Compensation for positions is average; however, no job growth or opportunities to move up. If you work here, you really have to be here for the kids. In my case, I don't get to work with the kids, so I really have no good things to say.

Most of the time, this is an OK place to work, but it really depends on the people you work with and the type of environment you work in
Everything written below only pertains to my department. I cannot speak for other departments. Upon consulting with an industrial-organizational psychologist regarding the issues going on with my workplace, I was told, "That is very poor management. I've never heard of anything like this". 

My department is stuck in the caveman era. Because management has been in place for the past eon, they are reluctant to change and keep up with the times. The technology in my department is close to nil- the most advanced piece of equipment we have on the admin side is a half-broken fax machine that nobody knows how to operate. 

The Children's network is old and being run on outdated servers, which is 'down' about 20% of the time. I would estimate that the servers being used to run these systems are probably over a decade old. The internet browser that gets launched when you launch an application is from the very first version of Windows XP, which was invented about 6 years after the advent of the internet. 
They are currently undergoing an electronic system update, which nearly made me cry when I heard that it would enable staff members to be alerted whenever a patient arrives or a patient chart was ready.

The admin staff is a loud, belligerent, and angry bunch of people that sing, argue, and make inappropriate jokes in front of patients. They are unqualified and unfit for their jobs as they are most of the time, unable to adapt to new technologies, and will be opposed to any changes that are made to improve quality (i.e. if it means typing several more words). For example, the staff informed me that my expectations were too high when I showed them how to right click on the mouse. You will also face issues that don't belong in the workplace, like debates about racism or religion. 

At Children's, I was not valued as an individual. Opportunities for growth were constantly taken away from me or prevented from happening because of the belief that it would cause conflicts with other staff members (although these issues were personal in the first place).

My recommendation is to avoid this place at all costs, especially if you are not working directly with the patients.

A typical day for me would be opening clinic up, making sure rooms were stocked and ready for patients. When patients start to arrive I would room patients promptly and collect all necessary information. It would also include making sure the physician had everything they needed to manage their patient load. I have learned so much over the years, including but not limited to: pediatric orthopaeditic injuries and chronic illnesses,  wound care, wound VAC applications, assessing patients for all areas of their health, not necessarily for the reason being seen, setting up sterile procedure trays, assisting physicians with minor office procedures, applying short arm and leg casts, and observing the physicians to meet their next need(s).
Management, there are good ones and there are those that need to be open to learning additional management skills. For me, a manager needs to be strong and supportive in ways that I can learn from my mistakes and feel like they stand behind me and recognize my achievements.
Co-workers are somewhat similar to management. Co-workers need to be team players, supportive, be approachable when help is needed and be approachable and open minded if you have a concern you would like to talk with them about.
The most difficult part of the job for me is when co-workers do not work as a team, are not working at their full capacity, are negative about the job and employer/manager, talk about others behind their backs and deescalate situations that may have been preventable. 
The most enjoyable part of my job is working with the patients and their families. It gives me such a good feeling when they express their gratefulness for how they were treated and are happy when they leave.

HSCSN is a difficult place to work to say the least.  Management has it's favorites....very "clicky" environment.  You will work in an office and you will be responsible for going out into the field to see patients and families in their homes....in terrible parts of the city...by yourself (unless you find a co worker eager to partner with you for the day).  No opportunities for advancement unless you are the "favorite" on your team.  You WILL care for upwards of 100+ patients/families.  You will be cursed out  by parents....you will get little support from upper managment...and very little training that is helpful.  Orientation is relatively non existent althought they pretend to have an orientation program.
The pluses are this...if you have a pediatric background...and you NEED a job right now...they do pay well and it is a job while you keep searching.  That would be my advice...work so that you have the title of "care manager" on your resume and make a decent salary...that's how they keep employees...not by treating them well but by paying them well.  If you do decide to take a job with them, definitely ask for the salary you deserve....you can bargain for that and you will probably get it...they are desperate for new people.  The other issue is that they do not like LPN's...or RN's for that matter...the whole focus has changed and they want social workers now...Upper management will make it difficult for those they do not like....stay on their "good side".  Telework is no longer an option...BE CAREFUL....and keep good records and document everything...and keep copies of your emails...you will need them.  You will get through being an employee there...but do not ever get "comfortable" and always keep your resume up to date.

I will start by saying I totally agree with the previous RN poster. I also worked as a case manager for this establishment. And while I loved most of my coworkers, and taking care of my members, management, was a tad difficult to deal with at times. The expectations for face to face visits were unrealistic, you are frequently expected to make multiple visits to members in very unsafe areas alone and often those members wouldn't even show up and even when you coordinate care for them they were non compliant. And yes you do frequently get treated inappropriately by members, as in cursed out. But that didn't bother me too much, as once you get through to the members and establish rapport with some, it became easier especially because your members never get closed out they age out. So you get to know them better as time progresses. Telework was still an option in my time which made it easier for me to stay as long as I did. However, I didn't feel the salary was that competitive. And yes the case loads WERE at least 90-100 or even more. I am talking for RNs predominantly high acuity cases. The only satisfaction was the joy I got when I was able to accomplish goals for my members and watch them go from being non compliant to being compliant and taking autonomy in their care. Also, I acquired loads of experience at this position which set me up to be as successful as I am now. So I am giving HSCSN a 3 star rating.

The following is a typical day of work in my position supporting the VP, Chief Medical Information Officer at CNMC.
I managed the eCW and practice billing, accounting/collection efforts for the Children’s IQ Network).
I also:
Processed utilizing computer technology, the day-to-day clerical, financial, record keeping or processing duties of a particular area or function.
Researched and assisted in preparing reports.
Made appointments and maintain Outlook calendar based on specific instructions, arrange meetings, schedule rooms and equipment.
Coordinated interviews for job candidates
Processed check requests, prepare travel expense forms, and reimbursements
Prepared spreadsheets, collect and submit statistical data
Made travel arrangements, i.e. car rental, airfare, hotels
Used the Kronos system, for timekeeping and the processing of leave requests for the staff.
Prepared AMEX reconciliation monthly, used by VP and other staff members.
I learned quite a lot about the management of practice billing. I worked side by side with the VP and there were just the two of us in his office, his other reports were based in other locations. The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to prioritize on my own and check off tasks to be completed using my judgement skills. The hardest part of the job was calling clients to collect overdue payments.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The entire job was great! Always a few bad apples on every job! But a great place to work as long as you do your job! Me myself I like bed it! Majority of the people there are awesome! Lots of on hand experience 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Supervisors not recognizing the job you do! Until they find out from the nurses you work for! They tell the supervisors of your dedication and work ethic. No need to lie about what you do! Someone is always watching and that's a good thing for me!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
All types of cultures almost every kind you can think of! Once you get to really know them it's an awesome place to work.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Mostly busy always something to get accomplished unless you just a person that ducks work! Then there's no reason to apply there. Teaches you how to humble yourself with Care and compassion. Not a place to work for just to get a check! Way more to the responsibility than that! It actually all depends on where your heart is! If it's not there at Children's National Medical Center Find another place to work that suits your character now that's my truth like it or not!!!

I was very fortunate to work group of dedicated professionals who understood the importance of team cohesion and mutual support. Pediatric health comes with a number of its own unique challenges that only by working together and supporting one another were we able to succeed.

A typical day started with schedule review of all the physician and medical professionals whom the administrative team supported. Coordinating the daily, weekly, monthly and fiscal year projects in accordance with the requested deadlines.

Working at Children's and in the Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Division help me grow both professionally and personally. Shaping my work ethics and personal character. 

Management team was supportive and accountable. I considered my immediate supervisor not only a mentor but a friend. Among that division many of us considered one another friends, brought together by a mutual dedication pediatric healthcare and bound by true comradeship. 

The hardest part of the job was keeping perspective on the big picture when a child's health and a family's well-being was involved. The most enjoyable part was knowing you were part of a team dedicated to sending children home healthier and happier

What is the best part of working at the company?
There is nothing great about working at this company. What was experienced was low wages, low-rate increases, excessive amounts of work that does not match your pay, favoritism and abuse of power and poor management. You will not get paid your worth for the amount of work you do. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of this job was excessive amounts of work. They would pile on responsibilities, and doctors who needed support without proper training, proper support and proper compensation. There was an immense amount of poor management within CCBD.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment was very tense, stressful and toxic. Again, I cannot stress how a team had the same complaints about management within CCBD. If you would like to maintain your mental and physical health, do not work there. You are stressed for multiple reasons. Like trying to catch a shuttle bus because you cannot park onsite.  Add in the favoritism that is bestowed upon non degreed, unqualified staff members. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day was being overworked and under paid.

I truly believe the mission of HSCSN is great. To help improve healthcare for DC residents is important to the success of our community. However, making home visits in unsafe environments and managers not caring about your well-being make the job tougher. Senior management has unrealistic goals for workers. They never go out in the field and experience the day of an outreach worker. WHATEVER you do, DO NOT work for Mr.Doggette! He will take advantage of you, work you like a dog, and treat you like a volunteer. He even fires employees on NEW YEARS EVE! 

I learned a lot about the community I live in. Improving healthcare and educating DC families is rewarding. Unfortunately, the pay does not equal out. If you want to just have a job until you find something better, do it. If not, don't even waste your time. This organization is cheap to its workers. You have to use your own car to go all over DC and it takes 3 weeks before you get reimbursed for your gas. They want you to do everything for free, but give members $15 gift cards to Murrays & Safeway. I know the DC families need our support, yet this organization has a lot of restructuring to do. to retain their current employees.
