Farm Bureau Insurance

Had my manager quit at the beginning of the year. I filled in the gaps for six months, including fixing the budget he left incomplete, and the inventory he never started. Managed vendors, maintained a schedule for PTO, and handled management level needs including training and onboarding, all in addition to all of my regular responsibilities. I even completed the budget for the year after I left, and documented a hardware rotation plan that extended out five years.  When they finally posted the manager's job, I was passed over due to a "lack of management experience" despite the team functioning successfully for six months. 

When I hired in, the company touted "current employee first" culture for open management positions. I was allowed to apply for the position only after it was opened to the public, and then was interviewed in a group setting by my peers "for practice" and was almost immediately told I wasn't actually being considered. After receiving this news and following the start date of the new manager, I stopped performing the management level tasks and faced a public reprimand, on an open meeting in front of my peers as well as team members from two other departments, when they fell behind and caused an outage. This was the final straw for me and caused me to seek employment elsewhere.

As a final snub, every other employee who was operating at my position level was promoted to "Senior" as a "going away present" from the previous manager. This included those with 10 or more years less experience than myself and no advanced degrees. I found this out when the new manager was hired as he made it a point to put all of their promotions in the departmental bulletin to congratulate them. 

A Typical Day at Work
As a new CSC Representative at Farm Bureau, my typical day involves assisting members with policy inquiries, payments, and account updates. I’m still learning the systems, but each day brings a variety of calls that help me grow more confident in the role. It’s fast-paced but manageable with support.

What I’ve Learned So Far
I’ve learned the importance of listening closely, showing empathy, and following procedures accurately. The training has been detailed, and I’ve also realized how crucial it is to take good notes and rely on system prompts to stay on track. The learning curve is real, but I’m eager and open to feedback.

Management
Management has been approachable and encouraging. They’ve created a space where asking questions is welcomed, which I really appreciate as I build my knowledge base. I feel like they genuinely want to see new hires succeed.

Workplace Culture
The culture feels team-oriented, professional, and member-focused. Colleagues have been supportive and willing to share helpful tips. There’s an emphasis on doing things the right way, not just the fast way, which helps build trust and confidence.

Hardest Part of the Job (So Far)
The hardest part so far is learning to navigate multiple systems while keeping up with call flow and giving accurate information. Balancing empathy with efficiency is also something I’m still developing.

Most Enjoyable Part of the Job
The most enjoyable part is being able to help people — especially when I can resolve something that matters to them. Even the small wins feel good. I also enjoy how much I’m learning every day — it’s empowering.

I was the front desk receptionist & serviced all client accounts and handled the manual processing of all 6 agents client applications for insurance. Answered phones, made changes, processed payments, made bank runs/deposits daily. I learned how to do my job efficiently w/feedback from fellow coworkers/management. My coworkers were great, management was great - esp as they all came to see me when I had an accident & broke my neck and couldn't go back to work for 3 months. They were great about giving me a chance to come back, I started back full time, but went to part time & eventually had to resign as the pain and pain meds were just too much to do my job w/a clear head. I didn't think it was fair to them. Hardest part of the job was one coworker who was high strung and would get angry over little things, but I understood as they were under a lot of pressure to meet their #'s & it happens. Most enjoyable again: coworkers...we'd go to happy hour together all the time & had a great time - even the 'difficult coworker' was fun outside the office! I even went to her house for her son's b-day party & met her husband & had a great time. So all in all the job was wonderful...and I really do miss it a lot.

I managed the office along with taking care of building issues.  I trained and worked with 1 to 5 new agents.  Number varied from time to time if an agent did not succeed.  They were a pleasure to work with.  I processed client files, took phone calls, processed changes and checked for accuracy when complete.  Some days were very busy and other days would be extremely slow.  Set up office for proper paper flow.

Hardest part of the job was keeping up with new policies and procedures which could change weekly.  Also attending training in other cities across the state up to 6 times per year.  Also, had to take Continuing Education classes to keep my license current per State rules.

I tremendously enjoyed my clients when they would stop in or call with questions, make a payment or make a change to their policy.  It was because of them that I became good at what I did.

I got along very well with my Supervisor.  Whenever I had an issue or just wanted to say Hello, I could just call her.  (She does not live in this area.

I loved working at Farm Bureau! Only left to stay home with kiddos and hope to work there again one day. Being valued as a person and not just a worker was something that I never had until I was working with FB. Knowing that I mattered and my personal strengths and skills brought value to the table was evident there. 
Having open communication to allow for cultivation of ideas and high morale was the everday experience. Having support and understanding even when errors were made provided me with so much more than just work experience; I was given examples of real people being in management and being on the SAME team no matter what level someone's job was. Not saying that every department was like this but seeing that level of respect changed my expectations for all future employment. 
The only thing that was difficult while I was there was the traditional view on flexibility and having to be physically in the building everyday; however, this has since changed and many employees work remotely now. 

A typical day included answering the phones, initiating the sales process for auto & home policies.  It required a lot of research with home office regarding company policy, and coordination with adjusters.  
The agent was out of the office 50% of the time, so I enjoyed the independent work environment, managing the activities in his absence.  
I did not have coworkers in this job, but had a lot of contact with other agents' offices and home office by phone, and was able to establish connections with them. I was so impressed with the service and helpfulness I received from Home Office.
What I enjoyed most was working independently, and having a flexible work schedule. However, I would have liked the agent to be somewhat more engaged in the process.

I learned about yet another industry.

I've worked here a year. It's a very safe, stable career for a mainframe cobol person. It's an old system that runs very smoothly and rarely abends. The benefits are excellent. The salary is well below local market. The mainframe software tools are average at best. The other employees and management are very professional and friendly, but there is that old fashioned spy-on-the-employees mentality. All things considered, I plan to stay until retirement. 10-20% more salary would change "very good" to "excellent".

I have enjoyed working with Farm Bureau Insurance. They have trained me well. They are the reason that I want to continue working with insurance or other receptionist work.

 I have learned how to make policy changes, write down quotes, submit new business applications, take payments, and operate different office machines.

The management is fantastic and very easy to work with. My supervisor is great and always checks in to see how I am doing.

The agents and staff are great to work with. We work together as a team with strong communication skills and a supportive atmosphere.
 
The hardest part of the job is that I wish they would provide me with more hours each week. I like consistency and its really hard to do that when I am on call.

I worked as an Insurance Specialist for a period of 6 months. I was the main admistrative clerk that handled all incoming phone calls for agents, adjusters and other staff, the processing and delivery of the office mail, interviewed insureds while processing insurance claims, adding and deleting items to their policies, printing out insurance cards, scheduling appointments with insurance agents and assisting new insurance shoppers with insurance queries as needed. This was an 8am to 5pm position and I often worked after five to complete last minute requests from insurance customers to exceed the overall satisfaction of our insureds.  

Every morning started with turning on computers, while waiting for them to boot up, we had a daily office meeting over coffee.  Learning the business from the bottom up, I was taught by a office manager that had been with the company for 23 years.  She started her job with Farm Bureau not long after the office in Iberville opened.  I worked on side of a small but very deviated team consisting of a agency manager, a agent, a office manage, and a adjuster. Our office team were there for each other during business hours and otherwise during deaths of family.
