Community Hospice and Palliative Care

A typical day at work would consist of checking my email then check the chaplains on-call calendar to ensure that coverage was taken care of since their was to be a chaplain on-call 24/7 and I over saw the on-call calendar, I also oversaw the PTO calendar to ensure that any chaplain that was on PTO would have coverage for their assigned team. Next was administrative duties for the Spiritual Care department such as schedule staff meeting and reservation of a room for the meeting responding to request from the manager of the spiritual care department. 

Since this is a satellite office for Continuing Pastoral Education class, I was also administrative assistant as needed for that department.  If there was anything that the chaplains needed I would get that done. I would then start entering family members information into the bereavement program so that they would receive letters and flyers in reference to the services that were offered. Next I would check with the finance intake staff to get any folders for new admissions on Medicaid, I would send out and email the a contact at the Medicaid office with the patients information, while I waiting on a reply I would send the new patients information to the assigned psychosocial generalist. After I received the response from Medicaid I would forward that information to the generalist. There were days that I would move scanned documents in laserfiche or create a chart in quick fields if no chart was already created.  I would also audite deceased patients charts that had Medicaid to ensure that the correct documents were in the charts and that their was a zero balance on the account.

I filled in as the temporary Bereavement Coordinator when the current one had taken another position within the company. The bereavement counselor who had been there the longest was put in as supervisor and the manager for the social workers was also the manager for the bereavement department. I guess what was the hardest part of this job was trying to figure out why I had a good working relationship with everyone except the supervisor for the bereavement department and why she went out of her way to try to prove that I was not doing my job correctly. Unfortunately for her I was doing my job correctly. 

The most enjoyable part of my job was working for the Spiritual Care Department. I truly enjoyed the working relationship I had built with the 17 chaplains and the support they gave me. I also enjoyed working with the generalist with Medicaid. I pretty much had a good working relationship with my co-workers except one.

One thing I learned is not to beat myself up because one person did not like me. That was their problem not mine, Just continue to do my job the correct way and to the best of my abilities.  The more you are willing to do the more they will give you to do.

Community Hospice is founded on compassionate care for patients and their families, and that same level of compassion can be felt while working with most any department, resulting in a satisfying and rewarding job.  I could definitely feel the "good" in the work that I did, knowing that the end result was for the best available care of our patients.  For the most part, departments worked well with each other to accomplish our goals and objectives.  As expected in any company, there were roadblocks that hindered the successful completion of certain tasks and projects.  However, for a company of 900+ employees there are so many wonderful people to help remind why one would continue to work there.  The work day was very non-stop, and time flew by so fast with the current workload it would feel like the day ended as soon as it began.  While the severely-limited resources did not match the level of expectations of leadership, being part a strong team allowed for a united effort to meet our goals as best able.  My opportunity with Community Hospice enabled me to acquire skills and experience in leadership, asset management, budgeting, IT security (Active Directory and auditing), networking, task/project management, and close interaction with Executives and upper management, and for that I am very appreciative.  Much change had taken place during my time there, and hopefully leadership considers WHY people continue to work for Community Hospice, and to take care of those who do.

Working as a social worker in hospice care has been incredibly rewarding in terms of patient and family interaction. The opportunity to provide emotional support, guidance, and advocacy during one of the most vulnerable periods of life is deeply fulfilling. The relationships built with patients and their families, as well as witnessing their resilience and gratitude, make the work truly meaningful.

However, the management and team dynamics have presented significant challenges. The lack of support from leadership has made it difficult to feel valued as a professional, and decisions from management often feel disconnected from the realities of day-to-day hospice care. Additionally, experiences of a toxic work environment among coworkers have negatively impacted morale. It’s challenging to perform optimally in an atmosphere lacking trust and mutual respect among staff.

Despite these issues, the commitment to the well-being of patients and families remains unwavering. Improvements in management practices, a focus on inclusivity, and fostering a supportive team culture could greatly enhance the workplace experience and align the organizational environment with the rewarding nature of hospice social work.

I have had an overall great experience working with this company. You will most definitely have crazy days and be absolutely exhausted by the end of your shift. You will also have calm days that will provide you with time to get to know your patients and their families. Hospice nursing is very patient/family centered, and involves lots of patient education, which I absolutely love. You will feel like you are truly making a difference and helping others at work here. It’s not all sunshine, but no workplace is. I had a few situations where I’ve felt ignored, but others where I have felt tremendous support from the management which makes me feel appreciated and special. Hospice nursing is not for everyone. You need to be comfortable with death and an understanding that these patients and families are going through a very difficult time and you need to show them compassion and kindness during their stay at hospice. You will cry sometimes, and that’s okay..we are human and we are empathetic and we will get to know our patients and families and will feel connected to them through our care. Hospice nursing can be very rewarding, but it’s probably not for you if your idea of reward is monetary. It’s rewarding in other ways that no amount of money can touch. If your heart is in it, you’ll be a lifetime employee here. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
I have the privilege of providing care for patients and their families during some of the most difficult days of their life …. I work with some of the absolute best nurses and caregivers that I have ever worked with in my entire 26 years of nursing …. Excellent company to work for. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I would definitely think that getting a new patient that is uncomfortable in pain or distress and having to get everything in the computer to be able to medicate them and help them be comfortable…. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
We have a wonderful, comfortable environment to work in …. And everyone has the same goal to be of service and to help those in need. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
At the most possible I would only have 8 patients … we always have 2 nurses and 2 aides in the building at all times to care for a maximum of 15 patients

Have worked with CHPC for almost 5 yrs and have never been happier. Yes you do have to have strong critical thinking skills and assessment skills but I have never felt  so much honor in being a nurse. I get to feel like I've actually contributed in someone's relief in pain management and just an overall achievement of helping a family in crisis. Instead of running to an ED in the middle of the night with all those stressors of caring for a loved one we get the opportunity to come to the patient in their setting and educate the family and provide services to them in the comfort of their home. It's very rewarding and we always have caring physicians and ARNP as backup when we need orders and just to get help needed. Our supervisors and staff are only a phone call away and always helpful. I honestly have never been in a company that is this caring and supportive. If anyone wants a position with CHPC you don't ever leave most our staff are here for many years and to me that says something about a company.

Nursing management was on point, kind and fair. Higher level management seemed to be missing the point.  Many times I felt all alone and technology seemed to fail. They had changed the hardware/ software and charting systems too frequently. seemed without due diligence(knee jerking behavior).  Staff consolidation and downsizing had an incredible reflect on providing the "promised services" to hospital high level staff and patients and families.  I was regularly  back pedaling on failed marketing promises and felt I was doing a disservice to a one incredible company and it's public that it served. I had seen a lot of changes in just the short 8 months I worked there. Many staff left. It was unfortunate. I loved the job. I loved the idea. I loved my immediate managers.

This company has a brand reputation built on the compassionate backs of its employees, not it's management. Divisive, threatening, untruthful management was company-wide and started from the highest office. No respect for staff, constantly erased boundaries to ensure the employees were overworked and not paid for extra hours, low pay, and unaffordable benefits that increase yearly more than the pennies-worth annual raise. HR was unprofessional, incompetent and made excuses to not resolve problems. I have been a nurse for almost 15 years and that was the most hostile, pretentious work environment that I have ever encountered. They should not be a nonprofit, because they are profit driven, not patient-centered. Do not put your licenses at risk working there!

This company would be a better place to work with if all three Managers and assistant were replaced with new. Two Fat assistant doesn't know anything at all. And favoritism is so bad at this company. Overloading tickets to hard working employee and letting lazy employee just stay at warehouse and do nothing. You got one Fat manager that cant even get off his chair to get the paper out of the printer. Instead tell you to get the ticket for him out of the printer. This guy just plain Fat lazy. And then you got one black guy that's racist he will keep calling you adding more tickets while you are driving to your routes. I don't recommend anybody to work for this company while those three IDIOTS are no longer there working. Trust me I've been there working for this Three IDIOTS.

Stressful form start to finish, physically, emotionally, spiritually draining. I will say was a great learning experience. Management is profit focus driven: the opposite of hospice philosophy, they claim to care about customer service. However, the repeated response to complaints from patients and their families is to establish scapegoat to blame and hang them out to dry, this is an ongoing continuous cycle. needless to say employee retention is very low. The best and most memorable part of the job was the opportunity to serve patients and their families through the end of life journey truly an honor to serve patients and their families and share the love of God.
