Farm Credit Mid-America

Farm Credit Mid-America is an excellent place to start or continue a career.  The Louisville office is consistently rated one of the best places to work in Kentucky within its division (large businesses), and this reflects the quality of the culture, work, and people in this place.

Anyone looking through these reviews will see that changes have been taking place over the past few years, and they have been difficult for almost everyone, but particularly those in sales roles.  Those roles are really what make Farm Credit what it is, and for that reason, it's understandable that people are resistant and upset by change.  On the other hand, the vast majority of staff have remained and while changes continue, they press on and discover that things are easier/simpler now then they were before.

Working in Louisville is decidedly different, but it is our job to support the sales staff, and so these changes impact us as well.  Farm Credit is the sort of place where your purpose matters.  The tasks and projects you work on day-to-day have lasting impact on not only the association but the rural community.  

The things that make a job satisfying have little to do with your pay, benefits, or what you can wear to work.  Instead, you look for purpose, the ability to think for yourself in accomplishing the mission, and getting rewarded for thinking outside of the box.  I have personally experienced all that here.

I've heard Farm Credit Mid-America called a 'unicorn' company, and I think that's a fair statement.  Look at the things that make all the best companies you've heard of "different" or "great", and you'll find those things here too.

I seem to be getting a number of friends reaching out to get the scoop on whether they should work at Farm Credit Mid-America.  Quite a few jobs have opened up due to the changes that have taken place, which has left quite a few positions to be filled.
Four or five years ago, I would have said it is great.  Variable compensation hadn't been reduced, and we were the #1 Farm Credit association in America.  Fast forward to today, and the new CEO that was promoted 5 years ago, is making wholesale changes.  Closing credit units to consolidate them to Louisville, business analysts quitting and not wanting to move, new computer systems that do not work, and a total revamp of the roles of each employee.  Ag lenders are now door to door sales people, while the office staff have been assigned the role of taking care of all loan details, even closing.
The compensation and benefits are great, but it's getting to the point that one really has to weigh the cost for what is being asked by middle management (which is coming down from upper management).  I would strongly consider other opportunities until some of these issues get sorted out, and hopefully they will.

When I began working at FCMA several years ago I thought I wanted to stay forever. However with the new  leadership, the company has morphed into a machine that no longer resembles the close knit co-op that was there to serve rural residents and farmers. The attitude is no longer customers first, it is profit and numbers. Everything is tracked from the profit you make off struggling Joe Farmer to your lunch breaks. It's a frustrating thing to experience. The CEO and management have lost track of the actual reason FCMA was chartered and instead seem to be readying this co-op to go public. The organization also switches direction with the blink of an eye. Three years ago FCMA was building new offices to serve customers but just as quickly decided to shut down several the past year. Sad to see. People are no longer people and are just numbers. The sense of community is gone.  Training is fluff, with many trips to corporate but nothing is actually taught that you need to know for day to day operations. Manuals are vague and job aids as well. Audit is subjective.   Many leaders make decisions with no idea how it affects the employees doing the actual jobs. Too many chiefs.

Working for the Farm Credit System is an experience that is hard to describe as in may institutions you are a mere number stuck in the mix of a farm cube paid to keep your head down as you go through the motions. This is not what you get when you work for the Farm Credit, and more specifically Farm Credit Mid-America, instead, during the hiring process you are not only interviewed but you are also allowed and more importantly encouraged to interview the company. Upon your start date you are treated as though you are part of the family and the red carpet is lined for you! Benefits are fantastic and the culture cannot be beat! Change does occur within the institution, however, changes are well planned and thought out and are for the benefit of the whole to ensure processes are up to date and that the meaning behind your work is captured. Management is supportive and encourages initiative and innovative thinking. Teamwork is encouraged and fostered and your Co-workers really do want you to succeed.

The environment at Farm Credit Mid-America is very flexible and fun.  They believe in personal development and are committed to helping you attain your career goals.  They strongly believe in work/life balance--I've even had several members of leadership mention to me that they do not expect responses to emails after business hours and will make sure that I don't feel that I have to respond to emails outside of business hours.  

The best part of the job is the flexibility and the trust that leadership places in each employee.  You "own" your work and are allowed to manage your day.  You get great support from your leaders, too.

There are some members of leadership that are probably a bit more "progressive" in their thinking (i.e. allowing flexibility and personal time management) than others, but overall, I think the leadership is great.  

Compared to other financial institutions I've worked for, this place is AMAZING!  I no longer dread going to work!

    This was a fast-paced working environment. I helped answer/transfer incoming calls and assisted customers at the front counter. I collected financial information from customers and processed farm equipment and farm operating loans. I was also responsible for A/P for my branch as well as ensuring our advertising and public relations accounts were within budget. I contacted delinquent accounts and reported them to middle management.
    I learned many things during the 5-1/2 years of employment. Since my position was primarily working with farmers, I learned a lot about agriculture and the information needed to process a loan from the application to closing. I also learned how to handle dissatisfied customers, including those who were delinquent.
   I believe top management (CEO) had good values; however, the middle management was not successful in promoting those same values.
   I enjoyed working with the customers and helping them with their financial needs.

Extraordinary and supportive culture.  I’ve had all great leaders.  Great benefits and the customers are like no other.  Truly an honor to support our farmers and rural America. 

I was disappointed that although I was told I was eligible for rehire after taking advice from a leadership  conference to “taste test” and take advantage of different opportunities/positions that I’m automatically denied  from reapplying due to my movement between departments while I was employed.   No questions were asked as per my story on the matter, just assumptions.   I sure do miss leadership, customers, and the coworkers at FCMA. I should have never left the organization but followed advice from an EP conference and unfortunately regret it.  The job I transferred to post FCMA eliminated my position so I tried to go back; but they didn’t give me an option for an interview.  My hopes were that they’d be there for me as I had put so much into the company during my tenure.  

I would come in around 7:30 am, and literally work non stop until 5:00. They order lunch a lot which is nice, their is a lot of perks working here. Just know you have to work non stop to keep your head above water. I would come home after work and make dinner and have to log back in just to keep up. Its a very demanding job. My direct manager was a micro manager and would constantly watch what I was doing and go through my loans with a fine tooth comb. I am human and not perfect, so if you are looking for something its not going to be perfect.

The leadership that once valued the employees and the mission to serve farmers and rural residents has completely lost that vision. They now value turning themselves into a large bank, devoid of relationships or added value. In the effort to grow, they have silenced anyone with any amount of ambition or independent thought. If they are not silenced, they are let go. Horrible work environment where employees are controlled by fear and intimidation, and it grows worse daily.

The main problem at FCMA is the management and culture! Most leaders are promoted based on relationships (nepotism, buddy system) not skills and competency. There are few good leaders but the vast majority have no experience managing people or leading departments! Also, we try to promote this culture of inclusion, coaching and open doors but the moment you speak out your career is over and you'll be marginalized and reprimanded for speaking against management or giving feedback to leaders or peers.
