Main takeaways on being employed with Gallagher:

- Management lacks foresight and is reactive in response to insurance reimbursement changes. Changes in company policy are implemented slowly and clumsily. There is a general lack of communication between management and field staff, and the company is not effective in standardizing company-wide procedures or processes. 

- In response to PDGM and a lack of referrals, therapists were told that we would need to travel further outside of established territories and take extra weekend call in order to sustain our caseloads.

- Nurses are unequivocally valued and prioritized over PT, OT, and ST. 

- Therapists' clinical judgement is not well respected unless it suits management's goals/expectations. 

- There are very few referrals for therapists, especially OT and ST. When you do receive referrals, management sets strict limits on the number of visits you are permitted to do. Because you get paid per visit, this really limits your earning potential. It also raises ethical questions regarding patient care. 

Whether you are a new grad or an experienced practitioner, I would not recommend working for this company. 

I worked for Gallagher for years, in the beginning i loved it but when covid came and went they became less patient centered and more money centered. Matter of fact completely about the money, they switch from per point compensation to "cases managed" god for bid a wound care pt turns daily, you only get paid for 1 visit that entire week. Say you have 16 pts and 10 of them are daily and 6 3x a week your working 10-12 hour days and they doc your pay cause you are not at their minimum of 19 cases managed. When you question your pay check and why it's short 90% of the time they ignore you or fire you. I was let go because i did not tell them i had a second job! 2WEEKS BEFORE CHRISTMAS, knowing i am a single mother of 4. The office staff is so clique and all family. They stopped giving us bonuses claiming that Highmark doesn't pay them correctly, The two people who run HR won't answer questions either and are told to send them to the owners son who ignores you for days if not weeks. Horrible horrible place to work but yet their motto is " we treat you like family" but literally only if your family!

What is the best part of working at the company?
They truly care about not only the patients that are served but also the employees are treated well and taken care of well.  They are not a large corporation with multiple layers - the owners are accessible available and open to needs and truly support the staff even in times of personal 'issues'.   They do lots of little things for the staff but its the little things that matter most and are personal.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
just making sure we get done what is expected - there is always a lot to do as we are healthcare and are 24/7 needs. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
it is very comfortable - as long as you do your job noone is micromanaging anything and treat you as a professional and an adult. they truly allow you to utilize your professional judgement to do what's right for the patient the company and yourself. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
every day is different as no 2 patients are ever the same!

GHHS values an individual's skill level, trusts his/her ability, and does not micro-manage, and as a professional, having that trust and respect is key to maintaining moral, providing great care and service to patients-clients, and giving your 'all' everyday which is the way things should be when we spend 40+ hours at work every week.  

I find the staff to want to work together and is apparent as there is no lack of communications.  

The owners are very good to each and every employee throughout the year in a multitude of ways. 

Its an honor and a privilege to be part of the "Gallagher Family" and would recommend working for Gallagher to those who want to work and take pride in what they do.

A typical day was setting out in the morning with your set schedule that you made the night before and it was totally crashed in a bout 2 hours from numerous calls and emails from the office staff about things we didn't do on our start of cares or discharges that need completed.  So, now your mind is so boggled with other knowledge that you cant think of what you need to do with your pts.  I provided emotional support to my pts and their families.  Some pts only have you as the nurse and look forward to you coming in that day for a visit.  At times, the job was so over whelming and that is not the kind of nurse I prefer to be.  I want to provide great care to my pts and it cant be done with your computer and cell phone going off all day.

In all the years of being a Registered Nurse I’ve never encountered a company where the employees were so mean, condescending and manipulative than when I worked for Gallagher Hospice.  Management will use your emotions against you, so do not tell them anything because they will try and gain your trust only for it to backfire in your face.  There were times where I’ve seen managers lie about facts to a nurses face, only to deny it later and blame it on them for not listening/ taking notes. 
Nurses are overworked, micromanaged, and when you ask for help they gaslight you and tell you that you just need better time management, however if their best Buddy works under them- they get away with everything and no one bats an eye. I still have trauma from the way I was treated at this place, please safe yourself the hassle and run.


Allows for autonomy and clinical judgement. Creating your own schedule allows flexibility. Lower paying than smaller agencies. No room for advancement

What is the best part of working at the company?
The team atmosphere and cooperation between everyone.   Excellent training.  They show real care for their patients and their families.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Some patients can be difficult and uncooperative.   But the help received from the nurses and team made it a totally worthwhile experience

Everyone works together as a cohesive team.  Care for their patients is the number one priority 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Early start seeing patients, and driving patient to patients.   Looking for signs of health issues and reporting to supervising nurses

Gallagher is family oriented to the owners everyone is related  and advancement in a position is for family and who they know personally no room for growth new positions go to family or their associates they will over work you having covering most of Allegheny county by yourself practically with no help had a covid patient never told me and I never got compensated for it either .  Real stingy with PPE equipment most times I bought my own .They bought new vacation homes with the grant .

I am a former employee of Gallagher Hospice who ultimately left due to the stressful working conditions and toxic executive leadership. I greatly enjoyed working as a hospice RN case manager and connecting with patients and their families. However, Gallagher Hospice's expectations for job duties, drive times, and charting meant I was working much longer than 40 hrs a week (I'd say on average I was working 50-60 hrs a week by the end). And while I loved working with my direct manager, I did not have faith in the hospice's executive director to advocate for her staff.
