is an issue. Workers are offered generous overtime pay.
The most enjoyable part of my day is getting feed back from patients that we have made their visit less stressful, and our team actions have positive outcomes.

A help desk that supports 5K+ employees and any CCHC patient through the EPIC MyChart patient portal tech support line.   A help desk and a call center job, combined.  

Extremely busy help desk, call volumes 4K-6K calls per month, plus an on-line portal for employees to log tickets directly for the help desk department.  
Department staffing levels, average 10-12 full time staff, 1-2 per diem employees.  
Coverage provided, 24/7/365.   
Job salary range $19.-$30. hourly, though most everyone starts at lower end of that range, even those with tech experience in other areas.  College educated with AS, BS, IT degree with no experience start at $19. hourly.  
Annual increases are not performance based, everyone in the department gets same rate increase every year, usually $.50 hourly.  Employees who have worked in the dept. for many years have confirmed.  
Promotions within the group are rare, same job just new job title and raise.  It's even rarer to advance to other IT groups within CCHC.  With the exception of the help desk, most CCHC tech jobs posted are for mid-senior level roles.  

The help desk department does a ton of work; I didn't feel that was recognized or appreciated by the other CCHC IT teams or the other CCHC employees in the various departments.  

Anyone living on the cape and working in the tech field knows there are limited job options in the area.

(Medical benefits are excellent, if you live on cape and utilize CCHC facilities, benefits are excellent, monthly charge for medical/dental/vision is very reasonable.  Other benefits decent, fairly standard for a large-scale employer.)

Cape cod hospital is a great place to work. It is a team / family environment by saying that I mean everyone has the same goal..... patient care. Cape cod health care puts patient care first.  Everyone works together as a team and the employees do have say in their daily work.  Employees are constantly informing management of issues that can be addressed, ways to improve the daily work.  Employees step up on a daily basis to improve patient care.  I work in the pharmacy department and I can say that it has been a life changing opportunity, I’m constantly learning on a daily basis, It is not monotonous. I compound IV’s in a sterile environment, refill Automated dispensing systems, participate in process improvements for my department, obtain med Rec’s for patients.  Everyday is different and challenging.

Other than the great work environment the benefits are not comparable to any other company. Full time employees get 3 weeks paid vacation, paid holidays off,  time and a half for holidays worked, differentials based on what shifts you work.  Your day is literally only 8 hours... you actually get a bereak and lunch paid.  You are paid overtime for anything over an 8 hour day and anything over a 40 hour week. The health insurance is outstanding along with dental and other coverage.  The salary for a pharmacy tech is the highest in the state.  This is a union hospital so you increase your pay step yearly and get cost of living.

I worked the night weekend package when my two children were younger.  I worked every weekend 7p to 7am Sat and Sun and then would pickup most every Friday a per diem shift on the 3-11 shift to support my family, as my husband was in school.  I learned so much at the Cape Cod Hospital, how to multi task and become a strong advocate for my patients.  I enjoyed working with the other nurses and medical staff and it truly was a family like community hospital with a growing edge.  The hardest part of my job was becoming attached to our very frequent patients, because we were a hemodialysis floor, and watching them slowly decline.  Also, the very young cancer patients were difficult to watch leave, often small children behind.  I worked for many years with a very bad back and ultimately had to leave due to the severity of the degenerative disk disease, which forced me to get a fusion. I miss being a nurse every day but hope to get back into the health care field somehow, perhaps as a social worker, because I do enjoy helping people very much.  I find that the most satisfying and rewarding aspect to health care is helping someone else through a hard time and watching them gain strength, both physically and emotionally.

The organization pretends to be committed to patient care quality and excellence, but this is all a show. The only commitment to these principles arises from the hope that getting a quality rating now and then will entitle the  organization to higher payments, but no genuine interest in anything remotely associated with doing a better job. They own all the doctors, to be sure none of them take a viewpoint any different from the dictatorial senior management. They will spend as much time and effort as it takes to eliminate any competitors in the community. I heard the CEO talk about "Partnerships without ownership," but it was a big lie. All he wants is to own every practice, clinic and other healthcare facility for many miles around, to maximize his profits (and hence his re-imbursement). This is supposedly a non profit institution devoted to community service, but you learn that is not the case as soon as you enter the door.

Working at the Visiting Nurse Association required a dedication to the purposes of the agency.  It was a team effort.  Many times in a typical day the telephone would interrupt the project I was working on only to create a new project with a sooner deadline that had to be worked on immediately.  Flexibility was a must in this high pressured job.  Everyone in our department worked as a team.  The most difficult thing for me was dropping what I was working on to complete something else.  Sometimes this meant putting aside an important project and not being able to pick it up again for several days.   My supervisor expected me to accomplish whatever she asked me to do which sometimes meant my staying past closing to finish what ever was necessary.  I enjoyed the people that worked at the VNA we always encouraged one another and kept the atmosphere friendly.
It was always a pleasure to receive a "thank-you" for helping me get this project completed.

You work with a great population of patients and staff that care for the most part. Also the health insurance is currently great but has already changed once during my two years at the hospital. Staff are no longer college educated, but all staff are more than competent in the field. 
   The only problem is that the only upward mobility provided is the limited financial assistance for further education. You cannot move up unless you have a further degree of education under your belt. Most likely you will not have the time or energy due to the unusual work schedule and nature of the work itself.
    However the benefits and compensation as well as the work itself is so good that you may feel stuck if you like this kind of work. If you like this kind of work though, it usually means you should have already advanced in he field by now because you are a keeper and hard to come by.

It's very sad to have a major employer on Cape Cod be such negative environment to work . Individuals are placed in management roles by who they know - not what they know. The political arena runs rapid and strong. Everyone is related to someone which is nice to a point yet there is a high level of protecting one another in any given situation. The unstable management team sets the environment for the multidisciplinary teams actually providing patient care . Many believe the unhealthy ' shenanigans " occurring at the management level are hidden from the CEO because he presents with a low tolerance of such nonsense. Unfortunately many very experienced, professional and pleasant individuals have parted ways for voluntary and involuntary  reasons which effects the morale of many teams at Cape Cod Hospital . There is an extremely low level of trust and respect for and from the management team creating a very caustic , stressful and unprofessional work environment . Unless you are related to someone , are a union employee or enjoy a negative work environment , Cape Cod Healthcare may not be the best choice of employment - for anyone .

This company is a mess.  The hospice dept. is the worst by far.  Leadership is changing, led by the CCO who is a bully and leads by fear.  There is a huge upheaval in the leadership dept. which one would think would be good but it is one puppet replacing another.  Try and speak up for what is right and kiss your job good bye.  Keep your head down and mouth shut and you may do well as long as you don't mind documenting for hours for free-even though you are an hourly employee overseen by a bargaining group. Don't expect the union to step in and help because they turn as much a blind eye as the rest of that messed up shop.  If you love home care, love your patients and want a supportive environment-RUN from this job and do not look back!  Awful, awful awful and the patients and families suffer along with the nurses.  Such a shame that what could be an amazing organization is just another pathetic environment who cares about nothing but the money.  Sad.
