Many transitions lately. We are on our 3rd administrator  this year, our social worker quit, all of the major dept heads have left. I am still here because I’m concerned about the continuity of care for our residents. Critical care is not being performed at the level residents can trust. Facility needs to be restricted from taking on any new residents until staffing is adequate to care for current residents. 
Discharge Planners: do not put anyone in need of technical skilled or timely care in this facility. 

Building is chaotic, admin offices messy, SW office messy, papers stacked everywhere, old building problems. 
Ethical collapse-
Earlier this year we had a gentleman who recovered sufficiently enough to transition back to community assisted /independent living; We have transition agencies in Saint Joseph JUST for this purpose; he was considered “a head in a bed who didn’t require a lot of care.” The man escaped by calling a cab, going to his bank, closing his Medicaid draft account to stop us from being paid so he could get discharged. Finally he called a cab and checked into a hotel. We then refused to write him discharge papers because he left AMA though no physician was ever consulted to weigh in on his ability to return to his former life. The gentlemen has now returned to independent living w/ 14 hours of at home assisted care per week and is doing well. Once he became a ‘problem’ staff bullied him and ignored him, threatened him with psyche placement. One of our lead staff commented: “if we could get him on enough haldol he’d give up.” 

I feel like everyone of our residents needs to be transferred.

I worked here for a couple years. Everyday I walked in you never knew what type of mood people were in. I could go all day without anyone speaking to me. The upper management sucks and pours all their work off on others, and good luck getting in touch with corporate and them solving anything in a timely manner. The place smells horrible. you can smell it before you walk thru the doors. I will say the day CNAs are great but they are all underpaid for what they do. Therapy never gets a raise. Once you sign the contract on pay, that's what you get. The insurance and benefits are over priced and they don't pay well. All the patients are rugged Ultra even if they cant sit up. its all about those minutes. You have to get the minutes or you're in trouble. Also you work on production just like a factory. you Have to be with your patient 90 percent of your time,  so that means not many bathroom breaks and constantly rushing to meet your production and believe me, you will be called in the office and questioned about the minutes you were not with a patient. Better keep a record of your time. You must punch out when you are done because a ticking clock means your production is lowering. No overtime ever. Barely work 20 hours some weeks. Its hard to live this way. Barely making ends meet. I would seriously reconsider this job and upper management will lie and make things sound so good. Just beware.

A typical day at Diversicare is like other nursing homes, you have people to take care of and people who depend on you. I enjoy all of the residents as they are interactive and create a great environment for the workers. Sometimes its the residents that can make you want to stay not the place itself. Diversicare recently took over what was known as Golden Living. When they came in the door, it has been a mess since. They almost immediately started changing everything  and immediately started loosing employees. They took all the linen carts, trash carts off the halls and have them in closets, which would not be a bad thing only if they weren't centralized in the building where you have to walk all the way down the hall with a hand full of trash or dirty linen. They are also in the talks about removing all the side rail on all the beds in the whole building, which some residents want to keep but they want to take them off. Also some days on 3-11 shift you may or may not have an RN supervisor because they have a lack of scheduling. It is completely short staffed  and does not seem to be getting better only worse than what it used to be. And the insurance is a complete rip off there, the premium you pay from your paycheck is based off of how much you make each year there.

Working at Diversicare was discouraging because of persistent problems in executive leadership. The CEO appeared heavily influenced by the COO, whose behavior toward others was often dismissive and bullying. Decisions were inconsistent and communication lacked transparency, leaving facilities with little structure or guidance.
While thousands of dollars were spent decorating the corporate office for holidays, individual facilities were given barely twenty dollars for the same purpose—a clear sign of misplaced priorities. Staff at the community level worked hard for residents, but morale suffered due to the poor example set by the executive team. A culture of accountability and respect is badly needed.

This job has been very stressful, the administrative people are not very approachable. They treat the CNAs very poorly. Everyday you work short having to pick up more than the appropriate share of patients. They take any kind of patients and expect the CNAs to have a positive attitude when the workload is extremely heavy, the administrative team talks to you like your a child and they are unconcerned about anything you have to say and the pay is not good at all. The administrative people talk  down to the employees like they are slaves. They have no organizational skills at all. They have state in the facility way more than they have employees. The patient care is very poor so under staffed and so much turn over the patients don't get the proper hygiene attention. They hire you under false pretenses. If your desperate for a job by all means apply if you want longevity with a company this isn't the place, they have orientation every Wednesday that should speak volumes. You have to keep track of your hours because your pay is always shorted. This just isn't the place. If your a friendly person they will turn your smile upside down on a daily basis. Good luck to your job search but this just isn't the place.

There are many long term employees there and they truly act as a team to make sure the residents get the best care possible 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
We were frequently short staffed, aside from the long term employees, there was a a lot of turnover. Central supply was not able to keep everything we needed in stock. So no staff, no supplies- unhappy residents and families 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Mostly friendly and willing to help, -mostly- welcoming to new staff but there were some that would run off new staff, despite the fact that it only left them shorthanded and giving them o higher workload.  

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I filled multiple roles in my time there. I was hired as medical records in which I spent the bull of my time in my little office scanning in ppw and ensuring EHR was accurate and up to date. Then I was asked to take over as unit manager and I spent countless hours simply putting out fires and trying to establish some semblance of workflow out of the chaos I inherited. Within both roles I worked the floor at least 24 hrs a week due to short staffing.

I went to a career school during high school and I know the rules for being a STNA, but since I didn't pass the written part of the test I got a job at a nursing home for a dietary aide. I wouldn't want to put any of my family members at the one I'm currently working at because the nurses don't care about the residents every time I go down the hallways every door to the residents rooms are opened (they should be closed),also they leave the doors wide open whenever a resident is in the bathroom. Whenever I bring the coffee cart down for lunch/dinner seems like all the nurses are hiding behind the nursing station on their phones not going to residents rooms whenever call lights are on.The dining room is a alright size room but has flies, the tray racks also has (flies in them)  for the residents hallways that don't come out for food cause they're bed bound. I enjoy listening the residents story's but I don't think this is the right company for me. The coworkers in the kitchen wouldn't talk to you unless they see you doing nothing when its the weekends or when its slow when they should be in the kitchen.

Poor management that is disconnected from the staff that is giving hands on care to the residents. Nurse management disrespectful to employees so badly that turnover is exceptionally high. Scheduling is a nightmare, always wrong and never enough staff.  Aides forced to work 1:30 ratio (sometimes more). Scheduler so rude that new employees quit before they get even close to their 90 day probationary period. Lack of communication and appreciation leads to stressful work environment due to staff being over worked and disrespected. No managerial support, if nurse or STNA notifies the Director they are frequently told " what do you want me to do about it?", which leaves the staff nurses in an unfair situation that sometimes puts licensure in jeopardy. The good RNs that work hard as a team are taken advantage of so badly they dont stay long either. This is all unfortunate because the residents are the ones who suffer. Corporate needs to terminate the current nurse management and scheduler , wipe the slate clean and start over or this place is doomed for something very bad to happen.

There are some good coworkers which is the only reason it is bearable to work there.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The change of management is frequent. With every new set of management they make changes. They claim they will fix what doesn't work but they do not know what doesn't work as they are new to the facility. They often makes things worse.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
High turnover of Staff. There is Staff who have been there for years that just tolerate work to support their lives. Management does not show appreciation to Staff. Corporate Staff, when at facility, rarely interact with floor Staff.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You go to work and do your job to care for the patients. Therapy Staff and Housekeeping are good to work with. You try to ignore the shortness of Staff, short of supplies, patient complains of the food but Dietary have their own issues, and constant change of expectations with the new management brings. You try to get it done in the hours you are at work.

One of the worst places. I have ever worked. The workload is unattainable. If you say anything to management, you are either ignored, patronized and then they make it even harder. There is no consistency of how the staff is treated. Some can be late every day they work without consequence. Some don't have to work weekends or holidays  while others have to work every weekend and most holidays. Some come to work drunk or high and management is slow to address the situation, if at all! You can walk off the job and come back the next day. But if you're there every day on time, be careful that puts a target on your back. They will screw you very chance they get. They  lie to the State when there to investigate complaints about being short-staffed and then blame staff for their deficiency's.    Staff and residents and leaving in masses, that should tell you something.  Why else do they offer a $3000.00 sign-on bonus for nurses and $1000.00 bonus for CNAs?  Do yourself a favor.  The building is full of black mold that they know is there, they just keep painting over it!! Don't give this place the time of day.
