Typical Day- Come in, take inbound and make out bound calls all day. You have to be on the dial-er for 7 hours a day and work 100 accounts and meet call quality standards. You are not entitled to your breaks. If you take too long to update an account or add insurance to accounts, etc, then you will get an Instant Message from your Lead telling you are taking too much time.

What I learned? I learned that Centra is all about making $$ and not caring about the community or patients. I learned that hiring is all about favoritism. My manager hired a mom and daughter for the same dept, which should be against policy. My manager got the manager job (with no college experience) just because she best friends with the director. I learned there is no official training...they just sit you with people and they show you the job. I learned that Managers don't like to be questioned or offered suggestions, even if its in the best interest of Centra. I learned that Centra LOVES to keep expanding their dominion over Lynchburg, and other areas in Virginia and taking over other facilities, but not supporting and helping existing offices.  Due to this, every dept is understaffed and creates turn over. Another example is where in 2013, they laid off over 100 nurses, well in 2014 they bought out Bedford Memorial and expanded to include the Gretna facility...so you fire people saying you don't have the money, but then all of a sudden you have money to expand your business...lol...classic!! I learned that Centra is not committed to fixing system issues that bother employees on a daily basis and upgrading systems. They use old systems that are very slow and always go down. Ultimately Centra is a Monopoly that just wants money and I'm SO glad I no longer work there. Also Centra engages in illegal activity by breaking the Fair Debt Practice Act and bills Patients when charges are not to be billed to patients, but written off.I learned that Centra posting Dept would apply payments to wrong accounts. I learned that there are thousands of credit balances that Centra never gives the money back to the patient. I learned there are so many billing issues and system issues, like I have never seen in my life. I learned that I no longer wanted to work for a corrupt and unethical company so I quit and left.

Management- OMG...where do I begin? I have one word...HORRIBLE!!!! They are rude, disrespectful and talk down to you. They don't like to be questioned and want 100% complete obedience. They don't care how things affect employees and don't want any input or suggestions. The last two employee surveys were a Bomb shell for management. They were required to come up with an action plan to improve things which they really didn't even share with the dept. Then when it was finally shared after we kept asking, nothing was implemented. Example, better communication. We were suppose to have monthly meetings, well that never happened. Suggestions taken more seriously was another improvement that was suppose to happen. That never happened. Any suggestions were blow off or simply ignored. My manager would literally go to meetings every day of the month with the director and go on 2+ hour lunches. My manager was never there to do her job, so she would delegate all her responsibilities to the lead on our team. I have never in my life worked for a company that is so unprofessional and incompetent 

Co-Workers- I loved my co-workers! We were a team and had each others back.

Hardest part of the job- Working for a manager who didn't like me. Working for a company who didn't really didn't care about their employees. Working with systems that were freeze, go down all the time. Not having an IT person on site. Working in a hostile working environment and worried about retaliation if you spoke out. Just the overall experience was so poisonous! 

The best part of my job- The pay, period.

Stay away from hospital-based clinical positions. Otherwise, enjoy.  I liked working for Centra, but I hated my individual department.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC
====================

I had a clinical position in Transport Services based out of Lynchburg.  I started working there in 2013 and left in 2015.  The department provided EMS services to Centra facilities and the occasional mutual aid call.  The department has potential to be very successful; however, it will always be held back by fundamental issues.

First, half of the shifts have nothing to do with EMS.  The department has two separate job duties: working on an ambulance and working on a wheelchair van.  Everyone who works for the department has to have a state EMS license, but only the Lynchburg employees have to use the wheelchair van.  This is a bad arrangement because no one spends good money on their certification to hook up wheelchair.

Second, ninety percent of the “calls” are non-emergency.  You will literally be driving around providing absolutely no patient care on the majority of calls (except for a stand vitals check) as most calls are to take a patient to or from a nursing home.

Third, the management team is out of touch with reality.  It consisted of a director, manager, and approximately eight supervisors.  It was very clear to everyone that they only cared about the finances, company prestige, and not being bothered with problems.  Employees were not relevant to them.  On top of that, all of the management was hired because of A) technical talent as opposed to managerial aptitude or B) seniority.  This creates a culture in which you aren’t appreciated and in which the company doesn’t even gain anything for it.

Fourth, the staffing situation is the worst I have ever seen.  They offer so much overtime because they can’t recruit and retain quality individuals and the current employees don’t want to come in.  (You can work twelve-hour shifts every day of every month if you want).  You will quickly learn who calls out sick and who the money-desperate ones are.  I showed up no less than ten times and was sent home because I didn’t have a partner.  (Couldn’t they have told me before I got there?)  You will get at least ten emails a day asking for people to come into work.  I was even called twice while I was working to come in.

Fifth, they try to run this department like it is a fire department with actual EMS responsibility.  Although some people say that you could expect it in an EMS field, you have no reasonable expectation to get off on time.  Management reserves the right to hold you for six hours beyond the end of your shift against your will.  While there are times where that would be appropriate, over 90% of the “calls” are non-emergency and thus don’t need to be assigned one minute before your shift ends (it happens very often) Additionally, you rarely got a lunch break.  The company’s HR policy was that every employee scheduled to work an eight-hour shift was entitled to an unpaid thirty-minute break; however, my department did not recognize this.

Finally, dispatchers operated most of the control in the day-to-day operations.  They have a status board that they are supposed to use to assign calls.  We as front line employees could have done a better job dispatching by just listening to the radio traffic.  They repeated sent ambulances to places to drop off a patient and to come back empty while sending an ambulance unloaded ambulance to the same facility to bring someone back.  This will not change as the supervisor for this group is really entrenched in the bureaucracy of the hospital due to her extracurricular activities.

Centra used to be a great place to work with employee satisfaction being important.  Had excellent managers who cared about staff.  I moved to another unit because of incompetent leadership in my unit and a couple of back stabbing coworkers and unit manager who played staff against each other.  Her only concern is with new staff members, picking her favorites to give special privileges i.e. not working holidays, weekends off, choice of schedule, allowing new nurses to move from night shift to day shift despite the fact there were nurses with more seniority who wanted a day shift position  and choosing her favorite nurses to serve on unit committees that she headed up and encouraged them to do all the work and then she took all the credit. Paid for new nurses to attend conferences while senior nurses had to pay for conference, travel and hotels. Included in her poor leadership skills is her inability  to separate personal feelings and professional feelings, giving hard working employees poor evaluations while given those who were less knowledgeable and minimal experience but were her chosen staff exceptional evaluations.  Even with poor surveys directed at the the unit manager and complaints from numerous staff for several years, no effort was made to correct problem resulting in the loss of many hardworking, excellent nurses, nursing assistants and health unit coordinators.  Complaints against this unit manager also came from ancillary staff, but upper management continued to support her.  All of this resulted in low morale, friction between staff, and decrease in work performance.  No cohesiveness within the unit making it difficult to care for 3 critically ill patients with no nursing assistants and staff pushed to the max with little time to help each other with those who were willing to help coworkers.  Unit manager unprofessional as were some of nurses who were more interested in flirtatious behavior and impressing physicians. Some nurses were told by the unit manager they disliked and hated by other staff who were refusing to work with then and then forced them to sign agreement that if that information was shared it would result in termination.  I now work in a unit where the unit manager is fair and cares about her staff.  I used to be proud to say I worked at Centra but not anymore.  Even though I now work in a much more pleasant work environment with a manager with good leadership skills I will never forget the way I and some of my coworkers were treated in my old unit.

Review of Centra Health:

The opacity surrounding reporting mechanisms perpetuates a climate of fear and uncertainty, where individuals are left vulnerable to retribution without recourse. Centra's ambiguous policies further exacerbate these issues, contributing to a lack of clarity and consistency in organizational conduct.

Regrettably, Centra's adherence to its mission statement and core values appears selective, favoring clinical and upper management personnel over others. This discrepancy underscores a fundamental misalignment between stated principles and operational realities.

In conclusion, Centra Health's failure to address systemic deficiencies in staff retention, management integrity, and HR support compromises its ability to fulfill its organizational mission. Meaningful reform is imperative to cultivate a workplace environment characterized by fairness, transparency, and genuine adherence to stated values.

My experience with Centra Health at Bridges has been very positive. Day shift involves being available to help teachers with students and redirecting students when they behave inappropriately. Second shift and non-school day shift involves oversight of a group of 5 or fewer students along with several other team members who are overseeing their own group. We assist the students with managing relationships with each other and offer them time play in the gym, do arts and crafts, play outside, go on outings. Night shift is from 10 PM -7:30AM if you prefer overnight work.

The team effort is a big plus in this position; we cover each others shifts and help with each other's groups and patient charting as needed. 

You are 'on duty' for all meals; you eat with the children so no need to pack lunch or eat breakfast before work and an 8 hour shift is truly 8 hours since you don't go off on your own to take a 30 min. or 60 min. lunch break.

The environment is constantly changing as staff may often change if they are working their way up the ladder and move on and also the residents needing care are continually changing. Never a dull moment!

The hardest part is you have to agree to work every other weekend but the number of hours you work can vary greatly; anywhere from 32 hrs./month up to full time. Also the learning curve can be slow/difficult because you have to learn the behavioral standards expected of the students and the staff keeps very busy working with the kids so taking time out to train is difficult and the kids know how to get you to do what they want and get around the rules so you have to stay on your toes.

I worked here as a new grad nurse across a couple different departments. My initial position on one of the ICUs promised a lot, but the orientation was weak at best. I had no assigned preceptors, no real schedule, I was thrown to whichever nurse worked that day, and there wasn’t a thought of signing off competencies until I had been off orientation for a month already. I loved the nurses I worked with but the management was truly awful - very high school mean girl, small town queen bee vibes. The manager openly bullied new nurses, myself and several others included (because the turnover rate was so high that most of us were baby nurses).

I eventually left that unit after about a year and moved on to one of the behavioral health departments. I had a lot more support there and I was given a ton of independence, which was great. The policies that were implemented were gross though, and showed a complete disregard for staff safety. For example, removing all in-unit security from the psych units, while knowing the nurses and staff were getting assaulted by patients - who does that? 

As a whole, Centra pays horribly; their benefits aren’t exactly stellar; their no nicotine policy blows my mind when they constantly complain that they are severely understaffed; and in general the operations of this organization are questionable at best. I adore many of the nurses and staff I worked with, but after moving to another state I have realized how weird this hospital system is. 

Absolutely has an aura of favoritism with seasoned staff versus those who are Temps or just out of their 90 days.
If you work in Supply, most of the units do not have respect for you and will run you ragged, not to mention be absolutely harsh on the phone if you don't know all the fancy nurse terms for items.
Management does not communicate well at all. If you have an issue, keep it to yourself and just pick up the double work left by people who don't want to do their share and then yet also don't get written up for performance issues. Problem on the team? Let's shove you over to another hospital and make it their problem.
The "this is a learning opportunity" needs to stop. People who aren't doing their share need written up. This sort of thing does not fly at any other workplace and it's why MOST people apply here. To skate along and get a check and shove extra work that would have taken 5min during their shift, thats now compounded into 1.5hours for the next shift because it purposely went ignored.
The differential isn't worth it either. Night shift should automatically make $18/hr especially if you're hiring people new to the field but have years of customer service experience they can bring to the table.


The pay is significantly low for similar positions in the area. LPN: rooms patients, does medication refills,  is responsible for all lab tests phlebotomy and POC testing, Prior authorizations and referrals that aren’t always completed due to short staffing. As well as calls patients with any lab results, questions or concerns including Triage. all while in between rooming patients, and drawing labs. Management demonstrates a lack of support for staff and  Many hire ups have Non medical backgrounds making things more complicated.  Supplies and vaccines were not available when needed For age specific patients.  Same day sick visits are not triaged appropriately receptionist is responsible for scheduling and put anyone who calls in on the schedule to be seen. Communication regarding protocols and policies is poor, and concerns are often dismissed.  A culture of negativity by management.  All they care about is numbers and money. Not a great job for someone with a family  or young kids. would not recommend this workplace to anyone seeking a healthy and sustainable career. Or seeking any sort of advancements. 

The management I experienced at Centra was one of the worst I had ever seen. I have never seen a boss openly make fun of mental health patients, mock them, and act like they don't have time for them. The management would pile on tons and tons of work to where you could not feasibly complete it all in a timely manner, and then complain when you made headway, but not to their liking. The management would purposefully come up to you while you were on the phone speaking with a patient and start singing or screaming in your ear to try and distract you from your job, and then would dance around the office barefoot while singing loudly. I was placed in a role doing duties outside of my job title, yet I was not properly compensated for this. I did not make enough money working at Centra to afford the cost of living in Lynchburg - one of the lowest costs of living in the state. I would not recommend this company to anybody.

Review of HB -Rev Cycle

I worked for three months and I knew it before those 3 months that I would be resigning. I put my resignation in today and tried to work my last two weeks but they do not let you; once it is in that is your last day. Ok cool fine by me.

Management is clueless, nit-picky , crass with a undertone of rudeness and passive aggressive. You will get points if you are late clocking in by 1 or 2 mins due to their global connect vpn not connecting or their outdated ancient systems . That also goes for your lunch clock ins.

Management told me before I started that they cannot keep anyone in their positions in revenue cycle and I absolutely see why. Team leads are secretive and training is sprinkled to you on a need to know basis so you will feel jumbled your whole training period.

Also counted my bereavement days as a “Call Out” then management were passive aggressive about it and kept saying I did not let them know. 

They need an extensive overhaul in that dept.
