Strange culture, anti social employees, "drink the Koolaid" company mentality, low salary is based on Alabama standards (where the mother company is based) moldy unhealthy old buildings. I have never worked for a more depressing company. I always felt I was working with personality lacking clones. Management changes the rules whenever it's to their benefit, endlessly presenting unrealistic goals. Low to zero morale was the standard in my department and while management realized this, they had no intention of addressing it. Customers have also grown very frustrated with EBSCO's products over the years, which is no surprise. If they only knew how the support teams were refusing to take responsibility for their urgent issues (not my job!) and passing the buck and endless back stabbing, I'm sure they'd take their business elsewhere, but that's difficult these days as EBSCO is doing all it can to gobble up it's competition. Do yourself a favor and pass on employment at EBSCO Publishing!   (Run !)

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of working for EBSCO is long gone in the history books.  Greedy company and toxic management.  Do not work for this company! 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Every single day is stressful.  They DO NOT pay a decent living wage. They do not care about their employees.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Unrealistic expectations of volume of work that can be accomplished. The hardest workers are punished with the bare minimum raises or no raise at all and overloaded with an insane amount of work that is detrimental to their health.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful.  They bombard you with ridiculous corporate training videos that have to be completed by a certain date but do not consider the massive amount of work on individuals.  People are leaving this company every week.  Long term employees are leaving because it has become unbearable.

Typical day was spent sifting through hundreds of emails.  Everything gets done with an email and the threads are endless.  If you cant manage large volumes of email and can't check 24 hours a day, save yourself the aggravation and pass.

I learned that dishonesty, 'convenient' management, poor management vision, and the 'good 'ol boy club' is alive and thriving in Ipswich, MA.  If you can't pucker up, you can easily be ostracized and miserable.

Management is as unimaginable as any other company that lives by the 'good 'ol boy' rules.  They demand long hours, constantly changing goals with no planning or thought, asking for more and more with less provided and setting unrealistic timelines.

Co-Workers are tightly tied to the management structure.  It's all about who you know when it comes to getting things done.  

The hardest part of the job was getting up every morning and doing what I loved to do.  The company sucked the life right out of me.

This seems like a really great job when you start, and it's not the work itself that's the problem, that's actually easy and pretty straightforward. The problems start when you have to meet a productivity level while making very few errors to remain employed. I have seen MULTIPLE people get fired that show up every day and work hard because of this. They will also tell you when you are hired that you may rarely have to work in the warehouse and pick books, this isn't a rarity, you'll do it at least once a week unless you have a doctor's note. They also have a busy season, usually around the holidays, where they require a lot of mandatory overtime and in the summer they have hardly any work at all and offer lack of work at least once a week. There is really nowhere to go from this position either unless you have a degree and are willing to move to a different department.

Daily processing of thousands of journals, editing text and abstracting, correcting and posting e-data to first party programs that would make a final product I never saw. Cross-department cooperation was nearly impossible. Most of the systems had many work-around solutions and band-aid fixes demanding more manpower without compensation. Any upgrades came with far reaching goals without supplying the infrastructure to accomplish it. Management often took a work-harder-not-smarter approach to any issues. Repeatedly hired efficiency experts that would cut staff and demand more from remaining staff. Hardest part of the job was troubleshooting flawed systems. Most enjoyable was a constant movement of employees from department position to new departments.

As an accounts receivable rep it was my job to collect on outstanding invoices.  At last quarter my days in arrears was at 29 days.  I worked closely with other team members as wells as customer service to meet the needs and requirements of customers.  All employees are professional and well trained.  Management is supportive.

Reps are accountable for collection efforts and reports are created to highlight accounts requiring attention.

The most challenging facet of this position was to balance the sales orientated side of business with the accounting side that requires payment for services.

To resolve issues for the customer, to receive payments due to collection efforts are both very rewarding.

I enjoyed the 18 years I worked at EBSCO and I appreciate the opportunity I was given to be a supervisor in the plant. It is an extremely competitive industry and equally extremely hard work both mentally and physically. It is an industry that is affected by the economy a great deal and in winter the work usually is limited but in summer they always did a great job of obtaining enough bids to keep the plant running.
The production pay scale in the plant made it possible to make good money and also provided incentive for each and every employee to give maximum effort in the fabrication effort.
For the person that is very tough and very hard working and in very good physical condition it is a great place to work and be a part of the production team.

I was once advised to observe newer hires in meetings to understand why they were receiving promotions, projects, and structured training -- for which I had to make up their work -- ahead of me. What i observed is that they speak only when spoken to. They schmoozed with the "right people". 

This was clarified for me in a social media post by an executive of the company: "Pretend you don't know anything in meetings to avoid saying what you think". He wasn't being sarcastic or ironic. He meant it as positive advice.

The nature of the work was challenging and fun -- it just led nowhere for me though. At a time when they were seeking innovative products they were simultaneously squashing creativity and free expression of ideas in the name of "productivity".

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing...the company was going bankrupt and was misleading from the very moment I walked in the door. Poor management and organization structure completely wiped out the organization.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The workload was impossible to complete within a 40 hour work week. The work was meant for 3 people and it was condense to 1 person/me. On average I worked 75-80 hours a week and could still not complete the task.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Childish, hostile, unorganized and full of clicks. Separation was the name of the game.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Report after report that no one wanted to do within the company. I was basically the dumping grounds for the company.
