- culture is toxic and favors the bottom dollar instead of establishing and maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and the mental well-being of the employees. Job culture is truly one that is geared towards ensuring the institution remains profitable, even at the expense of the mental well-being of the employees.

- hardest part of the job is reporting to work knowing you have no impartial neutral place to seek guidance and help when warranted

- being a medical school one would expect better benefits, but the school once again managed to offer three basic insurance plans, HMO, PPO and PPO Plus. Each have the highest out-of-pocket monthly premiums with either high copays, and high deductibles

- no departmental perks such as education/tuition reimbursements, health club memberships, daycare options, flex time, telecommuting, stock options

- Nepotism and being willing to slight others and usurp marginalized team members is the only way to get ahead. Leadership staff are concerned about appearances, while being completely devoid of genuine interest in providing growth opportunities for staff. 

- The HR department works hard to uphold the image of the institution, despite the adverse impact it has on the employees. There is no impartial party present to hear the grievances of employees. 

- Given the history of inappropriate depiction of a minority group on the part of the Governor while enrolled as a student at the school, one would believe diversity, sensitivity and inclusion were high on the list of subject matter to improve upon.

The Department of Family and Community Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School has fantastic leadership.  Our chair of many years is a devoted, highly capable and experienced educator and leader.  She leads by example, and attracts like faculty.  The residents, who are with us for three years before graduating, are very interesting, smart, hardworking individuals who bring a world of experiences with them, enriching the environment to a very high degree. You learn medicine, you learn about the world, you learn humanistic qualities which are taught by example.  

A typical day is spent writing rotation schedules, call schedules, interacting with internal and community faculty, trouble-shooting for residents who have difficulties navigating the road.  Or, it could be spent setting up and tracking evaluations, writing letters of reference, working on recruitment.  It can be spent setting up clinical rotations with community faculty and following up with legal letters of agreement, curricular goals, etc.  It could be spent working with professional organizations such as the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians, the Virginia Board of Medicine, etc.  There really isn't a typical day - there are just so many facets to the job.

The most difficult part of the job is writing the accreditation reports which are annual, and highly detailed.  They require a great deal of diverse data that must be procured from many different sources, including accreditation surveys, internal surveys, billing, residents' and faculty's self-reporting of scholarly activities, duty hours, etc.  There is a lot of "chasing" involved in securing all of this data.  Often policies need to be updated or otherwise tweaked.  The list goes on and on.

EVMS I thought initially was a good place to work - but within 6 months of working there I realized why I was hired and no one else had taken the job offer.  The pay is LESS than what others make - this goes at all levels from the secretaries to the doctors, and also they keep giving you more work, less free time, and they expect you to work more for less.  There no are pay increases whatsoever, so you essentially work for the same salary from when you were first hired.  
You also work under FEAR and I mean FEAR as you are constantly being threatened with being let go or even reported to the medical board even if you did nothing wrong.  I really tried to make this job work, and I really enjoyed the work, but my bosses were disinterested, Fear mongors, hatred filled and all they really cared about was how many foreigners they can attract to a State residency program - and I guess I wanted to see more US citizens in the program. 
In addition, I brought in money to a department that was losing money, and I trained residents way beyond what was expected, Still the department did not care - they wanted to graduate a mediocre resident, not one that excels.  I expected perfection, but EVMS does not expect perfection, at least in the department I was working. 
They were more interested in bringing in GRANTS that really did not help anyone, except the chairman's pocketbook - and I really am telling the truth here.
I can tell you that the General Surgery department is OUTSTANDING, as are other departments (other great departments are Urology, Nephrology, Radiation Oncology, Trauma, and ER), but not the one I work in.   I quit after just working there 1 1/2 years, moved on, and had 11 job offers within 2 weeks of quitting - EVMS - you are a bunch of FOOLS.

Not the worst place, definitely had some good moments and things I liked. Got along with coworkers ok but moral was constantly down due to frustration. If you are lazy don't even apply because no matter your position you will have more on your plate then you should. There is always a budget issue despite more and more patients coming in. Since they don't turn patients away the staff they DO have get more and more work they can't keep up with. Then when mistakes are made because of this higher ups aren't very forgiving about it. Some of the doctors seem unaware of the learning curve their staff has while keeping up with non stop issues. I will say the doctors are excellent but the office is unorganized and patients constantly yell at you about appointments that have been changed or availability MONTHS out because again no one is turned away so easy to overbook. both supervisors were nice but there was a lot they actually couldn't help with all they could to was forward concerns to a bunch of people higher then them that have zero interaction with the staff. How can you understand issues you are not involved in? numbers don't tell everything. The same problems keep happening so eventually you just get burned out. It's a shame because the place has potential. I'm not sure if the issue is also because it is a school but since they see so many people in the community they should care about improving the patient.

Compared to a lot of other employers in the area, EVMS is not too bad. The benefits are great and I've had pleasant and cooperative experiences with most of my colleagues (Even people from other departments). However, the opportunities for advancement are very limited and it became discouraging watching the same people get promoted. Especially when those people consistently either knew very little about the job they were promoted to or seemed to take advantage of other's ideas and contributions. Definitely noticed that the highest positions seem to be men and that the women who've been in positions for over a decade got passed up. The company seemed to be more focused on generating more money than looking out for their students because theres so much more they could be adding to the school to benefit them but dont. Biggest complaint is if you wanted to advance somewhere else in the company, your current manager would need to approve the move and can hinder you if they want to keep you. Personally, I've received shining reviews every year and the standard pay raise but my responsibilities have definitely grown past my pay grade. Being promised a promotion and raise without follow through has only made me realize that there will never be any intention of supporting my growth and advancement here.

EVMS put a poor taste in my mouth for the entire medical field. Other states are paying almost $20/hour for the exact same position and to work so hard and have such huge responsibilities and to be paid so little that one can't even live on it makes life difficult. And I see that even though I worked there over 10 years ago, they aren't paying a dime more than I made then.  Having to come in late or leave early for an appointment or sick child was difficult and you were treated as an inconvenience and were written up and reprimanded and could be fired if the manager felt it was "unexcused."  And most of these things I just witnessed as I don't have children myself.
My manager only held certain people accountable to rules. Her favorites were invincible and they knew it. Using their position to get people fired. I felt lucky to have made it out of there. The politics and back-stabbing were part of daily life there. 
It was admittedly one of the most interesting jobs I ever had. Working in the surgery department side by side with the doctors, actively "nursing" and working on patients, treating wounds was the best part of the job. I learned so much and most of the doctors were fantastic to work for and loved to teach.

M.A's are given NURSE responsibilities' without the pay, They want you to call patients and give them abnormal test results OVER the phone. How insensitive is that? Imagine being pregnant and getting a phone call telling you you're baby has down syndrome, that is a conversation a licensed NP/PA/MD is suppose to have, not the M.A!!! 30 min lunch break is not enough and mandatory meetings ON YOUR LUNCH TIME so you're forced into working on your already short lunch time. Everyone hates their life/job here if you want negative energy around you, this is the place. VERY VERY cheap office they want you to only use PPE when its necessary (we still dealing with COVID/potential pathogens) Patient demographic very verbally aggressive and no matter what time you come in no one is ever turned away.....so good luck with over worked ontop of over worked. Unorganized and outdated no computers in exam rooms so best of luck getting patients medical history on paper.

PROS- Hands on experience, Education/Experience goes toward salary.

CONS- 30 min lunch, short staffed, low morale, responsibilities out of M.A scope of practice, insensitive work environment towards patients

Planning, organization, direction and coordination of clinical practice operations and business activities of the department.  Development of department budgets, tracking revenues and expenditures, preparing monthly reports for faculty and staff, perform cost analysis of patient care services, interaction with EVMS Health Services financial administration.  Recruitment, selection, assignment and training of support staff, and all matters relating to employee evaluations, transfers, promotions, discipline, terminations and resignations.  

Recent projects include a collaborative arrangement between Bon Secours DePaul Hospital and EVMS Department of Otolaryngology to bring the services of General Otolaryngology to the DePaul campus, with a new physician and a brand new office.  Responsibilities included working closely with the Project Manager, contractor, Director of Operations and Director of Clinical Services, Director of Marketing and many other support staff to establish and set up the new practice.

A typical work day includes dealing with a plethora of emotional patients due to the nature of this facility.

I learned that being in this position one has does not have the ability to make an independent decision. Everything should go through the manager, who may or may not be available.

At this particular site the manager does not like to deal with the public which makes it hard to provide the best care. In other words, the manager expects her employees to handle difficult patients even when the patient asks for her directly.

The co-workers usually work well together but at times it seems as if the front office staff are targeted for all that goes wrong in the office.

The hardest part of the job is observing the injustice that some patients face.

The most enjoyable part of the job is when patients receive good news and include the office staff.

The pay does not coincide with the work and the training could be much better especially when it comes to dealing with bi-polar patients. Currently, there is no training in that area.

While I do think EVMS is a good company to work for, I did not however enjoy working for The OB/GYN MFM department.  This is the only place that I have ever encountered where a supervisor has no backbone to speak of when it comes to certain employees . This supervisor on many occasions has shown favoritism  to  the front desk staff for their  unprofessional  behavior.  The supervisor  would also speak badly about other people in front of you which I found very inappropriate.  Said supervisor also  enjoyed micro-managing everything and everyone in the department which resulted in pure chaos for everyone. 
I hope things change for that department because like I stated at the beginning of my review, EVMS is a good place to work but I do  believe  that in order for a department to run smoothly and efficiently  you have to have  a good, fair supervisor that looks out for not just a few employees but the whole department.
