A typical day at my internship intailed me coming in, and working on various projects-from organizing various maketing collateral pieces to distributing flyers about blood drives, interacting with people at health fairs, helping to generate questions for events and also helping to research questions to go on the social media site. I had an assignment to come with a project of my choice during my time here, so I went for something I was passionate about-- health and wellness (everything that GBMC stands for). The Womens health Services at GBMC holds several lecture series (FREE) for women in the community and within the hospital- called a Time for Me!. The lecture I was most interested in was the "Eating for Wellness" series where GBMC's very own phenomenal dietician and an endocronologist would give a presentation. I thought of a way to incorporate my marketing skills and health promotion skills I had been acquiring over these past few months to benefit the women who attend this lecture. I decided to create collateral pieces with information relating to eating for wellness. I created (from scratch-making use of my publisher and research skills) recipe cards, common myths, and tips to move more at work. Since I'm not a dietician, I contacted the dietician who would present at the lecture to ask him if we could work together on this. He agreed to it. By the time I was through with my project, another dietician at GBMC offered to help me and was extremely resourceful to ensure that everything I had on the collateral pieces were accurate and represented GBMC. Everyone here is extremely nice and willing to go out of their way and assist you (despite their busy schedules). 

The hardest part of the job is not having enough time to really develop more relationships with individuals within the hospital and in the community (since this is a semester internship). Other than that, the challenges I've faced have taught me huge lessons that I'll carry on to the next position(s) I hold in the future. 

My most enjoyable part of this job is working with the marketing department to achieve a goal. Working on my project and others enabled me to realize the importance of teamwork. I love the fact that the mutual respect, passion, work ethic and professionalism flows from the top of the organizational chart all the way down to the last employee in the department. I've never experienced such an organizational culture where everyone is kind, respectful, helpful, and willing to go out of their way to help the other succeed in their endeaors.

When I originally applied to GBMC I applied for a unit secretary position because most of my past work experience was secretarial. When I was called in for interview they offered me a patient transport position. Because I was desperate I accepted the position of patient transport thinking I could advance switching the organization. 

I worked at GBMC for 8months. I loved working with the patients and even some of my coworkers. But as a patient transporter your looked down on, nurses and faculty have no problem expressing that they think were incompetent. Still I was always able to smile through all that and continue to work hard.

I was hit in the eye with pole from a broken bariatric bedside commode causing my eye to swell, turn red, affected my vision, and later black eye. Because the incident happened on a unit the charge nurse had to fill out an incident report and so do I. I went to my supervisor she was unconcerned, refuse to let me go to the ER.

Even after following protocol and I wasn't look to file a law suit, I was no longer put on the schedule when I came in for my regular time I was sent home by the supervisor who told me I had to meet with my Director. I never could reach my Director, I called human resources and still the wild goose chance continue.

When I finally was contacted by my director I was fired and told because no call no show which wasn't true. 

I was already disappointed because up until the incident I was getting praised for all my hard work from, nurses, Dr, patients..than to make matters worst I was given a bad reference to employers who were interested in hiring me.

Where to start.. the starting wages were above my expectations and is the highlight when just starting out. However, it slowly transitioned to being overworked. Overworked I mean, when you disclose your availability, they will schedule you all those days.. every week, and throw in a day that you never agreed to work. Managers just tell you what to do and wait for someone to be in their sight to tell them what to do. I wish they would help a little with the load since the host is the person actually going out to send the patient their food. It is time consuming and you have a lot of things to take care of and remember. And having to come back to the kitchen to deliver a 30 min late tray when the manager stood there the whole time waiting for someone to come back is very irritating and annoying, makes no sense. Oh, and when people call out, you better run out or take your time. We usually have six people on the clock (to do the whole hospital) but when two people call out, it's a nightmare. They didn't compensate for the loss of employees and you are running around like a dog. But they are "trying" (not really) to pretend they are trying to compensate. There are people who actually do their job and keep everything spotless and those few that don't do anything and you have to pick up their slack. On the positive (yes there are some), it's a chill environment, you have those coworkers that enjoy people and will welcome you day one. Management can be awesome and buy you food. Just be nice and do your job and the unit you're working on will make it easier for you.

Manager was great to work with and was a visionary but lacked the unbiased skills that a manager should have.  Human Resources was unsupported and biased towards the institution and was NOT helpful in assisting in problem solving my two concerns.  Two issues remained unresolved despite my desire to want to resolve them until the day I left.  About 80% of the time worked through lunch and about 60% of the time stayed late to complete the work.   Unsupported by the manager, medical director and office manager for all the positive work that was done.  Two other current employees feel the same way.  Was reprimanded for every little thing that you didn't do, should have done or DIDN'T know that you should do because you weren't instruction and there wasn't a departmental policy manual to use as a reference.  Had to work with a staff member that constantly was undermining my abilities and skills.  Liked all my co-workers except this person who was a bully and supported by my manager.  Best thing about the job was the patients that I worked with.  They gave me a lot of positive feedback and support about their care.  Good benefits, great facility overall but not this department from my perspective but patient care is excellent.  Many excellent staff that are caring and compassionate towards the patients.

Horrible management. It has been so long now I don't know if this is at all an accurate picture of the hospital in any way. I do know that morale was low when I was there. My supervisor worked 14 hours a day at a minimum. I was one of two Employee Health Nurses, charged with doing physicals for new hires, seeing all the injured employees, doing the FML, STD, LTD, workers compensation, OSHA forms, teaching classes, PPD skin tests for well over 500 volunteers, and I rarely worked less than 10 hours a day, and we never were paid overtime. 

After my counterpart left they just expected me to do her work as well as mine until I said I absolutely couldn't do it, and my supervisor backed me up. Then they brought an NP in to do the clinical part so I could do all of the FML, and disability stuff. After my supervisor left I tried to stick it out and lasted all of 6 weeks. But it wasn't all in vain, because I did meet three of the dearest friends I have ever known, two of them were my mentors in Occupational Health, and one in particular just took me under her wing and it is her that I thank for making me the Occupational Health Nurse I became.

Home care hospice. Very stressful job, maximum nursing caseload is 11.5? Ok 1/2 a person, whatever anyway we are consistently running at 15-18 patients working 9-11 hours daily forget a lunch break there isnt any time! Management very focused on "productivity" how many patients you see in a week versus how much time you spend with patients face to face, in return a lot of disatisfaction from patients and families that they are being rushed and not getting the support they need. Hospice aides STAY AWAY, honestly they are severely overworked, only get paid hourly and are costantly being shorted on their paychecks. Little to no recognition. No raises this year from Gilchrist nor GBMC. No way to get your complaints taken care of it seems everything is brushed under the carpet same management team for years who feel they are "untouchable". No use to complain. Unfair practices regarding holiday time or time off. Too many "favorites" with certain managers and "black sheep" that always seem to get more work put on them. I could go on and on.

GBMC  is learning how to include other cultures, along with how to address the LGBT community as well also embracing other authenticates, and differences in others cultures. 
  This comes from being in a secluded environment where you are considered being with your own. GBMC is growing and making great changes. Kuddo to you GBMC !! just continue to grow along with learning. . 
    Continue to open your heart, arms, to the overall changes. Yes!! GBMC is stepping up. There's a little hesitation,  however they are putting  there BEST foot forward . 
      GBMC is in the process of renovating the hospital entirely, which says they're creating  better attitudes,  better work ethics, better communication.  So come on and work with us to push towards the New change of the future. The NEW GBMC welcomes you. Then you can say  proudly " Thank you for choosing GBMC"... 

The unit is an extremely high volume unit with a shortage of  nurses.  I thoroughly enjoyed the work and caring for the patients.
My duties included:  Assess, evaluate, and prioritize patient care; implement physician orders; care for patient requiring fetal assessment and fetal monitoring; administer prescribed medications and monitor vital signs; monitor, record, and communicate patient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems; educate patients and families; provide age and culturally appropriate care; manage patient care in the operating room during and post cesarean delivery; maintain accurate, detail reports and records; monitor, record and report symptoms and changes in patient's conditions; provide consistent attention to patients and their babies

As a former employee, I can say my experience at GBMC was mostly positive, with a few areas for improvement. The hospital staff is dedicated, and there’s a strong sense of teamwork across departments, which made challenging days more manageable. The facility is well-maintained, and there’s a commitment to patient-centered care, which is a core part of the culture. I appreciated the ongoing training opportunities that helped me expand my skills and stay updated in the field.

However, like many healthcare settings, there were times when staffing felt stretched, which added to the workload and stress. Some areas could benefit from better communication between management and frontline staff, especially regarding scheduling and feedback. Overall, though, I’d recommend this hospital as a good place to work, with supportive colleagues and a clear focus on quality care. It’s a strong environment for those passionate about making a difference in healthcare.

GBMC is  good place to work for starters. I can't speak for all departments but there was really no room to move up the ladder, however, the pay would increase slightly over time. We were occasionally shown appreciation for our work by receiving free lunches and/or treats which was good. My biggest complaint is management. Management did not do well managing anything. You were constantly called on your days off because we were short staffed everyday.They would do anything just to keep the senior employees happy, even if it meant stepping over everyone else unfairly. New management came in and made things worse. Schedules were ruined, our work place rapidly changed, and patients were the unhappiest that I've ever seen(which made our job harder).  New management gave me the impression that they've never done this before and were constantly confused. If supervisors were better the job would be as well.
