Care Options For Kids

Care Options for Kids (COFK) was once a well-regarded agency as a place to work as a therapist. However, since being acquired by a private equity firm in the last two years, there have been significant changes that have impacted both the company’s culture and its services. What used to feel like a personable, locally-focused agency now feels more corporate and disconnected.

Internal changes have often lacked transparency, such as the removal of the 401k match. This decision was communicated through a late-night email, which informed us that the 401k match would be cut to reallocate funds toward healthcare benefits. However, the healthcare benefits have not improved and still fall short of industry standards.
Losing the 401k match is a significant financial hit for employees. When you combine this with limited base pay and minimal opportunities for annual raises, it becomes difficult for employees to achieve meaningful financial progress.

Upper management has been inconsistent, with frequent changes and turnover making it hard to stay connected or understand what's happening. The transition from Solace to COFK was poorly communicated, which led many of my patients’ families to believe I had joined a new company. This left me feeling uncertain about how future changes would be managed.

Communication around the company’s brand and recruitment efforts often felt rushed and disconnected. The focus seemed to be on hiring new staff, without much attention to the needs of the existing team.
Home health, especially in pediatrics, is a rewarding but challenging field that requires a specific mentality and drive. The support you receive upfront is helpful and continues throughout your time with the company. However, any attempts to secure a pay raise as a therapist seem likely to be minimal, given the cost of maintaining support systems like scheduling teams, car programs, mentors, and a costly, subpar health benefits package.

Overall Thoughts: 
If you're looking for initial support to get your feet on the ground and don't mind a corporate environment, malls and frequent meetings, COFK might be a good fit. 

However, if you're seeking competitive compensation and benefits that align with long-term goals like buying a home, paying off student loans, or starting a family, this may not be the best option. During my time here, I found that financial growth opportunities were limited, and the benefits didn’t meet expectations for the industry here in Colorado.


PHC is a home healthcare company that focuses on quality over quantity. Not only do they just not hire any nurse, they also don’t just take any client. They vet their clients and make sure that the clients, their families, and the atmosphere is good for their nurses. I have had the opportunity to meet several patients and never felt uncomfortable or unsafe in any of the homes I am sent to. Working in home health prior, this is HUGE! As a nurse, the first time you go to a clients house, you are met there with a manager and introduced to the client and their family. This is prior to scheduling any shifts with the patient. After the first meeting and making sure both the nurse and the client’s family are comfortable, nurses are scheduled for a shortened “training” shift with a current nurse of the patient. During this time you are still not committed to this patient and both the nurse and the family have an opportunity to address any concerns or decline all together. Once the nurse and the family decide on it being a great fit, your first actual shift will be with a clinical supervisor. 

I have been with this company right at a year and am constantly amazed at how they treat their staff. They focus a great deal on their nurses, and they know that happy nurses make happy clients. Clinical supervisors are always willing and eager to offer support and schedulers know all their nurses by name. Being a RN student, I present my school schedule to the scheduler every quarter and they work with me and my classes and test dates. It is not uncommon for me to get a call or text prior to a test with a “good luck, you’ve got this!” So if you’re looking for a job where you’re thrown into the field and left to fend for yourself, this isn’t the place for you, but if you’re looking for a job with support from staff, appreciation for their nurses, and a passion for their clients, you’ve come to the right place! Oh! And did I mention the coffee anytime you meet with a manager or scheduler!? 

Solace is a remarkable company that truly treats their employees like human beings. The individuals in leadership positions look out for the best interest of the company from all angles. Transitioning from the clinic setting to a home health setting was a breeze with Solace because of the level of support provided. I went from feeling nervous and intimidated to feeling empowered and confident in my capabilities as a therapist. My schedule filled up very quickly, I created a schedule that worked best for me, and if I had any questions there was always someone there for guidance. I did not think a company like this could exist. I have never worked for a company that has been so committed to receiving honest feedback, so they can make sure they are doing everything possible to maximize success for all therapists. The company continues to grow by implementing ideas that are beyond what one may typically see in a pediatric setting, home health or otherwise. 

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Solace provided full transparency by informing employees current and next steps on a daily basis and provided comfort by doing everything possible to ensure we were set up for success and ready to roll out telemedicine immediately. Because of this, I was able to maintain a very full schedule even through the mandatory lockdown. In such an unpredictable time, I was grateful for consistency in my job. There are so many leadership opportunities, which was a huge draw for me joining this company. I have since taken on many leadership and supervisory roles, which has allowed me to grow as a professional in a shorter period of time compared to previous jobs. I know this is only the beginning for Solace and am excited to be part of the growth within this company!

This review would have been 4-5 stars had it not been for the way I was treated by my clinical managers all 3 levels deep. 

My clinical management team unilaterally changed the terms of my employment contract so they could force me to cover a sudden urgent need for a PT outside my area. When I refused to comply with the changes they proceeded to use intimidation and deceit to try to manipulate me into meeting their demands. I could not trust any verbal communication with them.

I compromised by accepting the part time “option” they gave me to keep my employment at Solace but they refused to produce a written part time offer or contract. I resigned, allowing 30 days to help transition my caseload to my replacement, but management chose to make my resignation immediate leaving the families in my caseload abruptly abandoned. 

The clinicians and support staff at Solace are some of the brightest most caring people I have ever met -- they are the heart and soul of the company. The onboard and ongoing training is thorough and professional. The opportunities to learn and grow are plentiful through trainings, interdisciplinary meetings, and collaboration in the field. The benefits package is excellent. I loved the families in my caseload.

Given the touted values and vision of this company – which I believe every clinician and support staff member lives and breathes – I was disappointed to learn how hypocritical the clinical managers were by their abandonment of truth and honor. 

My advice to potential new clinician hires: If there are terms you need in your contract to ensure you can maintain your life/work balance, personal health, and presence with your family, make sure they are written into your contract. Management cannot be trusted to keep their word.

Solace Home Healthcare is a wonderful company to work for.  I have worked in clinical, educational, and medical settings as a speech language pathologist over many years, and Solace is among the best!  At Solace, from the owner of the company to the administrative team, to the office support teams, to many other SLPs, OTs, PTs and nursing, I have consistently observed and experienced dedication to a common goal of supporting quality care for children and families. As a therapist I get to put my energy and focus into doing the work of an SLP, providing therapy services, and creating supportive relationships with families and children, while the office teams consistently provide on-going support for all of the referrals, authorizations, insurance, medical contacts, billing, and related “details” to keep services running smoothly – and are very kind and friendly in the process! In addition, this company makes a strong effort in communicating openly with employees, providing monthly regional breakfasts, holding collaboration meetings among providers and administrators, and seeking to integrate and take seriously questions, comments, and suggestions for increasing success and ease in the day to day work. Most of us in the educational/healthcare field, who are dedicated to providing services to others, know that at times there are documentation requirements, scheduling, or other demands that also take our time and energy. In my experience, the teams at Solace are continually seeking ways to streamline “paperwork,” increase efficiency of operations, and support the providers “in the field” while never losing sight of the families and children. This makes my job easier, more rewarding, and something I can do with my ethics and integrity intact.

I worked at Solace for over 5 years, starting as an OT and moving my way into various other roles including management. Solace is truly a wonderful company that cares about their mission to help children and families. Their core values and mission drive their decision making at all levels of the organization, from the leadership team to clinicians to the office staff. Solace provides great benefits and perks to employees and the work environment is extremely positive and supportive. The training program is comprehensive and top notch, the processes and systems are innovative and cutting edge,  and their philanthropic initiatives in the community are simply amazing. There are many opportunities to grow and advance within the company and they are constantly seeking feedback from employees to continually make improvements, ensuring that Solace remains the best home health agency to work for.

Above all else, the people and culture at Solace are like no other and one I feel extremely fortunate to have been a part of. I went through an extremely difficult time in my life facing the lose of my spouse and my colleagues and managers stood by my side and got me through. Having the support of my work family truly made all the difference for my family. It is not often in life that one can say this about their place of employment. While life has taken me on another path, I will be forever grateful for my time at Solace. Thank you to my Solace Family!

A Seasoned Nurse 25+yrs, ex-military at that. So, have had plenty of experience with the civilian side of nursing. Being a home health nurse you don't have the pleasures of working with a lot of co-workers to build a comradery you normally would in a hospital setting.
Working with PHC has definitely set the bar for a company being  personable with their employees as well as their clients to help establish a comradeship usually only found in a hospital setting and the ones found in the military. 
I've been with the company for 3yrs and there hasn't come a time  when I've been made to feel less than family with the entire office staff. The staff working the office is consistent. You're not speaking to one office staff member one day and another one another day. Turn around is almost non-existent in the office, major plus.
Several annual functions/events are held in recognition of the Nursing Staff, not just during Holiday Seasons, practically nonexistent to any other Home Health Agency I've been employed with.
Overall, they're a great company to work for with competitive wages and benefits(which most agencies do not offer) that takes care of their employees.
So, if you're an experienced nurse who'd like to venture into something new or different like Pediatric Home Health, I recommended giving these guys a try, you'll be glad you did.

Solace is the place to work if you are a therapist in the Denver metro area or if you are looking to move to Denver at some point in the future. I moved from out of state and started with Solace when I arrived here. I have consistently been impressed with this organization, starting from training. Training was a week long and VERY thorough. My iPad, email, everything was ready to go when I started on day one. The support from the office team and administration is top notch. I can reach someone when I need something and that is invaluable when I am in the field working with my kids. 

Solace has a clear focus on culture and everything they do is to make this the best place to work as a therapist. And, I know this is the same for our office crew as well. They are always looking for feedback from us in the field through surveys, and I see a response to the surveys as well. 

We are given the best technologies available and everyone has a wonderful caseload of kids and families that we treat on a regularly basis. There is no shortage of referrals, so I have been full from my second week starting here. 

Although this home health, the driving is not so bad because my families are in a close area near my home. I love the freedom of making my own schedule and I just love my kids. I feel VERY blessed to work here and wanted to share my experience.

I have been with the company for a year, and after being a clinician for 4 years in a variety of outpatient settings and large institutions, I can honestly say that this is the best company I have worked for. Every company has it's challenges, and this one does as well, but the leadership team and clinicians are constantly trying to be better and do better in order to create the most positive and successful work environment. Management is available to help clinicians out in the field, and the health information and nursing staff in particular are extremely helpful in making phone calls to physicians and completing administrative/paperwork tasks so that the clinician can focus on providing services to the patients and families. This is definitely something that makes a huge difference in this setting. Most of the other home health companies I looked into required the therapists to make all these phone calls, which takes up an incredible amount of time. Clinicians support one another in the field and have the opportunity to co-treat with other therapists, which is a great learning experience. Monthly meetings are a great way to get some face-time in an otherwise independent setting, and I always feel comfortable reaching out to other therapists and management staff to set up in-person meetings when I have questions or concerns.

I have been working at Solace as an SLP for over two years and I am always impressed by the innovation of the company and the support from managements and coworkers. Solace was fully prepared by the time shelter in place orders came through due to COVID-19 and the company is working remotely at the moment. Therapists Quickly worked together to share resources during this time and Troubleshoot any technology issues. My coworkers are always willing to go above and beyond when it comes to helping each other. It is an incredible opportunity to work alongside other SLPs, OTs and PTs. The company is also working to be more green and is paperless. Every therapist gets an iPad for taking notes and getting answers to frequently asked questions through a manual on google drive. 

This is my fourth job as an SLP and I have learned far more about the field in this home health setting compared to previous settings I Worked in. I highly recommend working here whether this is your first job or tenth! The flexibility of scheduling and location is unbeatable. You can create the schedule you want such as working 4 days/week and you can choose how many kids you want on your caseload. We work with a lot of toddlers but also see school aged kids and its fun to have the variety.
