This place goes off of the good ol boys system, so meaning if you've been there awhile a lot of shady stuff gets covered up by management. They use all paper records, so if something happens that is going to fall upon upper management, the paperwork seems to disappear quite often. It's gone to never be seen again. Major things have been pushed under the rug and completely dropped as if it never happened if it's going to affect upper management. For the patients and other staff members that's no good at all. The hospital is so horribly unstaffed that there's two techs, and IF your lucky two nurses for the biggest unit they have there which beds 37 patients. Two techs for 37 patients is ridiculous, how are the patients supposed to get the help they truly need when staffing is so limited...the patients ultimately suffer due to it. And you have to realize these patients truly need help, some are detoxing, in for psychosis and many of other things that are truly serious issues that they are trying to get help with.  It all boils down to the money, less techs, less nurses, the less the hospital has to pay out...still taking in patients, the hospital still makes the money from them. That is until the patients insurance runs out, then bam...they seem to be discharged shorty after. If a patient has great insurance, or multiple insurance plans...the patients seems to be in for months on end. It's all a game and it's really not right. Just be prepared to do the work of what should be really done amongst 4 people min on the biggest unit there. Management say they appreciate all of us staff, but unfortunately it's very clear that it's all just talk. And staff turnover is unbelievable there, it's just truly sad and bad business.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing! Lots of nepotism and bad leadership.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Expectations not expected from various staff. Lots of staff got a free pass regarding bad behaviors, not doing their work, not passing meds as they should, not showing up, not addressing patients needs in a timely manner, or not at all. Poor leadership was a big issue and it was covered up.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful and toxic. RN’s were not taken seriously with their complaints. Very often RN’s had very legitimate concerns but when they were discussed during staff meetings, nothing ever changed. And again, it was common to see certain staff, RN’s and techs, get away with things that weren’t right.  Everyone  else was held to a much higher standard and expected to pick up the slack, and if they didn’t perform they were written up, or worse, they were fired. If someone was a personal friend or family member of the charge RN or the nursing supervisor, they could pretty much do whatever they wanted and get away with it. It happened all the time, especially at SSM in Wentzeville, Missouri. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very long 12 hour shifts. Just a lot of work. The expectation was you were supposed to spend the majority of your time on the floors with your patients. But you were also expected to stay on top of all of your documentation. It was extremely hard finding the balance and forget taking breaks.

I would usually triage new patients waiting to be assessed for treatment. Sometimes other hospitals would refer patients to us for admission. Mostly the co-workers were good, but I felt like a lot of the middle management really had issues. When I left, the new supervisor in A/R treated it more like an arm of the marketing department instead of treating it as a clinical department. I had a lot of disagreements with the way my direct supervisor ran our department, as well as the priorities of the upper management. The most difficult part of the job is "contest of wills" between the patient, insurance company, and admitting doctor. Sometimes the doctor would admit the patient to a level of care the insurance company wasn't willing to cover, or the patient was wishy-washy about even having treatment. It wasn't infrequent for the doctors to belittle the staff in the intake office, which is a great deal of the reason I left. I can't recommend CenterPointe unless you're a counselor-in-training seeking licensure. Two years there to get all your supervised hours is as much as anyone can handle there.

individual units are supportive of each other. Upper management does not look deeply enough to see the hard work that employees do, they will only speak to you if a negative situation arises. There is such a turn-over of employees which hurts the overall purpose of this hospital. New employee's are not trained well enough to even step foot on a unit. This is the fault of upper management again. And now, techs are not even required to have any background in behavioral health, especially on the acute and cd units. If upper management would treat its employees with respect and dignity as well, show appreciation for a job well done, in turn the employee's would be more motivated to help the population that they serve. Why is it that a company like this, ( a mental health hospital)  not even know the psychology of treating it's staff better and in turn will have less employee turnover and as a company that is known to be staff oriented, will by word of mouth, see such a rise in admissions and be known for it's great customer care. Take care of employees first then everything positive will happen to a company like this. However, this hopital is not at this level yet.

CenterPointe Hospital served the behavioral health community very well.  The office and working conditions in Administration were very nice.  The owner/psychiatrist was a very good businessman and forward thinking.

The most rewarding part of the job was the variety it offered with travel arrangements, meeting coordination, expense reports, cell phone account, credit card account reconciliation.

The most challenging, but rewarding, was the planning and coordination of the Committee and quarterly Board meetings.

Being a new and medium sized hospital allowed for first-hand growth.  The hospital grew at a very fast pace.  Ideas were put into place very quickly without all the bureaucracy of larger companies.

The company allowed and required that its employees worked as a team.  There were limited resources with regards to personnel.  We all pitched in and helped one another as a team.  We learned the organization from the ground up.

Several years ago an company bought this hospital. Since then, patient care is no longer the objective, focusing all efforts to reduce cost and increase profits. Administration is completely disconnected on how to work on the units and the concerns of their employees. Staff has become increasingly more negative since the changes and it has become a very negative environment. Very high turn over and no employee appreciation. (oh but if the census is really high and the profits are good, you might get a monthly lunch from subway.....) place is a joke, People get hurt and state has been to the facility many times over the recent months because of this. Still, there is no additional consideration for staffing or employee wellbeing, which directly impacts the patient care.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Seeing some patients benefit from the services.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of training and lack of staff. Also  the hierarchy within the hospital staff employees. Some those in higher positions didn't value or respect employees in lesser positions.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very disorganized. Its so short staffed that no one can properly do their own jobs. You may be one person but required to pick up the slack of 2  or 3 other employees who are not available.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Disorganized and chaotic and not because of the patients but because of the staff or lack of.

The patients, purpose and co-workers are the very best parts of this job. There is a huge disconnect between employee's and management. One directional communication was attempted to bridge this gap, with limited results. The hierarchy of positions is seen from available office space to available parking and bathrooms. Many co-workers are supportive, flexible and willing to pitch-in to help as needed. I learned a fair amount from the pharmaceutical representative.

This was the worst job I had. I loved the flexibility with the schedules and made decent money. Most of management are nightmares and HR is even more awful. This was a very political environment. Policies are written but never followed, and problems/issues are never resolved. There is no opportunity to further a career, and referral bonuses are only given to clinical staff. 

There was a point when there was real compassion from the entire faculty, but now it's all about collecting. Departments hardly ever work together anymore, and everyone points the finger and hands off issues instead of getting a real resolution.

This place only cares about how many beds can be filled. They don’t care about the accuity of the pts or staffs workload. There is no security to help in dangerous situations, in fact if there is a problem the supervisor threatens pts that they will call the Charles co police. It is a very dangerous and disorganized place. If you have a brain and question anything, this isn’t the place for you. And if you stand up for yourself or your pts, you will be laughed at, made fun of or just ignored. Management does NOT care!!!
