the complete lack of individuality; the developer with the most experience would not allow any flexibility and he would micro manage every aspect of development

Restrictive. self expression and innovation was actively discouraged

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The developer with most experience with the project but less overall development experience felt the need to ensure all code written was the way he would have written it

Descartes is a great place to work for the most part. A well run company with offices around the globe. I learned a lot about the different aspects of logistics - having previously been exposed to only a small part of the supply chain. The only issue was daily status meetings where you report what you accomplished the prior day and what you will work on today. This is great for small projects that can be wrapped up in a day or two but is tiresome when working on a very large scale project where there are few daily bench marks.

Overall my experience was good. I met a lot of really great people. Compensation was a below market for my position but I stayed because I had the flexibility in my schedule and really enjoyed what I did. I decided to leave after I lost trust in my management. I no longer felt appreciated and motivated so decided to move on. 

Successful company, completely at the cost of low to mid-level employees. Lack of adequate resources, headcount, clear direction, support from management, path to advancement. You will not find a company that cares less about you as a human being. Management is not accountable, changes course on a whim, doesn't keep their word. Even if it is in writing and signed, you'll have to fight to get what you've earned.

The best part of working at Descartes are the people you work with.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The lack of clear direction and the constant ticket volume.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
They say they facilitate growth, but there has been no advancement or development to allow for such things. Everyone seems to be stuck in the same place they were and will be.

For almost 8 years, I worked for Descartes. I was a service contract analyst that worked with ocean freight. I learned a lot under my supervisors and peers. Unfortunately, there was no room for advancement, so after nearly 8 great years of service, I decided that I was time to move on. I left Descartes on great terms and would definitely work there again.

The workload is easily manageable and well defined, and you'll discover ways to speed up the process over time. While the compensation is only decent, you can work from home with a lot of independence. Job security is decent but if the company is having a bad quarter you'll likely be the first one to go.

The benefits are amazing,  pay is great. But working from home with no personal interaction is hard. Trying to get Manager to take a hostel call was hard, they would roll out changes to the software and not tell us and tell us what the new product or process was.

Overall good place to work! The on call shifts stink, but you get advance notice and can switch. Additionally you get a paid day off plus time and a half for any holidays worked. 

A great place to work! The people are the best I've worked with and for. Super smart, hard working and committed, ethical, open & transparent come to mind just for starters. There are lots of opportunities for growth, development and additional responsibility.
