My typical day at work starts with the nursing report in the report room to get a feedback on every patient in the ward. After getting the report we go out on the floor where each staff will be assigned their patients and other things to be done. Sometimes i am assigned to do vitals on all the patients in the ward, check on my assigned patients, interact with  each of them to know their day went and if they have any concerns to talk to me about.  There are different activities that i do with my assigned patients like playing cards, make sure that they are neat and remind them to do their laundries if need be. Document on any bad behavior, also be around them all the time to redirect in case of any acting out.
   I learned that in order to do this type of work i must have patience, sympathy, respect who they are and be a listener.
   I realized that timing is very important so all my work are always done in timely manner.
   I enjoy team work and i have been so blessed with good co-workers because at the end of the shift we make sure that all needs to be done are done including the safety of our patients.
   The hardest part of the job is when there is a difficult patient that we as a team are trying to keep safe either from hurting himself/herself but happens anyways,.
    The most enjoyable part of the job looking back at the end of my shift that all the patients have a good day without any major issues.

Three things about this job.. 1. The work is overall easy, everyday you may be given 4-6 patients on your unit and you will have to verify signs of life per their observation level (the time frame you are required to check for signs of life) their observation level will always be either 15 or 30mins. The pay is decent for the work you do, from time to time you will have patients who may act out and depending on what shift you work and where you're located in the hospital will determine whether or not you have a good response team!! 2. if you're looking for a place where you can work tons of overtime this is the place! its always available they're always looking for someone to cover a shift. the biggest flaw for me when it come to time is they do have a "DOT" system, please be aware of what this system mean and what it stands for so you are not being held to make sure they have enough staff for the oncoming shift. If youre okay with possibly staying over every morning from time to time to work a few hours or maybe an additional 8 hr shift after just completing your original shift totaling 16hrs then this may be the place for you. 3. the most enjoyable part about the job is being able to go home, its a laid back environment and you will always have a job with this place unless you mess that up.  

What is the best part of working at the company?
There is a strong anti white group who cannot stop at trying to make your life miserable. They stay, you leave out of being targeted. Red dot has got to go. Red dot means you have to stay if someone calls out. That happens one or two times a week that you are forced to stay. People only stay if they need the money that badly. Too many things are wrong.  Sadly it used to be a good place to work. The pay is the best part. My good manager finally left without telling us. They have a hard time keeping managers and staff at present. The benefits have changed for the worse.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nurses and techs consistantly attacking nurses. Gossip is spread to the pts. Management address this if you file a report...but the same guilty parties are let go if they are new. But staff who have been there a long time manage to stay.




What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I left after many years because of constant issues and managers are reluctant to fire staff who are there for 20 years. If you do not fit the culture, you will not make it.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
...doing the things that nurses do, hoping no one calls out.

Out of the three state psych hospitals in NC, this was the best. Now, it’s giant dumpster fire. For starters they will bait and switch you all the time, continue to increase your workload without proper compensation, and expect you to work miracles when it comes to a difficult population in a state with few resources. Forget about management advocating for you, or caring about your safety. They don’t even pay the bills to outside hospitals/agencies so you can do your basic job (I.e. Duke, UNC, Affordable Dentures, almost any HIM that charges for sending records). Oh, and they’re stuck in the stone ages, Faxes only. Even though they have encrypted emails. Huge disconnect between upper management and employees, and heaven help you if you dare to disagree. Mics in the cameras in the break rooms and areas patients don’t have access too. 

I've been working for the state for years and the patients are never the problem because they are there for a reason, but some staff is the worst. They are more worried about time and attendance then people actually sleeping on the job and not being able to assist when a situation arise. Some Tech 2 do nothing but continue to tell you what to do rather then helping. People take that title to far as if they are not a CNA. Nurses do absolutely nothing. Back in the day, nurses had to be present while patients where eating to watch out for aspiration risk, now it balls down to watching a computer screen all shift and shopping. We spend most of our time here more then with our own family. Favoritism is at an all time high and disrespect when it comes to people talking in their native language. I hope to soon find another job, but I'll always love my patients no matter how sick they are. 

Im an EC teacher at CRH, about to leave. The patients (adolescents) are great, my coworkers are great. The work demand is easy. Census is low because units have been closed due to critical staff shortage. The adolescent units used to total 24-26 kids and now we are capped at 7. Why is everyone leaving and no one coming? They will tell you covid. Nope. Its complete lack of management support, no oversight, retaliation and gossip, favoritism, lowest pay (supplement 7% and has not increased in 14 years) in the entire region. Your interview will reflect none of your job duties and training is almost nil. EC is extremely difficult and people who don't make it out there come to CRH, but I don't recommend it. Work somewhere where you are not silenced, you are part of a team, you are allowed to collaborate and share, actually contribute to solutions that could heal this dysfunctional and toxic program. I wish I could report more favorable ratings, but I can't :(

CRH administration does an excellent job at making employees feel appreciated. The staff deals with a tough population. Dealing with their ailments is physically(very often missed) and emotionally draining. Co-workers pull together well to aid patients in crisis. Management tries to work with staff to accommodate scheduling, and to give a good balance to work and home. Often the efforts of the administration are overlooked due to the nature of the positions people hold.  The jobs are difficult but its a great place to work.

The hardest part of this job is the idea that you can give great service for years, and someone with no experience can walk in the door and make substantially more money than you ever made. That part makes you feel low.

I enjoyed working there, most of the employees were hard working dedicated employees who were severely under paid.

I unfortunately found management to  be unwilling to look at new methods, and really wanted yes men, not people with new and innovative ideas.  It was most unfortunate that the employees I had did not know much about the HVAC system at the new hospital campus even though it had been operational for eight years and they had been there for the entire time.  This was not their fault as there was no training budget and operation was run in a manner that only one person knew the system and he left to go to work at the federal prison the following week after I took over the Team.  I tried to change this by sharing knowledge with  each member of the team but was rebuked in in this effort.

CRH is an interesting place to work . The  work environment is conducive were team work is an important aspect in the delivery of quality health care. The environment is ideal for learning. The unit education officer and preceptors are vey helpful as they are always around to help  new employees  learn  and master skills important on the job.
I have learned a great deal especially the skill of therapeutic dialogue with patients and family members; the ability to remain composed in crisis situation while painstakingly working to find solution. But it can be a difficult job some times when  staff is assaulted by patient resulting in injury to that staff.  But as with all life situations, the enjoyable part of the job is when a potential physical aggression is defused verbally without injury to either staff or other patient.

I enjoy working at this state psychiatric hospital. My coworkers are terrific and supervisors are very supportive of their social workers. You probably make about $10-$20,000 less than private companies but that’s generally the case with state government jobs. It’s not particularly bureaucratic. The patients are treated really well and received excellent treatment. It is a new building and it’s really beautiful. For new hires, you can get free supervision. There are lots of opportunities for free continuing education hours free.Unfortunately, the state has eliminated retirement health insurance for new hires.
