Central Insurance

•	Very limited opportunities for advancement. Upward mobility is extremely restricted, especially if you are not part of the company’s primary demographic (which is easy to see through public photos online). Outside of claims—and specifically auto damage claims—advancement is rare for those outside that demographic.
	•	Outdated technology. Many systems are behind industry standards, leading to inefficiency and increased frustration.
	•	Minimal training. The company uses a “sink or swim” approach, providing very little structured training even in roles that require accuracy, consistency, and judgment.
	•	Favoritism in promotions. Some advancement decisions appear to be based on personal or family connections rather than experience or performance.
	•	Understaffed teams. Many departments need more people, resulting in heavier workloads and slower processes.
	•	Weak retirement match. While the pension is strong, the 401(k) match has declined over the years and is no longer competitive with similar companies.

	•	The company is very generous with PTO, with a high starting amount that increases significantly over time, plus additional sick days.
	•	Overall, the work environment is friendly and coworkers are supportive.

Central Insurance is a great place to work overall. They are a bit old-fashioned for InsurTech because they're still treating their employees like people. A typical day involves deep collaboration with a small team, a non-trivial amount of administrative overhead, and overall reasonable but sometimes frustrating expectations. 
Management varies from team to team, I am lucky to have a laissez-faire manager who trusts me to do work and doesn't want to micromanage or power trip. Ymmv.
The worst part of the job is that the business lacks critical domain expertise due to the recent retirements of several long-tenured staff. Engineering has too much influence on (and uncompensated responsibility for) business decisions. This has resulted in arguably irresponsibly ambitious engineering risks, which make the day-to-day experience for an engineering feel constantly in flux.

Management is very hit or miss, can feel like micromanagement or zero support, depending on the supervisor.

Audit expectations are impossible given the work volume.  Most people stay past closing or work from home at night and/or on weekends just to stay afloat.  It's practically impossible to hit one of the higher audit scores.

Company has been growing steadily, but claims hiring has not kept up, which means work volume is insane.  Management will tell you to come in and offer ideas for how to improve the department, but those are generally ignored.  

Salaries are about average, maybe a little below.  Benefits are OK, there is a pension plan and 401K which is great, but unless you're 55-60, it's probably not worth killing yourself for years to qualify.

Advancement is slim to none, unless you're from the Home Office in Van Wert, OH or a member of the CEO's family.

Central needs to do some investigation into supervisors and managers within the company.  Micromanaging good employees, unrealistic high expectations, can't trust the HR business partners to go to when having an issue with management. If you mention the fact that there is always a stipulation when trying to advance within and given poor feedback to be better for the future, that is when they start looking for a reason to fire you. I had high hopes for my future with Central and unfortunately supervisors are not being held accountable due to their lack of skills when managing others. My supervisor was not even trained in billing and had no clue what her team did in the day-to-day work life.  She was incredibly useless.

I have been at Central just under a year and am very happy that I made the move. The company has a great culture and is very inclusive. They have great leaders who help develop you for your current role and future opportunities. Ability to work hybrid. Great benefits: 401k, Profit Sharing, Pension, AMAZING new vacation plan, etc. 

Team building is important to management. Co-workers are helpful. Once monthly casual days are enjoyed by all. Once monthly casual days are earned by those that have not missed work in previous month.

This place is terrible management has no idea what they are doing. Many years of experience and never seen such a terrible place. 1 position had 6 people in the job over 3.5 years. But upper management doesn’t seem to realize it’s not the people it’s the direct managers. 

Spent a few years working here and everything was great, was praised frequently for great work but fired with no warning for a technicality within the companies policy.
For a company that’s really big on integrity it didn’t really reflect with the judgement they made against me.

Central Mutual Insurance offers no room for development and growth, does not treat all employees fairly, and does its best to keep its employees in a state of fear.

An easy to go to job with plenty of opportunity for advancement! The people are great and the culture and atmosphere are one of a kind. Training is thorough and coworkers are very willing to assist. Great company to work for!
