Elanco

Elanco is an animal health company that is a part of Eli Lilly, which is a human health and pharmaceutical company.  

Positive comments:
I support Elanco's vision to provide products and technology to support food production.  Overall benefits and compensation are good (i.e. pay is competitive, medical insurance is great, paid time off is OK, year end holiday is a great benefit, etc.).  

Negative comments:
Elanco has grown too quickly.  There is decent effort to develop leaders through training.  However, the daily culture conflicts with the training and promotes/rewards poor leadership behavior.  The organization is siloed (i.e. divided into functions instead of teams).  Leadership focuses on advancement of the function vs. the overall good of the team.  

Eli Lilly/Elanco are based in Indianapolis and 90% of employees are in Indiana.  However, the manufacturing site for Posilac (a sterile injectable) is in Augusta, GA.  The Augusta manufacturing site was acquired from Monsanto in 2008.  Integration of the Augusta site has been a long and treacherous road.  Not only does the physical distance make it difficult to integrate employees, create networks, etc.  But, the knowledge and experiences of the Augusta employees are not valued.  In a short period of time all leadership positions were taken over by Lilly managers.  Leaders look out for themselves.  There is little to no effort placed on employee development or career advancement of professionals in Augusta.  The Augusta site is used as a management training ground for Lilly leaders to return to Indianapolis.   

Over the ten years since Eli Lilly/Elanco took over Posilac manufacturing, the company has proceeded to run the business into the ground.  The manufacturing site is for sale and Posilac production has ended.   

The most enjoyable part of my job has been the people I work with and the relationships I have developed with my co-workers.  The Augusta site has always felt like a family (even after Elanco took over).  

The hardest part of my job is watching people in leadership positions not work together and cause the organization to be in chaos.

The organization is poorly managed, with inconsistent leadership and a workplace culture where favoritism appears to influence decisions. While many of my coworkers were supportive and enjoyable to work with, they were the primary reason the job was tolerable.

The benefits package did not meet the expectations presented during the hiring process. In particular, the vision coverage was far more limited than advertised and provided little meaningful value.

Training was minimal, leaving new employees to figure out processes on their own with little guidance or mentorship. Despite the lack of structured onboarding, employees were still expected to perform at a high level immediately, with little room for mistakes.

Management consistently failed to support their teams. Instead of advocating for employees or addressing concerns, managers seemed more focused on maintaining a positive image with upper leadership. Employee feedback was often ignored, deflected, or dismissed, creating an environment where people felt unsupported and undervalued.

Daily work was made more difficult by inefficient systems and recurring operational issues that leadership showed little urgency in resolving. Rather than addressing root causes, problems were often allowed to continue, creating unnecessary frustration and reducing productivity.

Most concerning, I observed situations that raised ethical concerns that appeared to be overlooked or minimized rather than investigated and addressed appropriately. Overall, the lack of accountability, effective leadership, and genuine support for employees made this a disappointing place to work.


I was hired at Elanco back in March 2016, starting my time there as a Contractor. When first offered the job as a Document Control Specialist, my Contracting company said "You're going to LOVE this one!" knowing this job fit perfectly with my skills and my passion for grammar, spelling and anything to do with administrative duties. I had no idea I would be entering a workplace where I would be treated like family. On days I'd fall behind on paperwork, my coworkers would approach me and offer their help, no questions asked. When I would call out sick, my supervisor's primary concern was ME. I wouldn't necessarily call the large workloads the hardest part, as I love to stay busy. Never have I ever worked with a kinder, more caring group of people, people who always greeted me with a smile, who were genuinely happy to see me and cared about me and how I was doing. When I would take time off, I would actually find myself missing everyone and missing doing my job.
   My job as a Document Control Specialist was the job I had hoped to do for the rest of my life. People always say that finding a job you love is rare and that you are extremely lucky when that happens. They couldn't be more right. Elanco was the company I wanted to spend my life with. Being a Document Control Specialist was the job I took extreme pride in doing and was the job I saw myself doing for the rest of my life. I am extremely sad that it didn't end up that way.

They do not have as good benefits, pay, or as positive company culture as other companies. They are not the worst, but they definitely are on the lower end of middle. Management is poor. Does not listen to or help staff. Company culture is not great. There is little options to move up. The pay is on the low end of competitive. The company has a narrow product and animal species portfolio. They do not allow work from home except for during lockdowns despite many positions being performed more successfully and more efficiently as remote positions. They do not consider work-life balance of their employees. Not all departments are the same. The lower paying departments have a better culture. The higher paying departments are more cliquish and if you do not join in the cliques, you will not be considered for other positions or favorable conditions. Some departments have almost a high school level of environment as far as lack of maturity, lack of communication, and clique formations.  

I worked at Elanco for 6 years. I had a lot of ups and downs, but unfortunately more downs than ups. The benefits were amazing, plenty of paid time off, health, dental and vision insurance were extremely affordable, as well as 401(k) plan and 401(k) match. It was good while it lasted, however I was treated very poorly for the responsibilities I was given. Long story short my stress level was at an all time high everyday, due to poor management and poor staffing to work load balance. I was not compensated well in my salary for the responsibilities I had been given day to day. The benefits was no longer worth the anxiety and stress I endured every day there. I would bring home that stress with me and could not escape it. 

Terribly mismanaged. Favoritism runs rampant. Incompetence is a common theme. Coworkers tend to be great and the only saving grace of this place. The benefits were boasted and made out to me something special and my dental was barely even covered. There is no training program. Once you arrive you are left to fend for yourself and figure it out. There is no guidance or leadership, yet somehow expect you to perform perfectly. Management ignores concerns and deflects, avoids, and passes blame. This job is incredibly tedious and you constantly have to work around systematic problems. Run far from this place. There were so many instances of unethical practices occurring and it was always swept under the rug to save face

I would not recommend working at the Elanco Winslow, ME site. It is the worst I've ever experienced!!! Something needs to change soon. I surely hope Winslow is not representative of Elanco as a whole company. It never used to be this way, but with the current management team the site is suffering and so many employees are unhappy. I've wanted to quit for months, but its hard with family to think about. There is a lot of corruption going on. Employees are overworked, mistreated and disrespected. For a company that believes so strongly in "integrity and respect for people", the Winslow site shows the exact opposite of this. It is such a toxic place to work, I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. It is inhumane how people are treated. On a scale from 1-10, I give it a 0.

I interned there over the summer. They flew me out to the location to meet people for a week, and then worked remotely the rest of the summer.  I felt like I had a great applicable project that would actually benefit the company. However, working remotely, I would say I was stood up on meetings 80% of the time, without even a message for them to let me know they couldn't make it. It put me in a difficult situation to succeed. Overall, I was happy with the experience I gained at the end of the summer.  The HR Team did not check in with anyone about return offers by the date they stated. I understand they were downsizing at that time, and that could have atleast been transparently communicated as to why we were not hearing back. 

When Elanco absorbed this facility, everyone there should have been let go, or at the very least placed back on probation. There is in fighting, constant complaint with no solution, building is in disrepair (which should have been fixed day one, considering it needs to be a sterile facility). No leadership within teams, teams don't communicate, and there isn't enough support staff for the managers to actually be involved in their labs. They are stuck doing 40-60 hours of paperwork a week, of course they aren't going to have time to actually supervise.

Major management changes are needed, and many of the original staff needs to be removed, there is no retraining the habits they have ingrained.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The knowledge I acquired. There were plenty of intelligent people there who taught me an abundance of lessons both in life and the workplace. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Keeping up with the workload I would say could be a positive stress in which I participated. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Just like anywhere, if honesty and hard work are given, success is yours to take. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Focusing on the positive, you usually knew how your day would progress. I was lucky enough to have supervisors who cared for their employees.
