Overall Gerber is a excellent place to work for a certain type of person. It is call center. That means you answer 1000’s of calls a month, or your job is focused on the business cycle log those callers. They keep it positive as they can for being about a sensitive topic (death). There is a great team culture, and your team mates will be so supportive. They are generally accepting of new ideas, and open to change if it makes sense. There are some strong negatives which will be listed below that really undermine all the effort they put into building a strong work culture. If you want to move up, you need to act like it by being a high performer. Your ability to move to any other job in the company depends on your ability to perform well on a metric system. You need to be nice, you need to be fast, and you need to sell well. It must be all 3, all the time. It is also a sad job, hearing about death so much. I didn’t really expect it to that level before I started. 

Leadership is where my true disappointment lies. The lack of an inclusion committee to ensure created policies are fair for all employees is disappointing in a company who focuses on culture so heavily. That is where this company stands to fail, on the backs of their employees. A archaic PTO policy (cannot be used for sick time without counting against you for attendance), and too many systems to ensure compliance. The stress level of this job deserves PTO to be used without it counting against you. There are days my body physically can’t handle hearing about another deceased child. We deserve that. 

The remote culture is excellent, they really have it figured out. They were remote before COVID, and you can tell by how well they operate. 

Benefits are above average, and I appreciate that we administer our own health plan. As someone who has complex health needs I find it very helpful to speak with a coworker about my problem with my insurance over a faceless company somewhere. They also offer a pension, PTO (limited useage), flexible schedules, and a slew of other offerings. The benefits are affordable as well. 

Pay is below industry average. I did take a pay cut to come here in hopes that it would be a good career decision. That I have not yet decided. Some aspects of the company are so good I could never imagine leaving. The not so good aspects go against my personal ethical beliefs and I don’t know if I can concede how I feel for a job. 

I take incoming calls and assist with payments, policy changes, work in an offer for new products and/or increase in coverage. I learned a lot about sailing products. Management is great and there for you and always pushing you to improve. The people and culture is great and fun, monthly meetings are great. Hardest part of the job is taking back to back calls and dealing with simple things like payments and loans. Also meeting my goals to make more money isn't as easy as I was lead to belive. It took me a 2 months to improve my slaes numbers since I never done it before but the following month I went over the minimum but apparently I didn't take enough payments from new policies and it prevented me from meeting my goal. The 4th and 5th month I worked hard to meet all that but I didn't meet my customer resolution and when I brought it up to my manager she helped me review calls and gave suggestion. Never missed that goal before and the second month not meeting it I was connected with a specialist and found that only 1 question is asked on the survey about resolution that was there issue resolved Yes or No. No addition question about how they felt the associate attempted to resolve the issue that would of helped me make my numbers. Also the calls I was given a bad score was reviewed and even the specialist didn't understand why I was given a bad review on the survey. On top of this I constantly have system issues, went through 3 laptops and 4 docking stations but the company consistently has company wide issues and shutting off phones. They micromanage your time. They will not recalculate your numbers.

Management - Disconnected to what really happens on a day to day basis. Pushed to meet or exceed sometimes unrealistic goals set by the company. Inconsistent language regarding expectations and moral values.

Hardest Part of Job - Keeping Congruent - being asked by the company to meet numbers and sometimes sacrificing what is correct for the customer/client in order to keep your job. Never knowing when the company will decide that you are the next person to be walked out of the building for any reason they deem necessary.

Most Enjoyable part of the job - Remembering at the end of the day the many conversations I've had with different people explaining Life Insurance and it's purpose. Knowing that I was instrumental in assisting them in their decision to protect their families financial future in the event of their death by purchasing the needed and affordable life insurance for their situation.

I’ve been with Gerber Life Insurance for 15 years, and from the very beginning, I knew this wasn’t just a job, it was the start of a career. I began in the Contact Center, and over time, I’ve worked my way up to a management position. The journey has been incredibly rewarding, thanks in large part to the people around me.

What stands out most is the culture of support and growth. From day one, I’ve felt encouraged not just to succeed, but to thrive. Leaders and peers alike have invested in my development, celebrated my wins, and challenged me to take on more, always with the belief that I could do it. What is the best part of working at the company?
Family Business feel , big insurance company backing.  If your a by the books person it will resonate with you.  Be prepared as all insurance is changing fast.  If you close often you will succeed.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
metrics versus revenue.  You can have high revenue but miss out on 35% of your pay (bonus) by not including 'products'.  Be a team player sell every product or miss out on your pay.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Changing but determined.  The name brand buys a traditional family caring look and feel.  The numbers and compliance are the real grind.  Learn the words and match the flow and verbage as dictated by management.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Mondays are heavy.  Saturdays seem like a good idea but are slow so the calls can kill your stats.  Be available and take breaks and lunch when scheduled to stay out of trouble.  Always keep up with all communication and training documents regardless if you deem them important.  Be ready at any time to be dumped on with back to back calls or opposite 40 minutes no calls.  The late shift has the best opportunity for reaching most of the USA for incoming calls and not just billing problems.

I am currently employed as a Life Insurance Underwriter with Gerber Life Insurance. I have been employed in this position since December of 2003. As my resume indicates, my education includes an Associate of Arts, a Bachelor of Arts, and a Masters of Business Administration.

My position with Gerber Life Insurance involves extensive research and documentation capabilities in a fast-paced/goal oriented work environment. My daily responsibilities include the review of medical, non-medical and social history of individuals applying for life insurance. This assessment process involves a strict compliance to both internal and external underwriting guidelines.

Also, this position includes the training and supervision of the processors and assistant underwriters assigned to my team. The underwriting of life insurance policies with Gerber Life requires efficiency in the navigation of multiple websites with a strict adherence to established time constraints, mandating the ability to efficiently multi-task on a daily basis.

I have worked here for 5+ years including through a big sale during which Gerber was sold to W&S. Ever since- it has been stressful. Employees feeling overworked because we lack agents, the pay is decent for an entry career job, however knowing what new agents being hired in are offered it makes you feel very unappreciated. Working in sales is always hit or miss however sales takes way too many service related calls and it affects our targets when multiple existing customers use our apply request option in the IVR to make payments on their policies and will straight up tell you that they don’t want a new policy. The service agents are also required to sell which adds more stress for them when they have many other goals to meet. 

Most supervisors want the same thing as the service/sales agents however processes take forever to move along and I feel as if W&S is mostly to blame for the length of time it takes to make changes or to grow in the company. Writing this review- it makes me wonder if W&S will take all of this feedback and hopefully make some changes. 

On days I opened I would have to count the work-load for the day and prepare things for everyone else.  I would make phone calls all day to potential customers to obtain additional information needed for their applications in order to determine whether we could issue it or not.  I learned a great deal about insurance and working in a team situation.  Management was fair and co-workers were good at what they did and we all helped achieve our goals.  The hardest part of the job just before I left was that they would change the way they wanted things done almost on a daily basis so it was hard to know what was expected of us and I pride myself on giving it 110% at what I do.  The most enjoyable part of the job was being part of a team and knowing that I was providing a service to customers that would better their lives.

From the moment I stepped into the office at Gerber Life, the environment was extremely unwelcoming and no employee I saw seemed to be enjoying their day. Management is a joke, they don't trust you, they don't value you and they don't respect you. You are given different answers to the same questions and are left to fend for yourself if you make a mistake. I have gone a whole week without someone saying one word to me, not even a "good morning." You have absolutely zero amount of freedom and can't even get a drink if it isn't during your scheduled break. Nobody treats you like an adult. You are paid nothing to do a demanding job. I am embarrassed to work here and am actively looking for a position elsewhere. Do yourself a favor and do not put yourself through a position at this company.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The company deceives agents into thinking they are in sales but they convert you into a customer service agent and the bonus structure is set up for agents to fail and not bonus. This company charged employees to park at the garage for 2 years when due to COVID  the CDC had mandated everyone towork from home.  The company refused to stop auto pay for parking and  kept aking parking  fees  or of our pay checks never reimbursing any employees. A horrible unethical page to work.

This is an institutionalized company similar to jail.
