Compensation is high in order to convince you to put up with poor management. In 2019, per diem rates started at 44/hr for Tech I, Tech II goes up to 48. No annual raises for per diem. Per diem at Cedars is usually 40hrs per week but they don't have regular schedules usually even for full time employees so your schedule is often shifting making it difficult to have a life. Schedules are made for 1.5mo at a time, also making it difficult to get time off since most people don't like to trade shifts. Per diems only get  SICA days off a year (24hrs), anything else is unpaid time off and they have a bunch of rules about "incidents" that can cause you to get written up if you take non-SICA time off at certain times. Lunches are 45 minutes.

They like to micromanage which breeds a culture of laziness with a few of the staff doing the lion's share of the work and others slacking off, particularly on the evening shifts. Techs will sit around until they're told what to do and then sit around after that task is complete until they're told to do something else. I've seen a tech do 2 portable CXR in 2 HOURS on an evening shift. We've had complaints of a tech doing 24+ cases in 6 hours getting pulled out of the ED to help on portables for the last 2 hours when all of the other 3 techs that could have been doing portables have done 30 cases COMBINED.

It's not uncommon for poor communication to result in you getting called to do a stat and then 2 minutes later being called to do something else and another 2 minutes later being told to go and do the first thing again. Even stupider is when this happens and you show up to perform the stat and there is a coworker there finishing it as you show up. This is a weekly if not daily occurrence from poor management and communication in the imaging department.

Management doesn't have your back at all. When you're starting out, they'll cover for you a little as you're learning but after a couple mistakes they're going to start riding you hard and always bringing up your errors in every little conversation to the point that you start to dread any talks with management. Any time they do help you with something, they hold it over you for a long time too. You'll be hearing about that day off you got for a funeral for the next few months. You also can't fix many of your own errors here. Techs can't do anything to PACS and everything has to be called in to get it fixed.

They've been decent about giving a couple guys time off for school but only on the first negotiation. Trying to change your schedule after that is a nightmare and they often say no. They also hold a grudge when you try to get a schedule to allow 2 jobs. They really don't like that.

Cedars used to be a great place to work. People would come to work everyday with a sense of pride and even ownership. We all had a job to do, but if someone needed help with a particular task, then if you could, you would help them out. Someday, they would return the favor when they were able to. There was a great sense of camaraderie. 

Fast forward a few years… If you need help with something, good luck! Better plan to just tough it out. It’s not that your coworkers don’t want to help (most of them do), it’s that there is so much work piled on everyone, that you can never even get your own job done, yet alone try to help someone else. 

Nowadays, most of us drag ourselves to work and then hope to make it through each day without another duty being piled onto our already existing (overwhelming) pile of work. When you try to approach management about your concerns, you get answers like “Oh, I am sure you will figure it out somehow.” Management definitely plays favorites, so if you are one of the lucky ones, you get nice raises, bonuses, flexible hours, and you get to pick and choose your assignments. Otherwise, your reward for hard work is more work, the minimum raise they are allowed to give (if anything), and better be on time and plan to be there your full eight hours (or more.) It's not actually stated (because it's illegal), but the expectation is that you work through your lunch break. We are often assigned new duties, but without any corresponding increase in pay. At the end of the day, don't accrue any overtime, but I know of many people here who clock out at the end of their shift and then stay on their own time to get things done. 

The entire organization is top heavy with management (middle management on up) but there is not enough actual staff to get the work done. It’s always seemed that way (top heavy with management), but in today’s work environment, it’s even more obvious than it used to be. Turnover is high in the lower level positions and once someone leaves, they typically don’t fill the vacancy. There are constant cutbacks and entire departments have been cut, while others have been slashed by at least half. You’re happy to get through another day without an announcement that your area will be next. 

Everyone is expected to use a cell phone for work, but only those in management positions are provided with one by Cedars.

The typical day at work was honestly a little boring. I would read magazines/books inside the gift shop all day when the population of customers were low. I would sometimes do extra work there in the back of the shop. This work consisted of stocking merchandise in the reservation room. In the gift shop, I believe the best thing I learned was how to appreciate the responsibilities of having a job. That experience in generally working generally made me feel good about myself. It was like empowering and motivational all at the same time. Management in the gift shop was superb. Everyone who worked there including me had their own little jobs to complete. Everything was in order and in perfect symmetry which made our lives much easier. No one had to do someone else's job. My co-workers which I called my mentors were two women who were excellent mentors. They were the ones who gave me my jobs. They gave me the best instructions to easily do my job and even gave me free food sometimes for the hard work I had done. Also they were really nice people. They became my friends during my time in the hospital and I shall never forget them. I think the hardest part of my job in the gift shop was answering the phone calls from the patients and nurses/doctors. Most of the time I could not understand what they were saying and I had to keep saying, "Can you repeat that sir!" or "Could you repeat that ma'am!" The most enjoyable part of the job there in the gift shop was delivering gifts to patients. I absolutely loved that job. During deliveries I would explore the other sections inside the hospital which satiated my boredom. What was really most enjoyable and heart-warming to me though was helping out patients with their illnesses and seeing them recover over time. I had faith that they would one day get better and by me delivering to them what they needed only furthered my desire to help them get better.

It was incredibly frustrating to work for a manager who had less experience than her entire team. Not only did she have less experience, but she didn’t even try to learn the content, was incredibly unprofessional/immature, pushed all the work on our team without ever trying to help or learn what we were doing, and was unable to ever give us any sort of constructive feedback. I don't think she ever taught a single person on our team anything (which is also why she said she wants to hire her friends who have no experience - so she can "teach" someone something).

My manager spent most of her time shopping online, gossiping with her friends in the office, doing school projects, studying for finals, and writing school papers while we worked hard to improve our quality scores. The only thing she ever did was ask us to send her email summaries of what we were doing so she could copy and paste it to other people (without understanding what we actually did).

There were countless times where we heard comments from other departments in the organization noticing the lack of knowledge in our manager. There were people who would actually come up to us and say that they knew we were the ones doing all the work. This has been going on for a year and unfortunately no action was ever taken and no improvements were ever made. It was embarrassing to hear so many other people within the Medical Network make comments about your boss. I did not want that reflected on me.

While I did enjoy the work and the organization, I needed to have a boss who could help me grow professionally, and unfortunately she did not have the capability and knowledge to do that. Also, it was frustrating knowing that she would be rewarded with large bonuses for work that the team did that she has no knowledge of.

I worked there for 16 years. I was loyal to Cedars to a fault. Sadly the management did not like me from the get go. I was absorbed into another department and since then the management treated me poorly. Speaking to me as if I was a child. I fulfilled my job duties, at times working three different jobs to maintain my managers happy with my performance. They would never compensate us for doing other jobs. It was just expected from us, when I did request compensation they simply stopped asking me to work the third job. They would rather not have us work more work to not compensate us. It began to get very stressful working with my supervisor and manager. In one instance my supervisor yelled at me for following the procedures put in place by them. The management team needs to be replaced with equal opportunity members. They never gave me more than a 2% raise. That was all 16 years working there and maintaining my productivity high as well as my error rates being less than 1% of what I entered in a day. When I went to HR about this treatment they simply stated nothing could be done about the past but we could work through the issues with my supervisor and manager. In the end I was let go for errors and slander on their behalf of me. I believe if the management would have been different, I would still be there. If they were truly all inclusive more of their employees would still be there. The company is a great company but the management needs some growth. Other of my coworkers were let go simply for speaking up about mistreatment by other co-workers.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Everything; never knowing what you'd walk into each day. 
Years of failed management, lack of support & resources.  Zero praise or appreciation.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
AWFUL! So much gossip & backstabbing, worse than in high school.  They obviously don't care about the company mission as it starts at the top & they should be setting the example of what they claim to be & claim to provide to their patients.  Multiple patient complaints received daily, they preferred putting fires out opposed to correcting the issues.  Reactive not Proactive!!  So frustrating.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Depending on the specific role, & IF all staff show up, a day will be filled with room patients, taking brief medical history & documenting in emr.  Process patients & send to x-ray, checking out patients providing prescriptions & or handouts explaining treatment recommendations.  Obtaining authorizations from W/C & Private Insurances for doctor's recommendations.  Review patients messages & return calls.  Arrange recommended tests or treatments for the patients in a timely manner.  Greet patients, clean & sanitize exam rooms in between each & every patient.  Stock nurses stations & exam rooms weekly.  Assist with inventory, supplies, disability forms, opening & dispersing mail, scheduling surgery, etc.

I was initially so honored and excited to accept a job offer from Cedars. I was so happy about my salary I literally felt this company was going to take me to the next level. However, soon after starting I soon saw that it’s not what it’s cracked up to be. First of all the benefits are not good and that’s probably  one of the reasons why they have a high turn over. It’s no way that I will give up my federal position with impeccable benefits and work here full time. This is not a place for working mothers with sickly or elementary aged children. 

40 hrs of  sick leave a year and a policy of a 5 Years employment requirement in order to become vested, as well as making you wait a whole year before the company starts to match your 401(k) only one PPO plan and or 2 HMO plans to choose from and only offering 2 different Delta Dental plans and 1 vision company option are NOT great benefits. This is definitely a great place to work for per-diem but for FT absolutely not... Unless this doesn’t bother you. Also, please considering factoring in your mandatory deductions:

(which at Cedars are for more deductions than other places which does not include standard deductions),

~ your salary vs your actual take home amount before considering FT employment with them.

 Now if you have several degrees and don’t  mind these things please proceed. But if you’re still in school or your current employer has better benefits do not leave that job..... You’ve been warned! Now yes they have tuition reimbursement but the cap on that still is not worth it.

Cedars Sinai Medical Center is a organization that promotes growth, excellence, education as well a health. The work day begins by setting up the emegin program we use to alter RN when patients are in need, hand out voalte phones, answer all triage calls, documenting, ordering supplies for unit and many other task. Assisting  with any need or concerns regarding patients. I learned very valuable information regarding medical conditions, medical terminology, what to do in the event of a code blue and many other wonderful things! Management always made time to come by and check on the unit to assure all needs were met. The dynamic of Cedars was very diverse and understanding in regards to ones religion, age, sex and cultural values and customs. The hardest part of the job is seeing the children ill but we as a team would help the patients and families feel as comfortable as possible during their hospitalization. The best part of the job was seeing the smile on the patients and families faces as they prepared to be discharged and seeing that their recovery was successful. have had some of the most amazing experiences and I will forever cherish all the wonderful people I met along the way of my six wonderful years spent working at Cedars. I want to move forward and contribute all the knowledge, work ethic and skills I possess to another organization which will allow me to continue to grow professionall

As a float pool nurse almost every day I can expect a different group of patients  except the days that i am assigned to do indirect patient care.That is the beauty  of being a career float nurse.  A typical day my shift start at 7 am , I  meet on the assigned unit,attended the unit morning huddle where we all learned about the acuity ,type of patient ,who is at risk for fall,possible discharge,surgery,code status,etc.
After huddle we do a hand off report  at the bedside, where the patients are allow to  verbalize their input. Discharge rounds/progressive care rounds start between 10am and 11am.

Based on my practices,I prioritized each patient individual needs,provided patient care based on the patient population. Provided customer services to all my patients, the type that I would like if it was me or my family in that bed.
The hardest part of my job are not able to help a patient with  chronic pain,get  with at least 70% pain relief.

My most enjoyable time is when spend  at least 5 minutes of my time and make a cup of tea for a patient that might be feeling down or worried about something. I also enjoyed knowing that somehow I make a difference in at least one patient life every  day that I worked.Nursing is a true passion for me .

A typical day at work would be an average of 40 patients. Managing the work flow and time in between each patient check-in or check-out, answering numerous of phone calls, on top of doctors orders was challenging but as a staff we made it work. I learned the true meaning of team work. There were 3 ladies (including myself) that ran the front office. We all had to communicate among each other to ensure we provide each patient/parent with excellent customer service. The management team was awesome! They believed in our winning team and allowed us to make decisions to run a better workplace. The whole staff was just incredible! From the RNs, LVN's, and Doctors. I loved being apart of the team in Peds Outpatient Clinic. WE all got along great. The hardest part of the job was contacting insurance companies regarding patients policies but only because it was time consuming. The most enjoyable part of the job was that we grew to genuinely love our patients. Most of their parents were really nice. Some were nasty but given their circumstances of certain diagnosis of their children, we all understood. I wish I could be apart of their time. I feel they valued their employees and the time we all spent at the workplace. Thank you for giving me that opportunity to be apart of your company.
