Ellis Medicine

Ellis is a community hospital that has in the last ten years become a very different organization.  I am concerned about the direction it is headed in, and hope the very best for its outcome.  My search for progress and advancement at this time, is not available due to the status of the organization.  There are some wonderful people that I have worked with over my career at Ellis, and I have continued to be hopeful that things will turn around.  I am grateful to have had opportunities to grow my career experience over the years; having served in management, both clinical and in Information Technology, which has broadened my ability to offer a vast knowledge base going forward in many new opportunities.

I would have to say my challenge was in watching the deterioration of what once was a revered community hospital.  Old culture that remains in place, has created a significant amount of barrier for forward movement; which is imperative for survival in the healthcare environment we now face. I have enjoyed building relationships, and being a part of restoring hope and positive attitudes from what became a staff that felt forgotten and disconnected from the mainstream of the organization, to an engaged group of professionals who are ready and willing to re-engage and to be part of the solution.  I am a firm believer in "..the right person for the right job..".  Perhaps this will be the solution so sorely needed.

I’ve had a very positive experience working at Ellis Medicine. One of the things that stands out most is the strong sense of mission—there’s a genuine commitment to serving the community and expanding access to care in meaningful ways. That purpose carries through across departments and makes the work feel impactful.

From a professional standpoint, I’ve appreciated the opportunity to collaborate with talented, dedicated colleagues who care deeply about what they do. There’s a culture of teamwork and problem-solving, especially in high-pressure situations, that brings out the best in people. Leadership is engaged and, in my experience, open to thoughtful ideas and communication.

Ellis is also an organization that is evolving. Like many healthcare systems, it faces challenges, but there is a clear focus on improving processes, investing in key service lines, and strengthening patient care. Being part of that forward momentum has been rewarding.

Overall, it’s a place where you can grow, contribute, and feel connected to something larger than yourself.

What is the best part of working at the company?
At the Belanger School of Nursing we change lives and educate the next generation of RNs. We have a talented group of faculty and staff who support students' learning.

We work hard every day to establish creative learning experiences and enable student success

The Belanger team works well together, supporting each other and the students. We have created an environment of excellence in education.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Connecting with Belanger faculty, staff, and students. Reviewing curriculum and policies to create an inclusive learning environment. Collaborating with Ellis Medicine departments to establish relationships and support outstanding clinical partnerships.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Ellis has a very caring and compassionate culture.  High quality healthcare care is number one priority at Ellis.  
There is strong support for employees that want to grow in their career; the tuition reimbursement program is great.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working in healthcare can be stressful - but Ellis offers a lot of resources for selfcare.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
As a smaller community hospital, Ellis offers a work environment where employees truly feel a sense of belonging.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Always busy - always able to do something that has a positive impact on the life of others.  Chaplains are always busy providing for the spiritual care needs of patients, families and staff.

Workplace culture well diversified.   Typical day usually consist of being short staffed with extra pressure to get everyone’s work done. Pay low with yearly 2%  across the board raises  if approved for that year. Management placement is political, job titles, duties and hours change as they feel needed instead of having enough staff, under the guise that it’s allowed if there’s a need. Minimal employee recognition or positive praise. Directly steered away from agreeing to Union and not willing to protect employees even though they claim zero tolerance for patient verbal abuse or physical threats.  Many jobs lost from unvalidated patient complaints.

The doctors and Nurses were great to work with and the job was great, However I was never given a lunch since I worked in the emergency room 2nd shift. There was also never a supervisor available or the proper coverage to give any of us a lunch break. I learned many things while working there and have a great deal of knowledge in the admitting field because of my employment there. The hardest part of the job was seeing the trauma that would come in whether it was gun shot wounds to stabbing useless suicides and the people that were so worried about their love one. The most enjoyable part was interact and getting to know many people from many cultures.

I was a call center rep/switch board operator. That department went under new management about a year and a half ago and the manager is cluelessssss as to what the job entitles. Jan Hunt changes protocols and procedures for the entire hospital, practices, and the physicians. she cares more about the gossip in the office than fully staffing her department. It does not help that the director is her best friend and covers for her. Most of the operators are leaving and the ones that are staying have no choice but to stay and the rest take bribes from the manager. that department is so stressful and has become a circus  and there is no room for improvement. I would not recommend anybody to go work in that department.

Overall I have loved my experience at Ellis- I love the people I work with more then anything. Management and administration is blind and make horrible decisions that effect the whole institution negatively. Every simple job requires a degree it seems, they will take a degree in culinary arts to fill a position that requires medical knowledge over a person with a lot of experience in medical field or someone that has been employed by their institution and knows the culture. It is sad, the place is going down the drain due to the degree requirements for entry level jobs.

Ellis Medicine definitely grew worse in the 6 years that I worked there.  Perhaps partly because it is a union shop, the management and hourly employees didn't really work together, it was always more a "us vs. them" mentality with everything that happened.  Senior management was very much about the bottom line, and put alot of pressure on the staff to please the patients, without providing them with the tools and equipment necessary to actually do so. 
On the plus side, benefits at Ellis are more generous than at some other hospitals in the area, particularly in the area of paid time off.  Health insurance etc. about standard for the area.  

Ellis does not pay their employees a competitive wage. Therefore they cannot keep employees and as a result they are extremely short staffed all the time. Patient ratios are unacceptable and unsafe. Lower management does not stand up for their employees. Upper management cares about money. There’s lots of fighting between departments. I experience a lot of disrespect from other departments, from HR and from management. HR/Upper management look out for themselves. They do not care about their employees. They’re in big financial trouble, I’d go  somewhere else.
