I have worked at ForTec for nearly a decade and have had the fortunate opportunity to work up the corporate ladder. I started with the company as a Laser Technician and have since transitioned into a tenured role as a Territory Manager. ForTec has been supportive of my ambitions to navigate the corporate structure finding new opportunities for me including a few geographical relocations.  

As a technician, and just as with almost any job in the surgical industry, the hours can be unpredictable. Some days can be long and tedious and others can be quite the opposite. At its core, we are helping to provide surgeons the most cutting edge technology to treat their patient's. If a candidate has a transparent understanding of and embraces the day to day uncertainties of the technician position, I think most anyone will find it rewarding and fulfilling. 

As a Territory Manager the company provides you autonomy to manage your territory as you best see fit. As the company continues to grow it is inevitable it will take on more of a big company, corporate feel. However, in large part it has stayed true to its entrepreneurial roots. ForTec provides surgical technologies and technology is always evolving. The future success of the company and in particular the TM role will largely depend on ForTec's ability to continue to offer the latest and greatest technology to its customers. 

It is impossible to outpace imperfection and ForTec has its own challenges just like all companies. There have definitely been good days and bad days but in my time with ForTec, the good have far outweighed the bad.

If you are a medical device rep, the travel and highly changing schedule due to medical facility scheduling can be brutal, no matter where you go. It's not a job to do if you're solely responsible for children, etc. ForTec is a nation-wide company and I can only speak to my little territory, but my manager does their absolute best at trying to make fair schedules for our team, not overwork anyone, and accommodate and help resolve issues that come up as part of life. Some territories are just busier than others and managers are not all the same so your experience may vary. 

Growth is somewhat limited (there's just not that many roles to fill) but whenever I have expressed desire to learn a new technology I have been supported and encouraged by my superiors. The company has invested in support staff and technology like work phones and proprietary software to make our jobs easier.  Pay is low on the device-rep scale but most of the technologies are incredibly simple to operate and the personal responsibility of the reps is low so I consider it a fair wage. It can be a pretty difficult job but I personally enjoy being able to support surgeons, medical staff, and their patients, and hopefully make their day a little easier. 

Loved my job at ForTec. The management is completely disorganized and expects the impossible. They do not listen when concerns are expressed that are inhibiting (or would make it easier) the ability to achieve daily job duties. They allow employees to slack off or incorrectly perform tasks. Goals that are completely unachievable are set after asking the team what would be reasonable to achieve. Supposedly they are restructuring and I hope they listened to the team before initiating anything. They should have kept the other manager but instead ran her out by being completely rude-walking past and not even acknowledging their existence. Then they brought in a manager that had absolutely no idea how to do any of the team’s responsibilities let alone their own. This person also would not listen and their praises were sang by leadership. I hear that manager left after a year and a couple months-it was too much for that person as they did not have any medical collections history, nor any type of leadership skills that would be required to successfully run a team. Beware if you take a job their. Four people from AR quit in two months…also, the systems they use are archaic 

Typical start is around 4-5am, driving on average 2 hours away from the office. Then working cases until mid day. They’ll tell you that you’ll only average about 30 hours a week but it will be closer to 50 hours. 

Management is a joke. They do not care about you at all. They will not listen to you and if you point out issues you’ll become a target. You can work a 20+ hour day and only
 get a “that sucks”, not even a thank you. 

Pay raises for learning new platforms are a joke. Managers will try to avoid getting employees paid what you’re worth. If you ask for a raise outside of what they offer they will look for reasons to fire you. 
 
Only people with zero life outside of work will enjoy this job.

They’ll tell you that you can say no to ridiculous travel request but turn around and threaten to fire you when you actually say no. The company chews people up and spits them out. You’re just a body to them. Then they will complain about the turnover rate like they can’t do anything to help it. 

Territories will be understaffed for years and they will just run you into the ground before hiring help. Poor communication is common. They will blame you even when it’s managements fault. 

Improving communication and leadership at ForTec Medical would help create a more efficient and supportive work environment. One area that could improve is clearer communication about schedules, assignments, and expectations. When employees receive timely updates and consistent information, it helps reduce confusion and allows everyone to stay prepared for daily responsibilities. Regular team check-ins or brief meetings could also help keep staff informed and aligned with company goals.

Leadership can also improve by being more visible and approachable to employees. When leaders take time to listen to concerns, provide guidance, and support their teams, it builds trust and respect in the workplace. Providing constructive feedback and recognizing employees for their hard work can also improve motivation and morale.

In addition, investing in structured training and professional development would help employees feel more confident in their roles. Strong communication and supportive leadership ultimately help teams perform better and strengthen the overall success of the organization.

the top two responsibilities that you will have as a technician at fortec medical will be these: waiting and driving. so many procedures are delayed and we are expected to be there an hour before the procedure begins, that about 70-80 percent of your day is spent waiting for a procedure to begin. The latest experience that Ive had has been that the equipment failures have been overwhelming and way too frequent, which is a very frustrating situation to be a part of. Because basically the only reason that you are there is so that the equipment will assist in the procedure, and when it fails on you it is very embarrassing and you get to walk out of the operating room looking like a failure. 

Lots of crazy hours. Be prepared to wake up at 3 or 4 am to go load a 600lb machine to drive an hour in the snow and then unload it and push it through a huge hospital. Then the dr could add cases, take all day and you drive home and have little time to yourself. Great PTO, but you don’t get your schedule until the night before so to ensure you can make personal appointments you may have to take a day off. Raises are minimal but they brag about their profits. You get a work phone, that’s a perk I guess. No opportunity for advancement unless you want to move into the corporate office in Cleveland or a completely new state. But still, there are only a few positions offered. Christmas bonus- I’m still trying to remember what it is- I think taxes eat it up by time the check hits my bank account. If you like changing schedules , if you don’t mind working with heavy equipment, if you don’t mind driving, then this job may be for you. Pay is decent, but expect to make that practically forever.

ForTec Medical's motto is 'Forwarding Technology'. They are the largest privately owned supplier of portable lasers used in surgical procedures. They have a national presence. On a corporate level, it seems like a very good, cohesive and forward thinking place to work. When one returns to one's area of responsibility, things are far different. There's a very serious lack of leadership at the regional level. Managerial oversight is either overbearing or barely apparent. The company does not value it's field employees in the way that it should considering that without the workers in the field, there would be no company. 

ForTec has been my home for over 12 years. The company growth is tremendous on the back of hard working employees led by a fantastic leadership team. Throughout the company is the original founders entrepreneurial spirit as most roles require you to be a self-starter and not have someone constantly looking over your shoulder. Because the bulk of ForTec's business is serving patients in the hospital setting, the pace can be fast and days can be hectic and unpredictable. This is just the nature of working in healthcare and specifically when supporting surgical procedures. But you also have the opportunity to really change and improve people's lives with your service.

Embarrassing to work for this company. They rent equipment out of spec because all they care about is the number of cases they get. I would never allow surgery on my family with this company.
