Your experience at Finisar will vary greatly depending on the type of employee you are and what you are expecting from your career.  If you are the type of person that isn't interested in career advancement and just looking for a stable job where all you need to do is show up to work every day (nothing wrong with that), then this company will be a good fit for you.  

On the other hand, if you are ambitious, hard-working, and expect to advance your career at Finisar, you will not be happy there.  Personnel management at Finisar is among the worst you will ever encounter, which is a shame because aside from that, they are a good company and have good industry vision.  If you are considering a career with Finisar, consider the following:

1. They don't care a wit about personal development:  Finisar likes out-of-the-box talent and would rather hire someone off the street then to pay to develop the skills of existing employees.  This is evident in their tuition reimbursement program, which is just about the bare minimum that a company can offer and still say they have a program.  Internal job applicants are ignored unless it's a parallel position.  They will not spend resources to develop you for a higher position.

2. Status Quo is king at Finisar:  Finisar does not like to promote from within.  New opportunities are reserved for new hires, and company favorites.  They don't like to backfill positions either, and giving promotions means disrupting their established order.  Don't expect a promotion, if you're low on the org chart, that's where you'll stay whether you are qualified to move ahead or not.

3. Ambition is seen as a threat:  If you are the ambitious, career advancement type, your ambition will be interpreted as greed and you will be resented by senior management, even if you are worthy of advancement.  There have even been instances where workers who have found other jobs and threatened to resign agreed to raises and promotions in bad faith, where their offers were rescinded after they cut ties with the other party.

4. Poor performance goes unchecked:  Rather than sanctioning workers who show consistently poor work performance/output, they are simply ignored and their workload is transferred to high-performers.  This creates a environment that empowers the lazy to stay lazy, while creating a hostile, disruptive, and resentful environment for those who take their career seriously.  There is a lot of "dead wood" at this company.

So think long and hard before considering a career with these guys.  If you're the best at what you do and your end game is to advance your career, you would definitely be better off somewhere else.

I worked in diamond turning for 3 years. The shop is production based and individualized to make the environment a dog eat dog scenario. The shop is also full of lazy unproductive selfish pessimists that only work there because they are trapped financially. The environment drives out good hearted individuals with a real work ethic, and their turnover rate reflects that. Management is also as corrupt as it can get. The department leader is a great genuine person, but the production supervisor is a sexist, narcissistic, un-educated and unprofessional pig. Unfortunately he runs just about the whole shop and has a hand in everything that goes on, on the shop floor. He alone is the reason so many great people leave the department. He will pick favorites, blatantly disrespect other employees, leverage his power over anyone who stands up to him, etc.. Despite having numerous talks with the department leader about the different problems that arise with the shop supervisor, nothing has ever changed. It seems as if the supervisor is in an "untouchable" position of management. Very few people stand up to him and speak out, because they know that it will put them on his radar, and they will be continually criticized, scrutinized, and pressured for their performance. I've had numerous personal talks with other employees about having difficulty enjoying home and family life because of the unbearable stress that the supervisor will put on you, if you challenge his views. As far as job duties, they're actually pretty interesting. Each day is different from each other, and you'll have a great opportunity to learn a variety of machining concepts and challenges that will keep you busy and engaged. With that being said, the organization of the shop is an absolute mess. Blue prints are incorrect, work instructions are incorrect, tooling and various cutting tools are scattered about the shop, mislabeled and damaged. You will need to be extremely self sufficient to succeed in this department. I really expected more out of a professional work environment. I worked as a remote software engineer intern during summer 2022. My primary task was to write unit tests for the simulator and firmware side of a specific laser. Key takeaways from this project were learning new software such as Azure DevOps, google testing framework, Jenkins, and Wrike. I also feel a lot more confident coding in C++ and some of its key concepts after completing my project. 

The team I worked with was great. I had a senior manager who I had weekly check-ins with regarding my progress. More often, I had meetings with my assigned mentor/engineer who would guide me regarding my specific project. Both engineers were a valuable resource in learning and completing my project. They were very accessible and took their time with me when explaining the project to me. Overall, a great experience working with my small team.

I worked this internship remotely, so sadly I did not have a lot of opportunities to meet other engineers and inters in-person. However, the HR team set up great intern events throughout the length of my internship which encouraged networking. These events were very fun and interactive. 

Overall, I had a great experience with in internship at Coherent. I found it to be very valuable in both aspects of expanding my software knowledge as well as expanding my connections. I would recommend Coherent to anyone in my network.

My first year with Coherent was to support the Raydiance customer base that they would try to earn.   This part of my history was very disconnected from what Coherent teams understood we were there for.   I was eventually trained in Excimer and the Coherent Short Pulse products.  Eventually I would be required to work from my home office due to lack of facilities requirements.  Working from home disconnected me from the team and the company, in my opinion.   This limited the shared experiences I routinely  had within a factory.   The work place culture was uncomfortable to me as it felt like all were struggling.  Disconnection between business units created difficulty in supporting many customer calls throughout the day.   The hardest part of my job was providing answers to multiple customer configurations with minimum connection between the groups responsible.    The most enjoyable part was establishing the link necessary to support in the future and perfecting my abilities with the Coherent CRM Oracle.

From my first day I felt very welcomed by management and other employees but starting in a newly created internship position, I was uncertain of what exactly I was going to be working on. It took a few days for my work arrangements to be set up and some time to adjust but after a week or so, I felt very comfortable in my role and my managers began to give me steady work and trust me to independently complete it. Working in manufacturing engineering, I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from many employees here who have been eager to share their knowledge and experience, providing me a deeper understanding of the manufacturing processes done at Coherent's location here in Budd Lake, NJ.  The HR/Recruitment team has done a great job organizing intern activities like workshops and guest speaker events. Unlike some other internships, the work that I am doing is meaningful and I feel appreciated by management and other staff. 

Overall this is a once-great company that seems to be going downhill. Management has a very hands off approach so employees are able to get away with poor performance such as taking long breaks and showing up late, harassing other employees, and doing generally poor work. To be fair, some teams are much better than others, and management seems intent on improving things.
Recently the Aerospace & Defense groups have been dealing with a massive production ramp with no increase in employee count, job titles, or pay to match the workload. Benefits and pay are lower than they would be at competitors. 
Coherent did a really good job handling the Covid-19 pandemic, so it's a shame to see the work environment going downhill. Recently there have been a lot of issues thanks to high interest rates on a large amount of debt and the overall market slowdown. 

The environment is a slower paced job than I have ever been used to. The fab is separated to two different parts essentially Epi, and not Epi area and I would not recommend going into their Epi side of manufacturing its not a team environment its more of who can I throw under the bus to make myself look better and the current manager doesn't understand the process well at all and repeats the same question when he doesn't understand so you have to give the same answer but in different ways until he gets the meaning communication in that department is terrible. The people who do maintenance and the machines are super awesome and great with letting you know whats going on and engineers for the most part are very helpful and open to questions there is potential for it to be better they just haven't figured it out yet.

Finisar have a friendly working and healthy environment for it's employees. What I enjoyed most was the company provide the exercise facility with yoga and other  health care classes that I and other employees could use before or after long day working. In addition, a company subsidize every weekday with healthy hot lunch.

My typical day of work, I had 12 hours graveyard weekend ship Starting from 6:00 pm to 6:30 am next day. I was working responsively and independently but also as a team and get along with my teammate to meet the production quantities and qualities requirements.

 The great part of working at Finisar was working environment, the hard part was long hours and very competitive!! 

Overall, I was enjoyed working there.

  1.A typical Day at work is not organized. Coworkers come to work what ever time they want. Training is provided by coworkers to make you fail, that does not fallowed by written instructions.  
  2. I learned how to handle optical assemblies.
  3. Managment very poor. Accepts favorizm vs job quality. Supervisor asks for personal favors. Yelling
  4.Coworkers calls and receives personal phone calls. Coworkers talks  on the phone very laud dealing with personal issues. Disturbing other coworkers by setting personal none work related meetings. Making dirty jokes. 
  5.  The hardest part of the job is dated written work instructions. Continous redlines. No team work. 
 6.  No one is watching you working over your shoulder.

If you are looking for an unsafe, toxic work environment this is the place for you! To top it off, there is no advancement. None. Management is bullying and incompetent. 

Typical work day includes trying to keep the proverbial wheels from falling off as they seem to be making it up as they go. There are talented people who work there but they are undercut by terrible leaders who are selfish, arrogant and insecure all at the same time. 

The hardest part of the job is knowing that no matter how good you are you will NEVER be promoted. 

The most enjoyable part of the job is the people who you spend your days with. Truly good people. Another benefit of the job is the flexibility. The flexibility will unfortunately be going out the window as well. 

There are no bad teams, just bad leaders. Unfortunately this place has no shortage of bad leaders.
