Overall, Children's was definitely a dream job. My department had a good mix of opportunity in inpatient and outpatient fields as well as PRN work in the ER. A few pitfalls I didn't like were that our schedules were made 6+ months out. Our team lead was great at being flexible and helping cover shifts, but it would make it hard if you are a working parent and something urgent comes up or if you are the type of person that needs to have lots of flexibility for traveling. We basically had to schedule our vacations out 6+ months in advance which can be hard especially if you are trying to get flight deals. On the contrary, I had a wonderful and supportive team and supervising physician. The physicians are hired through UTSW and at times it felt like they could get away with a lot (including how they treated some of the ancillary staff) without any reprimanding. There are good and bad eggs in any field, though. I haven't found a workplace more supportive of APPs (advanced practice providers) and more structured than Children's. I know that other facilities would do well if they modeled their work flow around children's. The PA's and NPs have (for the most part) as much autonomy as they would like and as much support as they'd like. The benefits are one of the best parts of this job. The starting pay is higher than other facilities in the area. The raises are based on PEAC goals you create each year (one from the hospital and one for yourself). This pushes you to go above just the demands of your job. Speaking of - I had heard many physicians tell us that we had to work to "show the hospital our worth" many times because we can't bill inpatient and thus cannot receive RVU's. Toward the end of my work here, I felt like we were constantly being given task after task, increasing patient loads, taking on more complex patients and no matter what you are billing it never seems to be enough. There is a large turnover of medical assistants, nurses, and schedulers (ASRs) here but I think that's every department here. I've been told that they get paid more elsewhere so most of them leave. I would definitely come back and work here in the future. Overall, this is a great place to work and every work place will have its few flaws.

I've worked at Children's for 5 years now and have worked in both ambulatory and inpatient settings.  The thing I love most about children's is the co-workers. From day one they treat you like family and are the best at what they do so you gain knowledge from them. They are always celebrating birthdays, baby showers, and other special occasions. It's a joy to work with them every day.  Unfortunately, I can't say the same for management. The experiences that I have had are sub-par.  Some managers have no background in healthcare so they don't understand the importance of following the nurse practice act and the regulations for CMS.  Not all management are like this (I'm grateful to have had a good manager) but there are a few that seem to be more prideful and unwilling to listen to employee's concerns and have their own management style that doesn't support "The Children's Way".  Upper management is rarely seen and seem disconnected from what's really happening "in the trenches".  I will say that they follow the trends in healthcare closely and move in the direction that sustains the organization.  The pay is good and they provide annual raises.  It is difficult to move up and most staff don't want to because there are too many upper management to answer to. Now for the fun stuff.  There is a Starbucks coffee shop on-site and they make all the favorites.  Ask them to make up a "secret" recipe and they will give you a list of what they can make.  I love butter beer personally.  We also have a great child-life group that keeps us well-stocked with toys, blankets, pillowcases, and give-aways for the patients.  Our RT department is terrific as well as our lab and even the hard sticks are easy for them.  We have food trucks come on occasion and the cafeteria staff are really nice although I don't really like the food but that's just personal preference.  The gift shop is awesome and runs 75% off deals on items that they need to move out to make room for new inventory.  All-in-all, it's a pretty good place to work.

I started out here doing residency as a new Graduate RN. The classes and sim labs were helpful, and some repetitive of nursing school. As a resident, you are still learning what works for you and what doesn't. Our training of 6 months on nights, 6 months on days were cut in half to 3 and 3 due to shortages. I ended orientation not feeling as competent as others. My first shift on my own was on a unit we did not train on, and it felt unsafe. We were also all placed on night shift due to shortages and scheduling had to be planned out about 3 months in advance. PTO was almost always denied.

Also, I was warned by others about management and personal information being spread to others. I saw this happening with my peers, where their personal information was discussed between others outside of management, and it has made others uncomfortable.

When I placed my two weeks, I got phone calls right away saying that they can make the transfer work since I was still under residency. After doing a couple Shadow shifts and deciding to transfer to clinic instead of inpatient bedside, I was then told I would have to interview for the position and the process wouldn't start until 2 to 3 months ahead. 


It seemed like there were a lot of empty promises, and after I left I got a lot of messages from my peers who were still in residency asking how I did it. In addition, I asked management for references because they were so nice up front and I received no response from anyone and that's how I ended working there after seeing I was taken off the schedule completely with no communication. 

If you really love bedside nursing, this is an experience for you to stick through until you find your soft spot. If not, it's not worth your mental health and risking your work life balance.

I have been working for children's for about 2years, at first it felt like I had finally gotten the job I always wanted but after 2 weeks I realized I had made a terrible mistake.
O my where do I start from? Is it management or HR, they are a bunch of narcissist, unqualified and  incompetent people.
The favoritism and nepotism going on here needs to be investigated.
this place is toxic , filled with gossip and unprofessional people. HR knows about it and sweeps it under the rug, if you tried talking to HR she would avoid you until you get feed-up.

I work on the desk and management has their favorites, they allow people they like to get away with anything.
I know someone who works 8-10hrs shift like everyone else and takes 9 calls vs the average call of 30 and management does nothing.

management is rude and passive aggressive.
for a hospital their insurance is very expensive and poor.
There is no room to grow, if you have a relative working here in a higher position that there is your ticket.
People here are rude.

I would not recommend here to any one who actually went to college, it is not worth it- not a good experience except you like being in a mess.
No advancement neither would you learn anything you can use outside the organization.
they would present to you a beautiful picture during the interview but as soon as you get it , you would find out it's all a lie.

Too many managers feeling too comfortable,

I would take report from the previous shift supervisor.  I made assignments for all Respiratory Therapy staff. I would begin rounds to all patient care areas flagging orders soon to expire. I would communicate with physicians and nursing personnel concerning patients and their respiratory status. I rounded with ICU lead therapist to assure staffing was adequate.  I checked with all Respiratory Therapy staff to see if there were any problems with timely delivery of respiratory treatments to all patients on respiratory care. I assisted any therapist with situations preventing delivery of care to patients. I made my way back to my office to check on status of employee evaluations, schedule request, BLS status, and any counseling concerns with employees. I kept my direct supervisor (assistant director) informed of overall status of the days activities, any employee concerns, etc. When necessary, I had the authority to terminate an employee, but not hire employees. I reviewed employee files on a regular basis. I did scheduling for the day shift. I gave in-services to all personnel. I had to maintain BLS instructor certificate and PALS certification. I had to provide BLS instruction to all appropriate personnel. I prepared end of shift report for oncoming shift supervisor.

Performed the full range of hospital pharmacy duties including a formula lab position since the hospital is a children's hospital. 

A typical day is primarily filling cart-fill and first-doses for new admits, both sterile and non-sterile doses. Other necessary duties per shift involved re-stocking remote omnicells, making necessary formula for feeding patients, and restocking inventory for next shift. Secondary duties involve compounding and repackaging as business needs.

The work culture encourages growth. I began working in central fill and quickly progressed through three different departments, learning more with each successive move.

The most difficult part of the job came from the high-paced growth of the area which out-paced the labor on my shift. During the highest peak, in winter, there were times where we were stretched a bit too thin for our volume. As the same season approaches, the company is reviewing how it can better handle this higher volume through adding more positions.

The best part of the job has been the high satisfaction for helping sick children. Combine that with the ability to use a wide range of skills to accomplish this and an independence to use those skills as needed- what better job could you find.

The flexibility is great and you're able to pick up bonus shifts, however, the other staff can be difficult to work with at times. The management is there to run a business so there should be no hiding that fact. There has been an awful staffing shortage for the past several years and there has not been very much done to solve the problem. The solution is to offer more bonus shifts which are nice, however, most of those bonus shifts will be sitting with a total care patient, aggressive child, medically nonadherent patient, suicidal ideations, or homicidal ideations. While they have implemented a new policy of sitters having to switch out of the sitting rooms every 6 hours, it can be almost guaranteed that you will be put back into a different sitting room.  As a tech you can expect a maximum amount of patient you will be forced to take is 16, generally 2 patients per nurse, however, when the nurses are short staffed the techs have to help out more with feedings, vitals for their other patients, walking the patients or their families to another part of the hospital, and running errands such as pharmacy pick up for the nurses. Overall I enjoyed my time there, but the atmosphere that some of the clickish nurses put off was not welcoming of new  comers.

I really enjoyed working at Children's because of the superior doctors, nursing staff, and overall work environment.  Working with children is amazingly satisfying.  Giving back to the sweet children by singing to them, loving them, and giving high quality respiratory care to them was continually touching my soul and filling me up with pride to be a part of such a wonderful hospital.
I learned so much there, asthma protocols, family teaching, the different diseases and syndromes that afflict children, babies, and young adults and how to deal with them.  Encouraging families that had chronic/acute diseases, helping them to deal with those through education and caring.
Children's employs high quality therapists who are interested in giving the best of care and education to patients and families.  They work well as "team" members to the overall care of the children.
The hardest part of working there was to see some of the children die from their diseases after getting so emotionally attached to them.  
The most enjoyable part was simply the privilege of working with some of God's most special children.

This department is on its way to imploding. You will be hired to nights and told that you can go to dayshift quickly. This is a huge lie and you will be on night shift for a long time before having the opportunity to switch. It is impossible to get PTO. You must schedule a year in advance and as soon as it opens to schedule people will be on at midnight to take all the days. It is easier to call in for vacation except you are only allowed to miss 5 days in a year. If you miss more then you are counseled and must come up with a plan to improve. If you continue to miss work then you are terminated. The managers and department head are worthless. We were told by the department head that if we got lunch one day then we were not working hard enough. The managers will not stand up for you and will constantly ask you to go against policy if it is what the doctors want. We are constantly made promises of improvement yet nothing happens. The insurance is terrible. The only benefit of working here is that the salary is slightly better than most places. It is not just respiratory that has problems because the nurses constantly complain as well. I would stay away from childrens at all costs.

I would usually start my day by making sure the clinic was ready for the day.  For example I made sure the computers were turned on, the rooms were clean and stocked with supplies for the day.  I would print out the patient schedule and made the room schedule for all the staff.  I helped pull back patients took vitals, entered data into paperless charting system called Epic. I learned a lot of things one of those things was how to change a feeding tube, and how to interpret for the doctors in Spanish and vice-versa.  The management was okay I had three different managers while I worked at Children's.  One in particular was very hands on with the staff, and that was one thing that I loved about her.  The hardest thing about my job was when we had more than 80 patients in our schedule.  We had to figure out a way to get all our patient in and out of a room in less than 30  minutes.  I have to say then most enjoyable part of my job was being able to help the children and their parents out some of the patients that were seen by our clinic were very ill and so little.  I felt like my life  had a purpose very day when I woke up.
