Working here you will feel demoralized due to the unsupportive supervisors/ directors/ charge nurses on your unit. Charge nurses do not help, they will stay in their office and not assist in your admission even if you feel like you are drowning. They will not take report for you if you are your lunch break. There is no thing as team work. Leadership and management need to change, they’re unsupportive when you bring up concerns regarding your work environment. You have things constantly breaking like cellphones or IV pumps. On our telemetry floor there are only two vital sign machines that you have to wheel around, which is very time consuming. Their barcode scanners don’t scan certain meds, and it’ll be the only model of scanner you have on the floor, you will trouble shoot things that take up so much time and make your job harder. They hire registry CNAs that are not properly trained and are lazy so much so that you end up picking up their work by either doing your own vitals or inputting your own vitals and cleaning your patients. Charge nurses do not reprimand these CNAs at all. So what ends up happening is  not only are you the nurse but your the CNA AS WELL. This facility just makes your job harder than it should be, and that’s the epitome of working here. And you know who suffers because we cannot do our job with the required equipment and support? You guessed it, the patient.

Medical staff is anything but compassionate toward patients, visitors, and fellow employees. A typical work day includes stressful situations arising between combative visitors and regularly admitted 51-50 patients in the emergency room. Medical staff has a natural hostile demeanor towards customers and patients, which results in routine Code Grey calls and Security professionals being placed at risk for injury. Management is mostly concerned with profit and not the well-being of their employees who are placed in dangerous situations regularly. Co-workers are negative and hostile with a mission to degrade anyone with aspirations or a vision of long-term success. There is a deficiency in team work and support in all departments, especially Security. The hardest part of the job is having to protect inconsiderate and disrespectful co-workers who refuse to appreciate or acknowledge the effort of Security professionals trained to de-escalate combative situations. However, the most enjoyable aspect of the job is providing customer service and compassion to our visitors that helps them smile when they are stressed about their patients suffering from grave conditions.

Great opportunity working in Centinela Hospital from 2008 to current date.  I've learned a lot of things esp health care settings "how the hospital operates" from admission regardless of insurance coverage via ER to acute care; the discharge planning process prior discharging the patients with post acute care follow-up.  Great experienced working with the professional team like Case Manager their strong clinical thinking/ discharge planner their strong commitment in placing patients / social workers their compassion with the patients and expertised and knowledgeable directors their contributions to enhanced our thoughts; support of administration.  Dealing with different departments from admitting office to health information management to business office.  Aside from patient care in clinical aspect I've learned the financial aspect through insurance coverage .  Dealing with others workers regardless of their prospective cultures and beliefs  was not difficult in dealing with as long as you respect them.  Having a good environment is a great factor too when it comes to safety and security.  Staying in this hospital for 10 years is totally remarkable for me when it comes to career experience .

I've only been here for 7 months and I feel that the stress of being an RN here is not worth staying for more than a year , maybe 2 at most. You learn a lot... probably more than any other hospital around.. but let me tell you this is not an easy hospital to work at. In fact, given the low pay, little resources, combined with some of the sickest patients you'll ever see, you'll leave this hospital with a few bald patches on your head but the best Nurse in the area cause we do everything on our own here . Ive had days with no charge nurse , no CNAs, 3 to 4 computers not scanning for meds, discharging 3 to 4 patients while admitting 2 on the same day, meds late so having to call pharmacy, meal trays missing so having to call dietary, setting up ambulance rides to this place and that place, the list goes on.. now I appreciate my wonderful coworkers who are kind, supportive, and do want to see everyone succeed. However the workload is sometimes beyond imaginable. Overall, good hospital to start at for experience on truly being an strong independent nurse who can handle ANY situation, but bad hospital to stay in the long run. Nobody can take it which is why everyone quits within a year and we are always short...And I mean ALWAYS.

This hospital experiences high turnover, especially among new graduates, except for foreign nurses who are tied to 3-year contracts with visa sponsorship. Many of these nurses even break their contracts, paying penalties to move to jobs with safer conditions and better pay. Meanwhile, some nurses and CNAs, particularly those from the department supervisor's church and of the same cultural background, seem to enjoy protection from leadership and never face termination, despite issues with performance, thanks to union advantages.

Skilled nurses often leave within a year, as leadership appears more focused on securing government funding than on patient care. The hospital prioritizes bringing in homeless individuals from nearby streets, many of whom are familiar with "the system" and display entitlement rather than appreciation for the healthcare team.

The environment is chaotic, with frequent emergencies like code blues and code silvers, and there's no real mentorship. Nurses are left to learn on their own for daily survival. However, much of what they experience here doesn't translate well to other healthcare settings.

When applying during the background check will need your W2 tax forms past 7-years of employment. The doctors communicate with nurses and marketers. The pay is below market value. Some nurses will help you but don't expect the grass to always be green. They have their own EHR. The job is simple but you work with a lot of restrictions from your own department. All of the referrals you send are by fax. There's a lot of patient discharges. Medical benefits only EPO through their doctors only. The food is excellent in the cafeteria. The Interim Director is excellent. The marketers bring in lunch. There is overtime. The doctors put in their preferred nursing home or home health. You arrange an ambulance - the doctor will never notify Case Management. They'll notify the nurse but not you to hold the discharge. If you're doing an assessment - the nurse comes in and cuts you off. The nurses are Union. You're non-Union. The hospital can be great if there's transparency from the doctors to patients and case management. Even the patients don't like to stay.     

Working in an Emergency room a typical day consists of interacting with patients, patients family members, nurses and doctors. My position is essentially to help the nurses and doctors in patient care. That may be anything ranging from conducting an EKG to making sure that everything is stocked and in working order.
I have learned a great deal working at Centinela Hospital Medical Center. I have learned to work along side many different personalities and under incredibly stressful situations.
I enjoy working with many people in an ever changing environment. I mean this literally, at my hospital we mainly hire new grad RN's. Consequently, the turn over rate for RN's in the emergency room.
The hardest part of this job is seeing death and violence any given night.
I find many things enjoyable about this job; such as,being part of a team that helps stabilize a critical patient to just helping them smile when they are in the Emergency Room.

A very busy ER that doesn't compensate it's workers in line with the amount of work they do. For new grads RNs the benefit is it's one of the few places they can go straight into ER and trade off is pay and benefits. But for a year to then be able to go pretty much anywhere, it's a pretty good deal. For everyone else, like the techs, it isn't. Between the workload, large psych, drug and homeless population, unfair task assignments based on favoritism, doctors who are allowed to act however they want and won't ever bother to learn your name, it's not worth it. Go to MLK and at least get paid more for same thing. 

As a new graduate nurse, my experience at Centinela Hospital Medical Center was disappointing due to poor training, chronic understaffing, and lack of support from leadership. The orientation felt rushed, with preceptors too overwhelmed to provide adequate guidance, leaving new nurses to figure things out on their own in unsafe conditions. High nurse-to-patient ratios and minimal support staff made it nearly impossible to provide quality care, leading to burnout and high turnover. Management showed little concern for staff well-being, dismissing safety concerns and failing to advocate for better working conditions. Additionally, pay was not competitive, career growth opportunities were limited, and the overall work culture was discouraging. For new grads seeking a supportive learning environment, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

For all the new graduates thinking about applying to Centinela Hospital, do not apply for medical surgical floor. Trust me, you will regret it.  I was on a 2 year contract and worked on this floor for 2 years coming out of nursing school.  There is no support from management on this floor. You will often be bullied by the charge nurse and unit director. They are both related and they are the biggest bullies I have ever encountered in a professional setting. The unit director does not care for the employees and will prevent you from advancing in your career.  She will abuse her position of authority and write you up countless times for the smallest things.  Thinking about transferring to another unit? Forget about it. She will report you to HR and put disciplinary action on your file. If they call you for open position on medical surgical floor, pass on it and wait for another unit to call you.
