Continuum Pediatric Nursing

I started with CP as a brand new LPN, my first working job as a nurse. I was definitely nervous and wasnt yet confident. I worked a case for quite some time that was VERY challenging (working with families can require a lot of patience:)). Then I switched and over the years tried some other cases. A few were great, a few not so much. But thats always the case with total care HH. Since my beginnings as an LPN, I have worked in an office setting (twice) and with Continuum. I always come back because while some times the days can get repetitive, and the work can be a lot, the office staff really does care. Like all places, you will have bumps in the road. But their office staff does work through any issues and are professional. You also often work autonomously. This is a HUGE benefit and you know that if you have ever worked at a hospital or a large medical office. Its cut and dry. You perform your patient care per the plan of care, admin medications per MAR, chart/document, and get along with the family. While I was never impressed with the pay rate, they have done their best to pay what they can and give me raises. Medicaid only pays out so much so that does dictate how much we can make with Medicaid patients. Overall, its the best place I have worked as a nurse. Imperfect, as we all are, but very good company. And anyone reading, they do offer insurance and you do accumulate paid time off which I read someone said they didnt, but I assure you they do. I have used it. Best wishes on employment to anyone reading and feel confident going with Continuum.

I assess my patient; make sure airway is clear, oxygen saturation is within normal limits, temperature, pulse and respiration is within normal range, and the pupillary reflexes are normal.

I administer morning treatment: G-tube feeding and medication

I administer nebulizer treatments and chest physical therapy, and suction, and/or change the trach as needed

Assist patient with Activities of daily living: brush teeth, take a bath and groom. Transfer from bed to chair and vis-versa, and turning and positioning every two hours.

Medication is administered through out the day as prescribed

Changing and/or toileting the patient as needed

I have learnt to be patient. Working in home health involves working directly not only with the patient, but with the patient's family as well

In home health, I work as an indepent contractor so I have learnt how to manage my time to ensure that activities get done on time. Some of my ventilator dependant patients also attend school, so punctuality is a necessity.

In the nursing home environment, as a charge nurse, work on my unit was done as a team. I made sure all the Nursing assistants are carrying the duties efficiently and residents are attend to in proficient and timely manner, and I always helped with resident's Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

Every job has its own challenges and my belief is that the way you handle the challenge and accomplish it, is what determines how hard the job was.

Yhe most enjoyable part of the job is when you see how happy the patients you take care off are; this is priceless

The professionalism of the staff toward each other and the attention given to the continuity of care provided to our clients and their families. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part for me is not being able to do more for the clients that have terminal illnesses and/or diseases.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment and culture of the company is best described as that of a close and caring family while maintaining a high standard of professionalism. We share in the ups and downs of both our personal and  private lives.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My typical day is spent in the private home of my client. Upon my arrival I  do a visual check of my client and the household surroundings including the medical equipment for safety of use. I  provide a complete nurse assessment including but not limited to vital signs, skin condition, activity and response. Provide all ADLs and personal hygiene. Monitor dietary intake and assist with eating. Provide age appropriate activities and entertainment.  Administer medications and treatments per Physician's orders. Notify supervisor  and/or family members of any changes noted in condition. I document the care as provided and update the client's medical chart in a timely manner. Provide routine cleaning of area and equipment used.

I enjoy my job it is with a disable young teenager who has down syndrome and ADHD and RA and bad heart. He cannot not speak but a few words, so at first it was difficult to understand him, but I got use to the words and he knows some sign language, and I learned what he knows but I would love to take sign language and try to teach him so he can communicate more with me, I enjoy playing ball with him, I prepare meals for him, help him in the bathroom when needed, that's not real easy but must be done, he cannot clean himself very good, he is 19 but has a mentality of about a 3 or 4 year old, but he does understand everything I say, that's why I want to see if we can communicate a little better. I bath him sometimes. I show him how to clean his hands and sing Happy Birthday to him twice then he rinses his hands,it makes it fun and it gets his hands clean, he doesn't sleep very much at night so I get him to take a nap, we go for walks and watch movies, he's a good boy.I usually go up North from May till Oct and take care of him.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management wants you to work the job of two people but only get paid to do the work of one.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It's very unfriendly the staff constantly puts down the nurses and the clients. They talk badly about everyone.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day is knowing that you're always going to behind. You will be told to not stay after, but you also need to get your work done. They do not tell you upon hiring you, you will be doing the job of two people. However, One day when you're so overwhelmed that you need help, But they will find every excuse in the book to not help a new person in training, you will realize that you are being set up for failure.

The staff is extremely unprofessional, they talk badly about the field staff, nurses and aides, clients, clients families during their daily meetings. They abuse the system of spending , ordering lunches for themselves, snacks for the office. Violate many HR and labor laws in the office. violate Hippa rules regularly.

Even worse is being sent to main office for "training" This is where i realized why the local office was so dysfunctional as I witnessed the owner sexually harassing and using derogatory comments to the minority staff. 
The only time the office staff pretended to be professional is when they had visitors from the main office. 
Staff worked whatever hours they chose to coming late leaving early

I would spend my days at work in my patients home. I was responsible for administering prescribed medications and treatments to the child in my care, tending to their unique needs at all times during my shift, never leaving them alone or unattended.  I learned how to blend into a families daily routines and become a part of their family.  The hardest part of my job was having to deal with the death of a young child I had taken care of.  The most enjoyable part was feeling that I made a difference in a sick childs life, by taking care of them in their homes, surrounded by their families when they would have otherwise have been confined to a institutional facility that could meet their needs.

Good company when considering being able to work with your personal schedule. Do not offer good benefits and you accrue PTO at a very slow rate. They are expanding their company so hopefully more suitable openings will come open based on the personal desires of us nurses. They have a hard time finding workers to cover shifts if needed, but you can take time with the understanding that you may return to an overwhelming amount of things needing to be taken care of because your shift was not covered (this of course varies depending on how the patient's family is when having to care without the help of nurses)

Working for continuum is good. I have learned new skills working for this company like new ventilators. There is not a great deal of communication in the office between employees and this makes for numerous misunderstandings and miscommunications. The most enjoyable part of my job is being able to interact with the children. The least favorite part of my job is again the miscommunications and misunderstandings that occur because of the lack of communication in the office between office staff..

Very disappointed in this company, I gave 8 years of dedicating my work life to this company. When my child was no longer available to work with, the company threw me out like a piece of garbage. Benefits are terrible. They do not care if you have loved ones at home going through chemo and radiation treatments, or if a family member dies, they only wanted to know how soon I could be back at work. The family I worked for was a different story, very kind, caring and generous... I would never recommend anyone going to work for this company in Pittsburgh.
