Clear Channel Outdoor

ClearChannel Outdoor is the outdoor division of iHeart Media.  This area consists of the Sales and Real Estate teams.  The two teams worked closely to market and sell billboards.

The real estate division is responsible for building and maintaining the structures.  Licensing with the Secretary of State, preparing and maintaining management agreements, obtaining and maintaining insurance, interacting with customers and other billboard owners.  In addition, the real estate team is responsible for making payments to outside billboard owners.

I enjoyed learning various aspects of the real estate market outside of residential.  The most difficult part of the job came at the beginning of my employment; the previous Lease Coordinator had resigned prior to my start date.  I was, however, able to learn the job and get up to speed without much difficulty.

The most enjoyable part of the job would include the holiday parties,  chili cookoffs, and external activities.  A ping pong table was also made available in the billboard hanger to help the staff to alleviate stress.

Disclaimer: The company was in the middle of changing a lot when I first came in to Clear Channel. It's possible these issues could be resolved now.

Management heavily prioritized high numbers in all departments, regardless of quality or meaning . There was confusion about my role that meant I was hired for something else and was quickly shuffled into an intense and stressful new role with little support. I had wonderful coworkers who were more than happy to offer help, but management who heavily discouraged asking for or receiving help. Had to stay late most days just to keep up with the volume. I worked with a lot of AEs who were a mixed bag. Some were absolute angels. A lot were the type to shout at you over the phone or send nasty emails if their requests weren't put at the top of the list 5 min after they sent it.

Also, you really gotta love billboards and outdoor advertising to really be happy working here. If you're just ambivalent or don't care, you definitely won't thrive.

Advice for AEs, treat your operations and creative teams like GOLD. Give them support if they need it, cuz without them your clients would have nothing.

It's all about the numbers. The sales people are always pressured. The support staff are extremely underpaid and under appreciated. There was a lot of upper management turnover, and with that there would be some stupid new initiative every couple months or so. Lots of hype about a pretty boring medium. Uninspiring office space.

The people were great though. The sales staff were friendly and treated their support staff with respect. Local management was transparent about the state of things and I think really tried to make it a good place to work. They were pretty cool about letting us off early before holidays and in general were pretty liberal with work/life balance. 

I would not recommend it as a place to work because I was insanely underpaid, and raises were few and far between. There was no room for advancement. It may be a better place to work if you are a sales person. I liked the people, but felt like I was being taken advantage of by the company. I feel the problems at CCO come from higher up the ladder than the local leadership.

A typical day would include charting poster programs for account executives. Produce maps of charted poster programs. Work with account executives on any revisions to proposals in order to contract locations. Process space contracts ensuring contracts match up with charted locations. Run posting production orders for operations.  I learned to work with a wide range of personalities with in the branch. I also learned to take ownership and accountability of tasks. The hardest part of the job was dealing with numerous requests from the corporate level to supply information for initiatives at a moments notice. The most enjoyable part of the job was getting to work with and know a wide rang of people from different places and back grounds. We all worked hard to make a very complex endeavor run smoothly. My I also say good communications had a big part in all.

Fun work and lots of great co workers but lots of bad apples as well. Too many people looking to shift blame instead of take responsibility.  Too many people in charge of other people who just don’t care about them, and are only looking for people to feed their egos and yes people. If asked for your honest opinion from a regional or local manager you probably should keep your mouth shut as your words will likely be used against you later. I would never work there again with one a major overhaul of bad actors that have upper management convinced they are doing a great job off the backs of the ones who really are doing a great job and not due to their help or influence. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Company has HUGE disparity in pay between people that do the work and the upper management and leadership...HUGE
One ESSENTIAL co worker had been there over 25  years when I left, and was paid less than 65k
Also they are very happy to triple your workload and offer no incentive for the unrealistic work load.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
You are NOT an asset no mater what role (other than management) you have. You are considered a disposable tool and will be treated as such. Ask about the HIGH HIGH staff turnover they have.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
cubes with no natural light in a 1970s factory (unless your leadershipship)

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
over worked and way under paid

I have never worked for such a dysfunctional company in all of my years in corporate America. The company needs new management from the top executive level to the bottom. Every company is in the business to make money; however, this company and its management go about it in the wrong way. They just don't get it. They are suffering financially and that pressure is put upon every single employee and it is felt! They consistently ignore critical issues and gloss over them with ridiculous meetings that produce zero results. They have made a business that is fun and fast-paced, highly stressful, and life draining. If you are looking for a job that's fulfilling and meaningful then I would definitely consider other options. At the end of the day, you have to decide what you are willing to trade for a paycheck.

Working as an IC for CC since 2009. Concentration on selling inventory in Rockford Roscoe and S. Beloit IL. I can also sell inventory in Marengo, Woodstock McHenry CO & Lake CO IL.

My day consists of cold calling in all the above areas. When I stated with CC I did not get an account list I have had to develop new accounts directly through cold calls. NO call in's. Responsible for selling strictly Outdoor Advertising mainly poster units.

The hardest part of my job as an IC is not being able to access the CC system that has all their inventory on line and has many tools to help you sell. I have had to take many photos of the poster units and learn the inventory manually.

The nicest part is being my own boss.

Deadlines are set up in away where you always feel you have enough time to complete everything. However from time to time you will have last minute orders and changes needing to be work and even then if you start to feel overwhelmed the support you have from your team quickly extinguishes that stress. You are left to yourself 
about 90% of the time. The 10% being when someone has a question and calls you into a 3 minute zoom call We have 3 team meetings a week at most for 30mins at most. Not alot of side bars,  its what is the solution, how to provide the solution and then execute solution. This is a logical company with logical ideas, understanding, morals and compensation.

There is more rampant bigotry within management and Clear Channel's culture all the way up to the cooperate level. Moreso than any other company I have ever worked for. The pay is 20% below market average. Your job duties will continue to expand without additional compensation until the eventual liquidation of company assets. You will get a 3% pay increase each year even when inflation is 11%. You will be asked to take on more and more work so that by year 3 you are doing 30% more than when you started. The office culture is passive aggressive and dehumanizing. If you are in real estate you will never be paid fairly for the work you do. You will execute leases that net the company hundreds of thousands and go full calendar years without an incentive.
