Work hours are from 6am-10pm.  Get students up for breakfast, chores, and medications.  Make sure they are dressed properly for school and have all their books and homework.  While students are gone, we catch up on daily paperwork and any tasks that may need addressed rather urgently.  Prepare lunch.  Students arrived back to cottage for lunch and afternoon chores.  Walk them back to school for second half.  Again catch up on paperwork, and prepare the dinner meal.  Students return from school, we provide one on one daily feedback on behaviors good or bad.  Training for counselor parents was great, as we were kept abreast of any new changes within the residential treatment program.  Kept current on state mandated requirements for working with our troubled youth.  Students that routinely misbehaved had to be dealt with promptly, this takes time away from doing other fun things within the home.  It is great getting to know the clients and where they're from and any special foods they miss from home.  
Management set aside one day per week to check in on their youth.  Each home had a different day, these were called Team Meetings.  The treatment team would communicate any or all misbehaviors and actions taken for each assigned student to that home.  Sometimes the director would state critiques about cottage parent performance.
The hardest part of the job was communication.  Things would be agreed upon and instituted without passing the word around to the people who needed it.  Or if we had a question about a procedure often times the answer would be "Oh, we changed how we do that know..."
The most enjoyable part of the job is watching a young man grow and mature within the home.  There is a moment when he discovers for himself what he must do to be released from the program and get back home to his family and community.  There's your reward.  Now, whether or not he holds up to these learned skills  will be up to  him.

Transtitioned students from one building to another for lunch and gym. In almost all types of weather. Beautiful grounds to walk during warmer weather. 
Classwork and projects are given to students. Teachers and TA's (teacher aide/assistant) help students with their English, Math, Science, History..  but also help students with coping skills, communicating, managing school, relationships and life on a whole other level. 
Most of the students I worked with at GJR were, youth with special needs. Each class period was a different age group. Physically restraining a student is the worst/hard part of the job, I just hate having to take a physical route but it is necessary whenever the individual is too heighten and has shown to be a threat themselves or someone else.
I have heard and seen a lot of screwed up stuff from the youth while working at GJR but I never took any of it personally as the adult, as a human being, I always treated my students with respect even during rough times. This way they felt safe to come back down to baseline in a heightened situation and maybe they can process and move forward.
How you treat a student will define the type of relationship and trust you build. You need to be aware of your words and body language.  Students have triggers, others may not. Just be mindful, and actually take the time to learn who your students are. This makes the job bearable.
The most enjoyable part of this job was being able to witness growth and maturity in most of the youth I mentored and taught at GJR. 
I learned about coping skills, time management, de-escalation techniques, restraint techniques, paying attention to detail.. etc while working at GJR. Working at GJR is what you make of it and what you put into it.

Teacher break room could use an upgrade.

I have been a home-based case manager for about 4 years and am about to transition into a therapist role after completing my Masters program. During my interview, 4 years ago, I shared my goals to become a therapist. I was also very pregnant and expecting to have my child a month into beginning employment - and I have felt supported and encouraged every step of the way with accommodations and endless support. My supervisors have always been flexible and understanding; they've each taken the time to listen and care for me as a person. During personal crises and work crises, they were there without judgement to help. I am the provider I am now because of the staff and training opportunities I have had whilst working here. 

I have always been part-time and at times barely worked because of personal priorities, yet I have always felt fairly compensated and recognized for my work. Whether with verbal affirmations or bonuses. Even when I felt I was making little contributions, I was made to feel like I was a valuable team member. They are ALWAYS open to ideas on how to improve and take employee feedback to make actual changes! We once made passive complaints about difficulties navigating our monthly reporting system and they had IT add access buttons in the computer coding (I'm not a tech person but this was SO COOL to see made possible). 

My gratitude for them is endless. I feel pride when I am able to help other staff or new staff in the ways that I was helped. I will forever recommend GJR for their work environment and work we do with families. I don't doubt I'll be one of those staff members that get to say they've been here for decades.

So much to say, but I don't want to bore you honestly.  The rest of the SW/TTC reviews on this site say it all.  Despite the excellent benefit package GJR provides, there is little that can compensate for all the duties assigned to this position.  There is NO way that you can perform this job in 40 hours per week, despite what the QC officer says after performing an "audit" of job duties/performances.  They do expect documentation to be in on time and tell you that "since so and so can do it, so can you".  They DO communicate that "if you don't like it you can leave".... and that's exactly what I did.  Although I did express numerous times to my boss that I didn't think I could take it anymore and she convinced me to "hang in there".   I couldn't take any more of the 20 hour trips to court and then coming back to mounds of work that I was already behind on.  I honestly liked most of the unit directors.  I truly believed that they wanted to do more for us than they were "allowed", so most of the scrutiny and unrealistic expectation was not from them, but from higher up.  Good luck during State Assessments!  There is little room for advancement in this company.  There are a lot of people there with seniority and/or preferential status, sooo unless you get in really good with someone its not likely to happen for quite some time.  I really wanted to like working here.  its a beautiful campus, with lots of great people working, but my family means much more to me than just being able to keep the health benefits!  I had to follow my heart on this one.  Not worth the time if you have a family or any kind of life!

I worked with GJR PAC for about a year until I became licensed and transitioned to my desired career. I really enjoyed the work/life balance since you could pretty much make your own schedule (as long as you worked at least 4 hours a day M-F, you could flex your time to work different hours each day). This was super nice for things like appointments, and if you’re someone who likes to sleep in. I would typically work 10am-6pm. The families are definitely high-need and typically require at least two sessions per week,  but the caseloads range from around 8-10 families so it is manageable. The pay was also pretty good, and better than most mental health positions in the area. My immediate supervisor was amazing and very supportive. The only complaint I ever had was upper management as they tended to be finicky over every little detail, but showed very little interest in our clinical skills and the work we were ACTUALLY doing with our clients. Everything was about productivity and numbers (although, unfortunately, that’s nothing new in the mental health world). I was also told I would not be allowed to be re-hired since I “left on bad terms” because I provided exactly 4 weeks notice, and not a full month (I was short by two days). I was told 4 weeks was required at my start date and even my supervisor was surprised when she was told I couldn’t be rehired, but bad on me for not fact checking in the manual I guess? Overall not a bad experience, and I probably would have stayed much longer if I didn’t already have a career path in mind post-licensure. 

This place has amazing highs, and terrible lows. There are 100% favorites on campus, and I am one; so take my review with a grain of salt.
I love my job, my boss, and my kids, but I am not blind to the challenges of this company.
Due to low numbers of staff, things have been more stressful than usual. Direct care staff work very hard, but they do not feel supported. Positive changes are happening within administration but it is taking a while to trickle down. 
The kids we have gotten recently are challenging to work with, but when they are doing well, it is the most rewarding/prideful feeling one could experience.
I carry the story of my past and current kids with me, and I cherish my role with them everyday. That is the reason why I am here. To make a positive impact on their life.
People talk about “making a difference” all the time, but if you want to make a true impact on their lives during one of their hardest moments- this job is for you.
I consistently get phone calls from previous kids about how well they are doing and it brings me to tears every time and reminds me of why I do what I do.
This job is hard, and your experience will be based off the leadership you have around you. But it is 100% worth it and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. 
All together, this job is challenging but rewarding; ask for help when you need it, and PRIORITIZE self care. Do not make this job your life, but value your work when you are here.


When I came to GJR, I was leaving a company I had invested 7 years of my career because they were sure how to pay their bills and had considered rolling unpaid time off and asked me to take a voluntary demotion. I appreciate that GJR has financial stability to support helping professionals regardless of the changes in funding sources for services. Additionally, the streamlined structure to do the “paperwork” part of the job, easy access to paid ongoing training, and skilled supervisors with a positive teamwork culture makes staying a real treat. Plus, I really appreciate GJR offers salaried positions with strong benefits. I’ve been fortunate to have my own family grow since starting and GJR has allowed me to change my work role to accommodate working part time. For someone who wants to get a job or internship with hands on support and skilled supervision around experienced and positive people, I really encourage applying!

Honestly when I first hired on with GJR in Indiana, I anticipated this organization being a stepping stone to start off my career. Here I am, nearly 7 years later, and there's so many things that I love about the organization. The nature of the work is so hard, but the teams and leadership we have make it so worth it. One of my biggest fears going into the workforce was that I wasn't prepared the way I thought I was and that I would be so embarrassed any time I didn't do anything up to standard - however, literally any time I have fallen short or made a mistake in the time I've been with GJR has been viewed as a learning experience by all parties involved. Our leadership truly cares about each individual staff and their needs even beyond the job and do what they can to meet those needs as much as possible. We would not be able to provide the services we do without the fantastic team members and our leadership. 

The benifits are the only possitive part of this company. It is truly a revolving door type of business. There is little to no potential to advance unless you are in the "in" crowd. The work expectations required by every staff is unreasonable. The only possition that requires little to no training and also pays the least is Night Security. This possition can be done by a trained monkey and in that they pay the workers as little as possible. When complaints come in they answer by saying "there is the door". This is a non profit company that makes millions and only the top 1% ever get raises or bonues. Pay freeze ineffect and has been for the last 3-4 years. The money comes in but the pay does nothing. WHen a raise is given the insurance goes up to match the raise. Great place to work if you also want to collect welfare, WIC, or anyother support because that support will be he only thing that will put food on the table and cover your bills, unless you love working 80+ hours over time every week and do not wish to have a life.

George Junior Republic provides troubled youth with the opportunity to grow as young adults. We provide care for youth under the categories of juvenile probation and designated home services. While at George Junior Republic youth go to school, perform daily tasks such as typical household chores, life skill training, and anger management therapy. As a Clinical Manager, I oversee eleven youth in the Special Needs 12 Unit. I work with one other Clinical Manager, an aide, and my Treatment Team Coordinator. Together we provide behavior modification for the youth in our unit as they go through their daily routine. I have learned more about the developmental process of a youth than in any other setting. The most enjoyable part of my job is helping youth move through and learn from failures in their past or present. The hardest part of my job is managing crisis situations in which youth become harmful to themselves and others.
