Pros: Home office staff in Indy are amazing, kind, supportive. Benefits are great: PTO, paid holidays, insurance, small bonuses when possible. Choices supported Lake Charles staff after the hurricanes of 2020. They also provided EAP counseling for staff. 
Cons: I left a counseling career to join Choices as a supervisor.  I was happy in the role of supervisor during the first couple years at Choices because I believe in the “values” of wraparound (the model that staff has to facilitate with families we work with). I was idealistic that the goals could be met, but it was a constant struggle to balance requirements like conducting coaching, supervision, attending frequent clinical staffings internally and externally (too much was repetitive), documentation, review and approval of plans of care to keep families enrolled through Magellan, and always modeling the values of wraparound amongst ourselves in the office. Unfortunately, I was constantly doing other people’s work, responding to inquiries, calls, and emails from stakeholders and local providers. We have had no clinical manager for 2 years and the company hasn’t been actively recruiting for the position since supervisors were helping to cover those job duties, in addition to our own required duties.  I was trying to train new wrap facilitators who don’t always have a background in social services, so the “values” of wraparound seemed too clinical for them and they struggled to facilitate the wraparound process with families, leading to most resorting to case management only. There is pressure to fit the work into a specific mold but it just isn’t working in Region 6. I often felt burned out, stressed out, bullied by upper management, and so anxious that my health suffered, especially after the hurricanes when I had to help get the office staff back up and running while everyone was traumatized. After a certain amount of disrespect that was hurtful, I started being assertive and standing up for myself appropriately, but nothing got better in how I was treated by my superiors. I learned a lot in my job as supervisor. Most importantly I learned that I want to return to being a therapist only. 

The work itself is meaningful, and the clients and families served are deserving of quality care. Many frontline staff demonstrate dedication and compassion despite difficult circumstances, and those employees are the strongest asset this organization has.

Unfortunately, in my experience, the effectiveness of that good work is significantly hindered by management practices that feel disorganized, reactive rather than proactive, and disconnected from the realities of field staff. Expectations were not always clearly defined, and guidance on handling challenging situations could be inconsistent or delayed. This created an environment where employees were often left to navigate complex responsibilities without the level of support or direction typically expected in a clinical setting.

There also appeared to be a gap between leadership decisions and day-to-day operational needs. Processes that impact safety, scheduling, and workload would benefit from more thoughtful planning and clearer communication. At times, concerns raised by staff did not seem to translate into meaningful changes, which affected morale and contributed to turnover.

Compensation and benefits did not feel aligned with the level of responsibility, travel, and emotional demand required for the role. For a position that asks a great deal of employees, stronger infrastructure, clearer policies, and more visible leadership engagement would make a significant difference in retention and job satisfaction.

This role may provide valuable early-career experience, but individuals seeking a well-supported, highly organized environment may want to ask detailed questions about supervision, communication, and expectations before accepting a position.

Choices does a great job of helping you maintain a good work/life balance. They also employ "the whole person" and sometimes will empathize with things that are going on in your life. PTO is decent and there are no questions asked when you need to use it. No one ever made me feel guilty for using the time off I earned. Many of my coworkers formed friendships from working together because the overall vibe is fairly chill. 

This is a great company if you're pursuing a license or masters degree, but if you're looking for a career where you can grow within a company you won't find it here unless you're a rare outlier. Choices sort of takes the approach of using people up and replacing them when they inevitably burn out and quit. There will be no effort to keep you and hard work is only rewarded with more work. I have seen many good people leave due to Choices not demonstrating value or respect for it's employees. People get away with too much here because the company is in constant need of warm bodies. The families we were supposed to be helping pay the price for hiring poor candidates which created extra work for me when they got fired or quit. It's luck of the draw on whether you get a supervisor that knows anything. I don't want to be mean, but my supervisor was awful and knew less about what we were doing than I did. 



I loved the clients I served as a therapist. I served women that have mental health and addiction challenges. The Kaleidoscope Recovery Center program is over a year old. The challenge for me was not having direct  training at the beginning when hired instead of 2+ months after starting in my role. When I started I was the only therapist for about 5 weeks so there was an urgency to get me in the field providing therapy to clients. I loved my colleagues on my team. The workload is time sensitive to be in compliance with DMHA and DCS when audited. My clients spoke very highly of me and I do miss being their therapist. I would have wanted to get invited to attend trainings that would support me being a better therapist especially in serving clients battling addiction. There needs to be at least 2-3 therapists to provide quality therapy and complete all the necessary paperwork for each client. I wish I saw my supervisor in-person more than just the one time every 6+ weeks with especially being a fairly new program and being a newly hired employee. I very much so valued the supervision time spent weekly for an hour. I did love the flexibility but it came with a cost of having to work late nights to meet the time sensitive deadlines. I absolutely loved IOP as a group facilitator. 

Most co-workers are great at supporting each other and some of the direct supervisors are okay, but upper management has allowed some very poor clinical-side supervisors to continue to exist in their positions unchecked, leading to poor morale and high turnover overall. Case loads are increasing due to the turnover and rather than stopping or waitlisting incoming referrals, the company is getting contract waivers to increase individual worker caseload limits. There is also zero work/life balance despite company-speak claiming importance for this - care coordinators are not allowed to be unavailable or without their phones, even after hours or on weekends, unless they have a co-worker covering for them - in other words, you are on call 24/7/365, except when you have scheduled PTO with a co-worker covering. The company is working on undoing systemic racism, which is great, but is perpetuating disability discrimination and classism, and some workers from non-mainstream religions feel they have to hide their faith because some members of management are so open about their mainstream religious beliefs. The initial feel of inclusion when a person first starts at the company wears off quickly.

Even though my coworkers were nice, the company is terrible. Corporate does not compensate their staff for the work they do. We worked over 50 hours per week, and, although comp time was promised, we never got to take it. Plus, if you actually take comp time or work just 40 hours, your work never gets done. The company does not care for its employees as evidenced by the poor salary. They also do not live up to their mission and vision. Families suffer because workers had 15 instead of 10 cases. Corporate promises went unfulfilled, and I felt like a mule being led by a carrot on a string. Supervisors were inexperienced at management, and their lack of management experience chased me away. Also, if you do not buy in to the wraparound social work process, which does not hold clients accountable for anything they do, then I strongly suggest steering away from this company. They promise the moon and the stars, but they could not even deliver dirt.

Choices in Mississippi has grown significantly in the last two years. While there are growing pains, I have seen Choices remain committed to providing great services to families and pour into their workers to give them the support they need to do the best job they can. I have been promoted within Choices and I feel my hard work was appreciated. I do not think our health insurance is very good. At times this work can be very stressful, but I do feel I have support when needed to make hard decisions. Great leadership team! 

A typical day at work can consist of many different things. Each day is different and based on the availability of your clients/families. I learned a different way of getting families involved in change. Management varies, there are multiple supervisors. Each supervisor has a different way of doing things and their personalities vary. You are assigned and stuck with whomever you get, no matter what. Management is not willing to change things to make relationships work. They are not opposed to micromanaging either. The other employees is the best part of the job. They come from all walks of life and create a diverse group of people. They work as a family and become close-knit in their journey to improve others quality of life.

This company does not offer raises, you will work more than 40 hours per week although they say u won’t. Be prepared to work after working hours and working on your days off without pay. The company will lie to get you in the door by offering benefits they no longer have.  There is little to no training on how to do the work however you remain in several trainings unrelated to the actual work you are doing. The amount of clients on your caseload is large, you are required to do home visits every week which will attribute to the wear and tear on your vehicle from traveling throughout the various parishes.

I work as an outpatient manager and have recently made six months. I can truly say that I have never been so heard and understood at another job. I am able to communicate so efficiently with own supervisor that there are never any concerns. The therapist that I supervise have grown so much and I am insanely proud of my own team. I also have been able to see my fellow supervisors work hard to maintain and help this company grow. There is still growth to be had and it is occurring, but I am so happy being here and being able to lead the team I lead!
