I can’t really recommend this place for Biomed. I firmly believe upper management just sees the department as a space on a spreadsheet that spends money and that’s it. Apparently at COA, it’s acceptable for a BMET to cover two different positions (Servicing 15 departments) with no extra incentive, you won’t get a raise or a promotion or even a pat on the back. It’s okay for technicians to have to come in at 3am to get their PMs done because COA doesn’t want to hire anymore technicians. You don’t get any recognition for doing a great job; the biomed department gets treated like they don’t exist until something major breaks or they need to be kicked out of their parking or banned from working holidays because they don’t want us getting holiday pay. The people you work with, and interact with on a daily basis, are some of the best people you will ever meet and is honestly the only redeeming quality of this place. If you need experience and this is the only place then go for it until something better pops up. They pay you below the market rate for Biomed, you’ll do more work than you would in another hospital, and you won’t get anything out of it in the end. I hope you’ll find this review helpful because I know whoever is supposed to deal with these won’t even bother with mine. 

Working at the children’s hospital has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The environment is compassionate, collaborative, and focused on providing the highest quality care to pediatric patients and their families. The multidisciplinary team works seamlessly together, creating a supportive atmosphere where every staff member’s role is valued. Leadership is approachable and consistently encourages professional growth, ongoing education, and teamwork.

What stands out most is the hospital’s dedication to patient-centered care. From physicians and nurses to support staff, everyone shares the same goal of ensuring that children receive not only excellent medical treatment but also emotional support during difficult times. The facility is well organized, and the resources available allow staff to perform their duties effectively and confidently.

Overall, my time at the children’s hospital has strengthened my clinical skills and deepened my passion for pediatric care. It is truly a place where compassion, professionalism, and teamwork come together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and families.

Troubleshoot Cochlear Implant and Hearing Aid repair problems and also decide the right equipment and strategy is needed to repair the implant equipment.  Request, process, and ensure closure on all Cochlear Implant return authorizations.  Check in and prepare all new Cochlear Implant Systems by the day of initial stimulation.  Obtain and authorize all purchase orders that are made through the center. Also process all orders and receipts of ear-molds, hearing aids, and hearing aid repairs.  Responsible for accepting and handling all patient phone calls about problems, sales, etc.  Collect and process all financial billing for the weekly sales made by the Clinic.  Compile meeting minutes for the weekly meeting.  Assist Audiologist during audio logic evaluations of the young and difficult.  Maintain loaner and consignment hearing aid stock every 3 months and also provide the staff with an updated database.  Perform hearing instrument checks and verify proper function of every loaner aid returned. Also independently return stock or send them for repair.

On the unit I am employed we strive in an environment that is focused on team work and team collaboration to take care of critically ill patients. A typical day at work consists of 2-3 patents. One will be more critical than the others. One may discharge home or transfer to an acute care floor and the other will more likely stay on the unit for increased care. We do self scheduling which allows for us to work around our out of work life. The hardest part of my job is once I am off the clock. I will think about my patient's, their family situations, and it can become difficult to block it from my mind when at home. Even more so after a stressful day. The most enjoyable part of my job is seeing pediatric patient's get better. Children rebound very quickly. I have personally seen miracles and am so thankful for every experience and lesson I have learned while working here. I have learned time management, delegation, prioritization, and organization during my time as an RN on SCU.

As a program coordinator, my job functions were varied and often ad hoc. Every day was different and enjoyable due to that.

I learned several systems including what is called the Oracle system for ordering supplies and paying vendors including in-house payments between UAB and Children's; purchase order requisitions, etc. Also learned the ERAS program, which is the Resident Application System that served our Fellows, doctors who applied to our program for fellowships (sub-specialty residencies). In addition, I learned the new MedHub  system that served our fellowship.  My co-workers were the best part of the position because they were friendly, helpful, and very pleasant to work with. The difficult parts of the job included the dependencies on faculty who often did not respond to e-mails, or who were difficult to commit or with which to communicate.

I worked here for a long time and was very young when I started. I learned everything I needed to learn to move on to bigger and better things. Children's offers great benefits and job security. If you are looking for that, than by all means apply! With that being said, that is why the pay is not so great. I believe this company uses the excuse of "great benefits" to excuse the fact that they don't pay well. 

Great place to be around different professions and soak up what you need to get ahead. Also, they offer tuition reimbursement, childcare, discounts, and other things. After you milk them for what you need, move on! I had bad experiences during my milking process and will never go back there if I had the choice. 

This place is all about customer service, which I can appreciate and fully understand considering they work with children, but they can take it to the extreme and seek the customers opinion/word over yours. NO BACK-UP on your end;  and I was hardly ever in any bad situations. Remember that!

Typical days are always going to be spontaneous. You never know what may take place on any day. What you'll learn is the importance of a smile. Smiling goes a long way here and honestly that's what patients look forward to; for you to be nice to them and make them feel safe. Management is awesome. Don't look forward to seeing them too much. Unless you're always late, rude to patients/families, need to be informed of something important, or meetings.The employees here are all different in their own way. There is an enormous diversity of people that you'll encounter here. I don't think that any of the work here is difficult. It's all about what you put into it. The most exciting part of working here is seeing the patients faces. Seeing them smile, hearing the excitement in their voices as they say their goodbyes for the day or watching them color or play with the other patients in the lobby. I can honestly say that I've grown so much here and I also appreciate being able to see my patients/families each and everyday.

Cared for 2-3 critically ill neonates with a wide range of medical issues ranging from surgical intervention to system failure. 48 bed unit that allowed me to care for both patient and family. Skills included trach/respiratory care; Central and Peripheral access; nutrition via oral, gastric tube, IV. The culture is somewhat different with the age of nurses being much younger and work ethics being so different from a seasoned nurse. Of the time I worked at COA, I enjoyed the new and exciting ideas, inventions, and ways of caring for such critical infants and the success rates for those patients that once would have been comfort care only. I enjoyed getting to interact with families and with other cultures.

I enjoy it for the most part. Some weeks are better than others and it can feel like management is trying to run game on you. Which Im never really sure if they are or not.

Its nice to be able to spend time with the families and children.

My floor is good usually! The culture is fine and sometimes it takes effort to really get along with some personalities. I do feel like sometimes management just lets anything go until it impacts them.

Hardest part really can be navigating managements many issues with you on any given day.

Benefits are kind of bad? I pay for the best ones I can but still I can only get generics and sometimes outright denied.

I loved working at COA.  Working there will really make you appreciate your own healthy children and family members.  There is always something exciting going on in the hospital and lots of activities for the kids.  You get to dress up for almost all holidays and needless to say you get to see tons of beautiful babies all day.  It really is great and Children's pushes that culture of happiness and compassion from the people who empty the trash, to the people who serve your food, register you, treat you and so on.  I loved being a part of that.  I have heard many times that it is difficult to get hired there, but once you are it is also very difficult to get fired.  COA is very tolerant of nearly everything except mistreatment of the patients.  The CEO is also pretty a pretty AWESome guy.  Hope this helps.  Good luck!
