Cobb Technologies

I started here at Cobb as a delivery driver in the downed economy. I was quickly promoted to Supply Specialist and worked there for a year handling all the supplies and dealing with the shipments nad keeping inventory stocked. When i heard the position of Account Manager was available, I immediately applied and got the job. They are very good about promoting from within the company.

Overall Cobb is a great place to work. I typically come in and go through emails that need my attentions regarding billing issues, placing supply orders or service calls, or any issues that need to be dealt with. From there, no day is ever really the same. I am on a team of about six other account managers and we do everything from the billing, to customer service, to calling on customers. We call them typically to get meters off their machines to bill out invoices but it is also a good opportunity just to check in on them and see if everything is going well and if they need to upgrade or give them any extra attention. We also help the sales reps gather information for proposals to upgrade the customers.

My co-workers and management have always been a big support system for each other. As co-workers, we always help each other out and work together to reach our common goal: customer satisfaction. Management is always there to make sure we do it right and first time and always put our best food forward.

My goal here was to work my way up into sales. I have learned a lot in this position about sales from how deals are written to dealing with leasing companies, to writing the actual proposals. I have actually had the oppotunity to sell some maintenance contracts myself. I have also been exposed to dealing with customers regularly and it is not always pleasant. I have dealt with my fair share of unhappy customers and feel comfortable giving them good customer service no matter what the situation.

I truly believe Cobb is a solid company with competitive pay, great benefits, and a fun, engaging work environment. It’s a close-knit organization with many long-tenured employees, and that camaraderie is part of what makes it special.

That said, departmental experiences can vary. In my time there, I found the workload overwhelming due to high expectations and limited support. My department experienced full turnover, and I was the sole team member for some time before new hires came onboard. Leadership within the department had limited expertise, and communication was not always transparent, which often created challenges in direction and expectations.

I think Cobb can be a wonderful place to work, but your experience will largely depend on your direct leadership and the resources available in your role. 

At the time of the interview I had 36 yrs. experience in accounting as a full charge bookkeeper/staff accountant. I am semi retired and wanted  a job that allowed me to be around people. I get paid to be nice to people. It was a refreshing change. Everyone is lovely to work with there.
Hardest party of the job is the commute. I drive approximately 40 mins. to Glen Allen from the village of Midlothian.
The most enjoyable part of the job is there is being able to help people, both internally and customers that visit.

I was really excited to learn a new job field. I joined the company in the middle/lingering end of COVID. All of my training was virtual through video calls. I was mostly told by my manager to refer to the binder. I thought everyone was incredibly nice, helpful, and encouraging, except for my manager.  Everyone who worked there was amazing, except for the person that fired me before everyone was returning to the office. If you have previous experience in account management, you might do all right. If you have zero experience I probably wouldn't apply. 

I had such high hopes when I joined. The company itself has many great attributes. Like allowing pets to come to work, Flexible PTO, etc. There were some drawbacks as well. The "Be one of Us" vibe that comes across seems to be thick throughout. If you are not in the "clique" or family, you may stagnate. It really comes down to who your Director is as to the experience you may have. The top tier management of the company need to really look into how employees are treated and why they leave.

Cobb Technologies allowed me the opportunity to learn how an in-house marketing department works. They provided the bedrock for how I design things for other companies now. I created a lot of work that will be used by Cobb for the next few years, and I'm incredibly proud of that. I was also able to expand my copywriting skills by writing articles about featured employees, as well as different FAQ's that customers had.

I took this Job because I wanted to work the other side of my brain - from engineering to Sales person.

I accomplished what I wanted to do. I worked the territory of Charlottesville, and surrounding areas selling printers and copiers. I focused on corporate business.

My job on lasted two years. Cobb Technology lost contract to a competitor and as a result I was down sized.

The company has no structure or processes. They are always micromanaging their technicians and treat them like they are beneath them. If you like hearing repetitive messages everyday about what something someone is doing wrong, then this is the place for you. They don't do your reviews or give raises. Not the greatest place to work. 

The role of the Account Manager is extremely demanding and very busy. The typical day may include answering the phone over 100 times, placing service and supply calls and also fulfilling emailed request from customers and sales rep. Extremely high turnover rate and most of the admins are unhappy with how they are treated.

Cobb was very intentional about building and maintaining a great company culture. Technology is a growing industry, so there is room to grow with the company and build a long-term career. Communication can be improved upon, but honestly, most know and do work to create a connected and communicative environment. Great co-workers and lots of cross-departmental collaboration.
