A typical day at Gesa was getting to work at 8:30 and getting all the computers up and running. I was also in charge of opening the main vault door and getting the folders we need for that day. I would take my cash drawer and lock it up at my station for the day. I was also in charge of processing the ATM deposits from the nigh before and sending the report to our accounting department. Around 8:45 my other co-workers would arrive and we could get into the safe to pull money orders, gift cards, travelers checks, and fill our cash orders. The most enjoyable part of my job was helping the customers because they were so nice and just the funniest people. I only had respect for one of my fellow co-workers there because she truly busted her butt every single day when all the other girls wandered and did not do as much as she. She was the only one that I could count on to help me to make sure all the things that needed to get done got done so we can leave on time. The hardest part about working at this branch is that it had been going through a lot of changes and gone through 3 different managers in less than a month. The manger that was finally permanently there did not do a good job because he was taken advantage of and walked all over by the girls that never did anything. This branch was ran by 2 girls not by the manager. What I learned about working at Gesa is that it doesn't always pay off to be the hardest worker because the people that were getting promotions and raises were the people that didn't do much. I hope that other companies take advantage and recognize the hard working employees.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Executive want to consistently improve technology and want to move the company forward; however they are disorganized, siloed and change direction like the wind which causes frustration for staff/system level personnel. I was part of the merger so this might be a tad bit biased but I also got no training or direction in my new role and struggled since then. Depending on the department, both of these components might not be an issue.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
lack of training in the beginning, lack of effective communication on projects or changes being implemented until the last minute and the projects/changes are constant. Leadership will make a decision on a solution or vendor but will then want to change requirements leading to frustration and delayed projects only to then want to change to a new vendor/direction right away so the process starts over.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
depending on the position: remote, hybrid or in person. This will vary depending on where you work-headquarters has a very different feel than Spokane, Tukwila, Lynnwood. overall culture is the same as any other credit union.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
trying to juggle production/frontline issues or questions, managing two different systems, plus asks to be in a project management role/testing/implementing changes and improvements. Usually there are multiple projects going on at once so lack of resources and time are an every day occurrence.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Buyer beware-culture issues, lack of consistency and drama

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
In/out crowd, directive leadership, lack of mentoring/more driver culture, performative accountability and lack of transparency. Not valuing employees and seeing them as tools/cogs in a machine.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic at the branch level. It's often a gatekeeper mentality towards progression, advancement or self-growth. More importantly very clique heavy, you'll be treated well if liked, drug through the mud if disliked. Its a very cult of personality driven organization. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Changing goal posts, you can have a branch manager decide this is the way they want the branch to run, then decide this doesn't work, or that the way one employee does things is okay but the other is not okay to do so. If you are in the in crowd, you are given far more leeway and grace. If you are not, if you give any feedback or pushback, then you are considered a leper. Guidance is often based on who is liked, or preferred, coaching is often the same route.

If you live in Eastern Washington then Gesa might be a good place to work. If you live in King or Pierce counties, then there are plenty of  places to work that are better than this. 

Supervisors have a great deal of autonomy and the ability to abuse that power. If you have a good supervisor and department head then your stay here could be enjoyable, but I've spoken to many other employees who have stories about broken promises from management and low pay. Company does not always live up to its stated ethical standards.

The corporate culture here is different than what you expect in Western Washington. It feels less professional and more small-town. There are good old boys and girls networks. Management is very conservative and innovation is not a part of corporate culture.

Computer systems are kinda second-rate, like they must have gotten a good deal on that software because it doesn't totally work right.

One nice thing I will say is that it is a community-based financial institution so you are not working to serve the billionaire class here.

In my time here I’ve watched the company go from truly caring about its customers/members to seeing them strictly as numbers. The CEO and upper management have also changed their WFH policy starting in 2025 in order to increase “collaboration”. The CEO and upper management claim they care about work life balance and family yet require us to come back into the office and work on holidays like Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. Bottom line is this is just a corporation like the rest of them that only care about money and using their employees. They are constantly hiring from the outside instead of hiring within. Pay is lackluster in comparison to similar Credit Unions and Banks. I will say they have decent benefits and PTO, but they are behind the curve while other companies are quickly catching up or exceeding them in this area now. As much as I would like to recommend this place when I first started, I would no longer do so. 

Think twice before applying for the collections department job openings. Horrible management. They only care about themselves and try to make themselves look good. They try to act like your friend only to get information from you then use it against you or the person they were being nosey about. When you do something wrong it's felt for months because management won't even acknowledge you. There are clear favorites in the department and if you aren't one of them then you are treated like you are nothing and easily replaceable. Which has been said many of times to us. Then when it comes to getting raises they act like you were given the highest raise possible only to find out that your measly raise shouldn't even be considered a raise. Keep the raise it does nothing for anyone. Doesn't make a difference. If you are going to give raises make it at least noticeable on a paycheck. Again avoid collections at all costs unless you want to be stressed and never be praised for doing something good within the department. 

First off, management was new from what I heard. In the time I was there, it was a terrible experience. My first couple of days there, I basically figured out what and when and how I needed to do things on my own. Management wasn’t welcoming and didn’t feel the need to explain any transitioning process. Just kind of threw me in there and I figured it out my own. From the get go, it has been very cliquey and very toxic. If you are not in the circle, you are out of it. The work place actual PHYSICAL environment was very nice, clean, and roomy. Members were decent, I didn’t have many issues there. And the job itself was easy!  It’s just dealing with the general gossip and bullying from staff, along with the lack of action or accountability from management to these staff members, caused me to dislike going in, much less WANT to work in the toxic environment. 

I've been here for a few years and in a few different departments. There have been ups and downs and some jobs that I've liked more than others. I'm currently in a position that I absolutely love with a great team and highly knowledgeable management. There are so many areas of opportunity within this organization and constantly growing. Upper management is highly focused on employee retention and making this a great place to work. Staying positive through transitions, building relationships with your fellow coworkers and participating in Gesa's training programs have paid off! If you're looking for a place to grow professionally, Gesa is the place to be!

Definitely a positive environment to work for.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the variety of duties for my position. I open accounts, talk to members about consumer loans and help members with any inquiries or maintenance they need with their finances. 

Hard part of the job is the schedule. Sometimes it is tough not having a consistent schedule.

A typical day is that always short handed hard to get job done when always filling at other positions. was able to learn a lot about financial institutions.  Management are all about numbers.  They do not care about anything else.  The employees are over worked and very tired.  The hardest part of the job was trying to have a workplace/ life balance.  The schedule is never the same from week to week, will work almost every Saturday but will not have the same day off in the middle of the week.  Will work 4 hours one day, 9 1/2 hours the next day.  Not a consistent schedule.  The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting and helping members.
