The turnover rate is high and management wonders why. It's not just the low pay and so so benefits. It's drama, backstabbing and gossip. If the people that had been there longer would learn to be more productive, they would have less time to gossip. In addition, if more training was available, employees would be more productive. Maybe. Management depends on lackeys who want to be management to feed them information vs actually being there. And if you cross these lackeys, you will find yourself on the chopping block. Nor should one try to do the right thing at the clinic that was recently renovated-a new building doesn't mean a new attitude. The switchboard acts like she knows it all,yet has been moved from one department to another-and wonder why no one wants to work with her-the phone is the last place to put her. She likes to come to the front and tell people how to do their work yet no one wants her up there. Her holier than thou in your face bully style has not place in the modern work environment, but so-called management lets her do whatever.  She prefers to answer her personal phone vs the business phone. Nursing management plays at being busy but refuses to make real decisions because she is worried about hurting any feelings, including the switchboard. And medical is a former drunks who almost lost his license and why he is not a real dr in the real world. The yearly evaluations are jokes unless they want to fire you. One individual got the highest marks for 'supervisor' yet was fired less than one month later for 'failure to manage his people'. So much for HIS manager's opinion. Guess former coworker's could not save him yet one more time.

I have been an employee with this department for over 10 years. I have worked both on the local level & at the state level, so I’ve seen operations from both perspectives. Unfortunately there is a systemic breakdown in leadership within this Dept. Since I’m a firm believer that ownership & accountability starts at the top, I believe a lack of leadership on all levels is a big reason this Dept is not a good place to work. A high rate of attrition has been occurring in the workforce over the years. Even during the pandemic when people were losing jobs, several people in my work area alone resigned. There’s currently 4 or 5 open district health director positions in the state. This is the first time I know of this happening. People don’t leave jobs because of the job; people leave jobs most times because of people. The culture at DPH is terrible & has been for long time. I like what I do, but the culture & lack of knowledgeable leadership that has come & gone makes this a not ideal place to work. There is so much pettiness that goes on, pointless meetings, & priority areas that should be important are often overlooked. It’s mind blowing sometimes what goes on here. But like the federal govt, it’s a lot of wastefulness that happens in state govt also (at least in Georgia). I am only here because of circumstances but I am making plans to leave very soon. 

I have been employed here with GA DPH for almost 2 years. I can't even begin to explain how amazing this organization is. This organization sets its employees up for success and the next level through various professional development opportunities. It's amazing to see how far my knowledge of program management has come from when I first began here. Flexible hours, retirement counseling, investment counseling, discounted health insurance through the wellness program. Teamwork here is spectacular. You are treated like an adult. No micromanaging. Compensation is ok. Better than Alabama, though. You don't receive monetary compensation for volunteer time, but you receive comp time. Thgey also offer time for employees to pursue educational opportunities and ask for a time for time. For example, if I take a few days a week off for school, they ask that I repay the time upon completion of degree. (looking into becoming an RN) This organization is definitely competitive as you move up the ladder, however, you are consistently being coached and evaluated to ensure that you have every opportunity to improve on all facets of your job. It is a stress free environment for the most part. The agency is definitely mission driven and everyone is on board.

The work hours of 9-5 and generous holidays are nice. HR will NOT tell you that you need to keep 40 hours of vacation pay on the books in order to get direct deposit, and KEEP those 40 hours once you get direct deposit. Management doesn't tell you that either, but then again, they are rarely there in order to tell anyone much of anything helpful.  But that is ok-you will have coworkers that will tell you plenty and talk plenty about you behind your back.  Lackeys report to management and are rewarded for doing so with 'merit raises' that no one else seems to get merit.  The switchboard would rather come up front and belittle/bully the staff (not her job, by the way) with her 'in your face, I am right always' attitude. Maybe the reason she is in the back...out of public view, but on her personal phone gossiping about what happens at work. Nursing management refuses to tell her anything, which IS the management's job. Include low pay, no set lunch hours since the clinic is open all the day, add a generous sprinkle of office love affairs, delete any training or advancement potential and you have one new clinic that only received a public facelift but still can't get their heating or hot water working.

I have been an employee at DPH for several years, with experience at both local and state levels. Working here for many years has given me a historical perspective on the culture and leadership of this organization. It would be a much better place to work if there were true authentic transformational leaders within the dept., starting at the very senior leadership level. Unfortunately, this is not the case at DPH. There needs to be a drastic shift in the culture of this dept. as a whole in order to recruit & retain quality workers to do the work that is needful for the citizens of Georgia. Every job has its pros & cons, but this organization is really lacking in many areas, especially in regards to leadership & communication. The real purpose of what's important often gets lost in bureaucracy and "red tape", and nothing gets done because of this. 

Depending on your section a typical day here consist of maintain positive control of Specimens ensuring all testing is done correctly. Ive learned that the Quality of your work is better than speed. Management depending on which section you belong to have great expectations, but the Directors are a little out of touch of how the lab is actually running which cause frustrations on lab equipment to conduct the testing. The Culture of the job is almost like being in high school at times but depending on your attitude you can entertain it or not. There are some workers here that this is all they know and cause some frustrations with what you were trained to do and how they actually do it. The hardest part of the job is waiting on approval for items so you can continually run your and conduct your testing. I enjoy some of the lab events they try to do to build Esprit de corp.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I worked for gdph for 47 months as a contact tracer and case investigator and loved every moment there.  I had awesome coworkers and bosses. It was a very rewarding experience.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The job was not stressful at all.  I loved my job and the best part of the was working from home and the flexibility.  There was absolutely no pressure or stress.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture was awesome.  It was always about teamwork, speaking truth to power, and sharing ideas.
Our district meetings were always enlightening and informative and we would share shout outs for our coworkers and team leaders.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Some days were busy and on some days it was slow but consistent.  I always had work to do.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The opportunity to serve my community from the comfort of home.


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
This was not a high stress position.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work culture here was very collaborative. Wherever someone could take on additional cases to help others, there was a flow. Flexibility flowed freely.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Sign in, check assignments for the day, work through your cases via phone communication interviews, document required information from the interview for contact tracing purposes, confirm those the interviewed person had come into contact with. Enter all data, document time worked, update spreadsheets when assigned, contact medical facilities when assigned, attend virtual meetings.

A typical day includes checking emails, taking phone calls, and processing work. Management has a tendency to punish those that disagree with them. Those outside of leadership positions try to make working here a positive experience for each other (we often have to vent to each other since those "above" us aren't interested in our well-being), but the leadership doesn't appear to be concerned with morale or retention. During the application process and orientation, a lot of promises and policies are listed- take them with a grain of salt. Take any promises with the expectation of them never being kept. If there is an HR issue, do not contact HR until you have another job lined up.

most of the times was very busy .Real challenging work, very interesting to find out what pathogen microorganism was present in the sample.I  have learned a lot about speciation of Salmonella and Shigella identification and speciation.There was not a manager  in situ,but this cause sometimes a delayed in Lab results , Due to this I have to  work extra to  resolve the  problems  and there was not any help from coworkers .The hardest part of the job was set up of Biochemicals for microorganism confirmation,this was very tedious and time consuming  ,also the technology used at the department is pretty old. The most enjoyable part of the Job was when I did extra test to find new isolates that we did not have before.
