A typical day at work consisted of answering the phones that rung non stop; Greeting fellow employees, clients and visitors; Directing people to the bathroom; Directing people to the appropriate training room; Letting employees know when their client arrived; Making sure visitors/clients signed in on the appropriate sign in sheet; Making sure first time visitors filled out an intake sheet; Letting people into the building; Making copies, sending faxes, sending out emails; Cleaning out the community refrigerator every Friday. Very busy throughout the day and fast paced. I learned patience when dealing with individuals who suffered from Mental health issues. The relationship I had with my supervisor of 3 1/2 years was great. We had a personal and business relationship. If I had a problem with something she tried her best to resolve it. My co-workers were great people to work with. We worked together to make the job easier for all of us. The hardest part of the job for me in the beginning of my employment was not understanding how to deal with clients who did not take their medication and how that made them act. Trying to explain how are services worked after the client was told incorrect information was very difficult because their patience on the matter didn't exist. It wasn't until I received training on how to deal with clients that fell into that category that I understood how to communicate better with them. The most enjoyable part of the job was letting someone know of the community that they were eligible to receive benefits that they didn't know they could get.

CUCS is a great organization for social workers and case managers who are new to the field. They have great trainings and overall helpful supervision. I worked there for one year, though noticed that I was paid a much lower salary than many of my friends who had obtained jobs fresh out of their MSW programs. Programs often have high turnover rates and it sometimes feels that upper managment doesn't understand the difficulty of high case loads. Many of my co workers would often skip their lunches just to see clients or get paperwork done. I will say that it is easy to go to supervisors with your concerns, and they are often empathetic and try to make accommodations, but it can be difficult. The most enjoyable part of the job is getting to know the clients and having the support of co workers. However, if you're looking to make more than 50k, you're going to have to wait until you move up in the company or find a new workplace.

I worked for CUCS right out of school.  each program has their own culture, but they also strive to have an agency wide culture of respect.  The have very high standards for staff, but I think that's a good thing, because it means everyone works hard, not just a few people.  Those high standards also mean that clients receive quality care and as a staff member you feel good about the work at the end of the day.

There is a lot of complaining about the health insurance, but honestly it's fine.  And they have other good benefits.  The employer contribution to retirement plans is low, but otherwise the benefits are above average for social services. 

They put a lot of value on staff development.  That said its very hard for someone without an MSW to move up past a certain level.  But there are scholarships available and they support employees doing their internships at work.

Working at CUCS has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career. This agency truly sets the standard for what it means to serve and support individuals from underserved populations. CUCS not only provides exceptional care to clients but also fosters an environment of continuous learning and professional growth for its staff.
As a Clinical Supervisor, I’ve gained invaluable knowledge and experience that have deepened both my clinical and leadership skills. At CUCS our goal is to help improve the lives of  our client population by providing excellent evidence based  case management services. As the senior director of the Uptown and Scattered Site programs my job is to provide administrative/clinical oversight of DOHMH , HUD, DHS and NYNY congregate and supportive scattered site housing units. I manage contract compliance, outcomes, analyze data, ensure accuracy of reports to government and private funders with a budget  totaling $2 million dollars annually. 
As one of the major leaders in the field of service delivery to the mentally ill, homeless and formally homeless population,  a highlight of working at CUCS is  that the organization believe in training staff to remain relevant.

working at CUCS has its ups and downs. The benefits are great there is even a plan where you dont pay any premium but just pay a discounted out of pocket expense when you go to the doctors. Which is great for those who rarely see the doctor. Management is a little lax and the home office is forever changing their policies on certain things without informing the entire company. The pay is below average for the market but that's supposed to change pretty soon. Co-workers are pleasant. Hardest part of the job would be dealing with the clients. There's always job postings being sent out for people to advance to the next level.  They are very big on continuing education and offer very informative training's that employees can attend every month. All in all its a very good company to at least start out with.

Overlooked computer users issues connectivity, Learn how to to use MDM Air watch, learned how to program and connect Avaya phoned server and phone system, learned how to enable and disable building security codes, learned how to use security video cameras using DVR.

Workplace culture was slow. relax, changing printer toners, the hardest part was dealing with vendors who did not delivered on time for user's request.

The most enjoyable part of my job was dealing with users, they were all friendly and they enjoy when I work with them, they were always happy and the end of the task requested when I was finished.

The office manager's role which I'm currently in is quite challenging. The office manager is responsible for managing over 35 employees, multi tasks several loads through out the day. The office manager is a key component to the program functionality and requires a great deal of attention. The most rewarding aspect of the job is that the office manager has a lasting impact on ensuring that the staff is equip and ready for the day's work, thus ensuring our clients are happy, safe and comfortable.

My typical work day while working at CUCS was always different. My regular work would always get put on hold to figure out past mistakes done by the AR before me. I learned Blackbaud systems while there through vigorous trainings. My co- workers were kind and helpful when they could be but most of the time I was on my own. The hardest part of the job was finding mistakes done by 2 previous AR who were there within such a short period of time. Enjoyable parts of the job were the people and the training i went through.

The comraderie and room to grow and develop.

Not being paid your worth.

The culture has changed from an employee-centered agency to a bottom-line-focused agency based on administrative changes.
