All depends on what project you work on some are a little bit more straightforward like outreach while others have a much higher paperwork load and client visitation expectation in case managing. If you are a case manager II you can have as many as 60 to 80 housed clients and maybe two staff, if you’re lucky, sometimes you’re alone; when in reality you’re supposed to have 6 to 8 staff, which the project is paid to be executing, but staff retention makes this almost never possible. In the two plus years I worked there, there was only I think a three month period of time when we actually had full staff. This makes things extremely difficult when other things come into factor like clients getting awarded section 8 vouchers, so now you have your active clients around 50 to 60 and now you have 30 coming back for the vouchers and they expect you to take care of everyone; new clients, active clients, old clients… it doesn’t matter to them you will be expected to manage everything. An example I can think of is we had 12 clients that were new and all needed to be moved and we were given one days notice and there was only two staff to complete this. Lastly, expect to get sick all the time from the clientele you work with, especially Covid, as I’ve had it four different times working there and that’s even with masks.



Working as a homeless outreach specialist has been deeply rewarding. Our team engages directly with individuals experiencing homelessness, connecting them with housing resources, healthcare, and social services. I've gained invaluable experience understanding the complex factors that contribute to homelessness and how to effectively support people in crisis.

The field work is dynamic - each day brings unique challenges and opportunities to make a real difference. Whether we're conducting street outreach, helping clients navigate paperwork for housing applications, or coordinating with other service providers, there's always something new to learn.

The role requires strong communication skills, patience, and empathy. It's gratifying to build trust with clients over time and see them make progress toward stability. Our team collaborates well, sharing resources and supporting each other through challenging situations.

This position has taught me so much about resilience, systemic inequities, and the importance of trauma-informed care. While the work can be emotionally demanding at times, the opportunity to help people rebuild their lives makes it worthwhile. I've developed valuable skills in crisis intervention, case management, and community outreach that will serve me well in my career.

Management?
THERE IS NO LEADER HERE. Management gets paid to hide and avoid anyone who needs help. Management is too focused on the lint in the dryers rather than focused on the people who need food.  Cabinets are empty and staff has to lie to people about inventory because Management is stingy. 

The hardest part of the job?
The hardest part of the job is not being heard or recognized for the hard work you put in day in and day out.  ANY COMPLAINTS OR CONCERNS YOU HAVE, THEY GET SHUT DOWN IMMEDIATLE. It is not easy working with people experiencing homelessness so It's frustrating coming into work and having to hear all the gossip your MANAGEMENT put out in the public.  THIS JOB WOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER WITH BETTER MANAGMENT.

Frontline case managers are exceptional. The people on the ground to include case managers and field supervisors know what they’re doing. Unsure what the higher echelons of management did but I was certainly impressed with my peers. They have a genuine feel for what they do and have seen people go above and beyond for the amount of work they do for the community.

That said, this isn’t for everyone. You will see some disturbing things and will hear even more disturbing stories. It’s a good way to see if this kind of work is for you in an environment where you’re somewhat protected with a buddy system. 

Be aware that this job does ask a lot and you will be on your feet quite often. A good partner can make or break a deal with this but you trauma bond and you’ll walk away with more than a handful of stories.

All of the managers that I have worked under have been very understanding and supportive. The organization really cares about your mental health and encourages you to have a good work/life balance. I came into City Net without a whole lot of experience. Even so, the organization helped me learn and grow, which helped me get promoted to a new position where I continued to learn and grow. 

They tend to take a while from the beginning to end of your hiring process, but once you meet your colleagues and realize how amazing they are, you understand why HR takes their time in choosing compassionate and good humored employees. 

Being with the company has had its ups and downs. Communication has been something that the organization has struggled with for some time now, which makes it very hard to be heard or even be acknowledged.  Management feels overwhelmed at times, it feels like they don't have anytime to talk with you about what's going on with you or your caseload. Work place culture is non existent and feels like you are alone and office "clicks" seem to encourage favoritism and isolation. 
Trainings and the ability to make use of a company vehicle are nice, so that you won't have to use your own car. Once a month meetings help with isolation a bit. 

Working here starts off feeling great like you’re apart of a helping cause until you  hear staff concerns and clients. You are given a starting role and told you to will have to clean occasionally which turns into daily and you are constantly handling unsanitary things such as soiled items with urine and p . You realize are just a janitor & security guard to observe and report.  Sometimes you feel unsafe with regards to incidents that occur with clients. This job can burn you out pretty fast and will diminish your will to exceed on your daily overall life goals. 

With that being said, there is a lack of training and support from management. HR is there only for the company NOT FOR THE EMPLOYEES. No one from management or HR know what is feels like to actually work in the field which explains the lack of support. Trainings are all done online and then you are expected to sink or swim. Overall, this company has the perfect set up for burn out. Most of their employees are burnt out and have only been working for a few months. No one bats an eye to the toxic work environment. There is a lack of safety protocol. The workload is insane!

The flexibility and management treating people like actual human beings is definitely a perk. But besides this, the higher ups are so disconnected from their staff and supervisors show a lot of favoritism when it comes to evaluations and promoting.
There is no reason for retention because there is no pay raise for being here longer and this place just continues to give more and more work to do with no compensation for the amount of work.
At this job, you’ll have a lot of uncomfortable, unsanitary and depressive experiences and apparently anyone who wants to trauma bond with this coworkers will only get in trouble from supervisors.

A typical work day consists of helping clients and having the Site Manager micro manage everything you do. I learned alot about how to interact with people the way management felt was appropriate. They need to replace the Site Manager with someone that has more compassion for clients. The hardest part of the job is having to be careful on how you interact with clients so management dosen't decide to investigate and discipline you for your interaction.
