They have a great mission, food pantry, volunteers, and Frisco community.

However, the overall work environment is toxic, which comes from the top down. The agency is run very hierarchically, which is strange for a small non-profit. Staff often feel unsupported by management while also feeling micromanaged and stifled. Things are done in an antiquated way. Management does not listen, implement ideas from staff, or understand the need for updated technology.

Management made some very poor hiring decisions for people in supervisory positions that hurt company moral. None of the staff they managed were involved in the hiring process.

There is very little to no upper mobility. I was told directly by the Executive Director that I was not old enough to move into a supervisory position.

Staff is overworked and not compensated for it. I was regularly expected to work late nights and weekends to accomplish tasks to meet the expectations. There is no Flex Time, PTO credit, or overtime pay. Maintaining a healthy work / life balance is difficult.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Helping families get back on their feet. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Being micromanaged. Antiquated environment. Lack of innovation and trust. No room for growth. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stifling if you are creative. Executive director is unreachable. Dress code is conservative. No one listens to ideas and if you want to do something in a more efficient way, it’s not accepted. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it is their motto. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very structured. Lunch only 30 minutes. Best part is the food pantry. And the resale shop.

Emptied bins of clothes or more that were donated by the public it was very disgusting.
The bins were always dirty and smelled do to the clothes and other items that were in them. Once emptied had to clean them. Sorted the clothes based on womens, children, men and infant. Toys and housewares to other dept.
Hardest part of job was the heat in the summer no air conditioning. Knowing the good deed I was doing for the people of the city was satifactory in itself makes you feel awesome inside.
Coworkers were great.

The agency has an antiquated system and no clear policies to determine which clients receive help. One case manager might provide financial assistance to a client when another client with similar needs may be denied because their case manager had a different opinion. Director was heard on numerous occasions making derisive comments about clients being served calling them entitled and other derogatory comments. Dress code is conservative. Overall it was just a terrible place to work as evidenced by the high turnover of staff.

The front line workers are great.

The leadership and management of the agency are not good.

Stressful when having to deal with leadership and management.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Seeing clients and trying to meet demands of management.

The purpose of helping people is secondary to providing a well paid position for the executive director. A lot of what is accomplished there is for the same 35-40 clients. The community is very generous but misled as to what is truly needed or going on. The small staff has a tremendous turnover due to poor leadership. 

The organization is wildly understaffed so the workload given to existing staff is over the top. As a result of the extreme workload, the work life balance is poor. I believe this is why the staff turnover rate, outside of the department of directors, is so high.

Harsh work environment to stay at long term. Get the experience and move on or find a different opportunity sooner than later or this job will consume your joy due to unrealistic and unconventional expectations/demands and outdated methods of functioning. 

The hardest part is always having a good selection of food for our clients.  Since the food is donated, sometimes we don’t have basic needed items like cleaners and bathroom items.  We take donations from anyone that wants to come by.
