It sounds all good and well when you are first hired there but watch out. I quit due to abuse by a manager in which I had to take them to court. The management did nothing about this incident and upon my resignation, I never received a pay check to compensate my mileage which should have been a good $350-$400. They attempted to make me unemployable, as they were mad about the court cases. It took almost a year but detectives and courts intervened and resolved this situation and I was able to get another job.

Aside from poor management, morals, and ethical behavior, co workers were a large issue as they would treat consumers poorly, for example, eating food from the consumers refrigerator, having consumers buy them pizza, taking consumers with them to the store so they could get their own shopping done instead of the consumers, giving meds multiple times and not reporting these major incidents to the state etc.

One more thing I'd like to add on is that, you are unable to make any appointment for yourself even something like a doctors appointment. If your shift was over and the next person called off, you were stuck there. I worked with a guy who worked for four days straight until they finally got someone to come in for work. I missed multiple appointments, had to call off from my second job several times because legally the consumer cannot be left alone and no one would work etc.

If I could give a lower rating, I would.

CSS Inc. is a great company to work for.  We service individuals with developmental disabilities.  You can work as little or as much as you want, if you apply yourself and train at as many sites as possible.  Pay is low but competitive within the industry.  As an HPC you work with the same individuals everyday.  Work life is very much like a family atmosphere.  After leaving work for the day, I feel good that I made a difference in peoples lives.  Turn over is higher than it should be, and that is mostly due to unrealistic expectations and the grass is greener mindset.  If you find that taking care of someone else who cannot take care of themselves makes you feel like a better human, I highly suggest you apply.

Pass out meds, make a meal, give a shower and shave, make a snack, pass out more meds, assist consumer with ADL's, document what happened and generally be friendly and helpful

All  of the above +an outing to church, movie, festival or restaurant

Helping the individual with everyday tasks. I learned fast to remain calm when someone is exploding and not to react but rather to communicate and find out what caused the incident and to teach him  a better way to handle it the next time. The management was very nice and helpful at CSS. There was one other coworker that worked this residence with me but opposite shifts and we communicated a lot and worked as a team although not together to get things accomplished and to be able to help the individual in a more timely manner when he would have outbursts. The hardest part of this job was dealing with the individuals explosive disorder in public because he could say rude and hurtful things to strangers .   The most enjoyable part of the job was when the individual was having a good day and accomplished something seeing the smile on his face and how proud he was.

The company overall is terrible. There is maybe a couple people that will actually care, but for the most part you are disrespected, overworked, and treated as if nothing you do is enough. I've worked 20hr shifts days In a row, denied days off for important appointments, and have been asked to LIE about the treatment of the individuals. The only thing in this company that makes me happy is the individuals, but they unfortunately don't get the care they deserve. Meds are never in on time, staff will let them sit in dirty attends for hours, and individuals will be forced to go to day programs despite it being a obvious risk to their health.(the company loses money if the individuals get to stay home). Documentation is a joke, and paychecks are never consistent because they will short you. My advice, go find a company that will actually treat you like a human.

I would not even recommend my worst enemy to work for this employer! When I applied I read the reviews but of course I still tried because I really enjoy working with kids and adults. 
I wish I would’ve listened to those reviews! I was fired because I called off for 2 days ! I sent in a doctors excuse and they still didn’t care or try to work anything out. The home managers were high or drunk in the work environment. They house I was in got bed bugs and nothing was done for a couple more months ! Everyone was very nice until you start working more and they get very rude. Please don’t work here until a change is made. I went to the state board to have them be aware of the type of things that’ was going on within this company. 

The consumers are given money , and the home managers commonly take it for themselves instead of giving it to the consumers !  They do not care at all about the consumers !

There was lots of overtime and each site had a company van

Administration was not professional  they made decisions based on how the felt about you personally and if you challenged them they would find a way to fire you even if it meant putting you in a no win situation 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It was ok I guess employees were talked down on and they were put against one another for one agenda or another

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
When working at the site it was doing my duties as a dsp/ site supervisor. If working from the office with administration it would be suffocating administration would at times talk to staff as if they were children

You can usually be promoted pretty fast because the turnover rate is so high all throughout the company. You work life and home life aren’t balanced very well as they want you dedicated completely to the company for the most part. Not a whole lot of consistency with corporate it changes from day to day sometimes hour to hour on the “policy and procedures” Lasted a couple years here, probably because of the “promotions” and holding different jobs. If you start out in one and stay in one I probably wouldn’t of lasted that long. The only thing rewarding is seeing the change/help your doing with the consumers. They have you take salary as soon as they can so they don’t have to pay you overtime which you do tons of.

The job is entirely underpaid for what you are expected to do. You only recieve .26 cents per mile for traveling. You will ruin your car with the amount of travel expected. There is constant turnover within the homes leaving it to management to work hours that are exempt from overtime. The office is the single most negative environment that can be produced. There are no incentives for anyone in the company.  If your managers do not want to do their job it is your fault as PC. You will be having to do things that you were not educated or told about and made to feel about 2 feet tall if you do not miraculously know how. You will hear things about you that are not true, that the entire company, including those in the office are talking about. Worst work experience of my life.

•Must be responsible, reliable, and able to carry out job functions independently without ongoing supervision. 
•Must have reliable transportation
•Must be able to provide a copy of current auto liability insurance
•Must have a valid driver’s license

They expect you to work 80 hours a week, if you take vacation you get penalized and all your overtime from the week before is taken from you. There are double standards in the work place. Couples working together and then fighting. Clients are not taken care of. People always on their phones not doing their jobs or putting the best interest of the client ahead of their own needs. No proper training and this company absolutely does not care about the safety of their employees. They will hire anyone as long as there is a body in the homes. You're talked down to and degraded by the director. There is always complaining but nobody wants to do the proper training for the staff to be successful. CSS sets you up for failure!
