In this job market Erik's is failing. Low pay, sub par benefits and it's really hard to secure a bike at a discount which is one of the only reasons to work here.

Work Life Balance is pretty good, you get to ride or ski/snowboard with some cool people that are also into it. 

Management does not listed to even the most experienced employees, this is true at the shop level as well as the "warehouse" level. No amount of shop, industry or life experience will persuade anyone to listen to you if your title is less than theirs. 

It's easy to get promoted to Assistant Manager or Assistant Service Manager but those jobs come with little training and are like $13/hr jobs. 

Mostly job culture is good, but there is also a culture where store managers are afraid of getting a bad google review so they will never support or back up an employee getting abused by a customer. On top of that store managers will never take the time to train or build you up as an employee, instead blaming any downfalls on their subordinates. 

Bottom line, support your staff and live up to your "best industry training" claims


On a typical day, we have a workload of bicycles to repair that should be completed by the end of the day. This allows for minor repairs to be completed on the same day, typically within a couple of hours. 
Co-workers are very friendly and easy to get along with while working. A few have become good friends outside of work, which helps make work life easier. 
Management is strict when they want to be and not always conforming to the rules they require of others. I would describe management as a boss, not as a leader.
The most difficult part of the job would be the hours and lack of adequate benefits for full time employees. The inability to get weekends off is frustrating and time off request process is often unfair. Being a healthy lifestyle supporting industry, I feel that the health benefits should be better and more comprehensive.

A typical day depending on what position you hold is basically receiving and producing product in excellent condition to send to the stores. Building bikes as fast and accurately as possible.
I learned a lot about the sport of biking and the community in general. It was also my first time doing piece work and found it to be challenging and rewarding.
My fellow employees are a great bunch people. Driven, passionate, and fun people across the board.
The hardest part of the job is the short season and the constant threat of layoffs.
Management is fair and considerate for the most part, witch as an employee is all you can ask for.
The most enjoyable part of the job is the people. When co-workers become friends, it makes work that much more enjoyable.

Gives you an opportunity to meet and speak with new people on a regular basis. The people that work here are definitely knowledgeable and love what we do. The bike industry is a hard industry to get in to, but once you have the appreciation you thought you had for riding, boarding, or skiing is pushed to a new level. I loved my position because of the regular responsibilities and unpredictable circumstances you can be in. Having been trained for several aspects of this job, you are fully prepared to answer questions that new and experienced cyclists have.

Honestly, I loved my job, and still do. It's a lifestyle job, not a money maker, so if you're goal is high pay then idk why you chose a bike shop. The management is definitely compensated well, but there's a low turn over rate for that so good luck securing a position unless you plan to relocate. The management in Kansas City is some of the best, the customers are all amazing, and overall the teams feel like a team. I loved coming to work everyday and seeing my co-workers because at the end of the day we all had at least one thing in common and that was riding. The place is definitely what you make of it though. Work hard and you'll be paid fair.

I drove the truck and as the main liaison between the warehouse and shop managers.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Bald truck tires in Minnesota winters that they choose to not repair.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Incompetence is rewarded, "it's always been that way" is the motto.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Load a boxtruck, drive 5 days a week in all conditions, unload, repeat.

Worked there for many years in several locations. Overall it was a great experience for a great company. The owner is a truly nice guy and even the president has his moments. Most staff are fun and easy going. Some upper management types should have been let go years ago, but you'll get that at just about anywhere. 

Erik's will work hard to help you advance to store manager level. Then grind you until you are bone. Raise are yearly inflation. That is not a raise. 
Corporate has a big disconnect to store, which can case a lot of frustration. The best thing at Erik's are the people you meet, fellow snowboarder / cyclist / skiiers etc, who love the sport and want to help other enjoy the sport. 

The employees that work there are really fun to work with and when the store is a little slow it isn't boring. Like most retail stores though the store can get very busy. When it comes to a store like Eriks that sells high end merchandise you really need to know your product otherwise you'll run into more rude customers and you won't have success here.

People have worked there for 6 years without any kind of raise. They just want you to build bikes really fast and then the drop the point values. All of a sudden a bike that used to take 45 min now has to be built in 30. Bikes are getting more complicated and it seems like their employees are getting taken advantage of.
