Good Samaritan Medical Center

The job was vey busy and was neve dull.  We acually checked in patients for the doctors to see patients.  We were attached to the hospital so we were part of the hospital.  If the patient was critical hen we had to do the admision part for the patient and wheeled the over to the hospital.  If they were in a critical state then we had to call a "code " and they came over with the perimedics and they picked the up and took them over to the hospital.  We got an hour lunch which was enjoyable and we got FREE BREAKFAST AND FREE LUNCH everyday during the time I worked there from 1996 to 1999.  The hardest part of the job was that at the time everone was not treated the same, which was not fair.  The people who worked for the doctors who had been there the longest got paid alot more money and got better raises and those of us new secretaries.  And we were all working very hard doing the same job as everyoen else.  We checked in the patients, we checked out the patient, collect co-payment, made appointments, did referrals, confirmed appointments, made up charts, confirmed insurance, got the doctor for phone calls, called in prescriptions, took messages for the doctors and nurses, and too many more to mention.  I left the job because my doctor left the state to go back to Indiana to take care of his Mother and I was ready for a change so i went to work for a Dermatologist two weeks later.

A typical day at work would go by so fast! I learned so much about getting a detailed and accurate patient history and how crucial the history is to the physical exam and selection of diagnostic modalities. Management is always supportive to continuing medical education and the workplace culture is one of public service. The hardest part of the job was working as a disabled person on call at all hours of the night being called in to rule out  a DVT or whatever and then not being late for the following day shift. The most enjoyable part of the job was being at the leading edge of a new non invasive diagnostic modality more accurate than angiography and helping people enjoy their golden years and retirement with peace of mind answer all their questions and help them understand their own role in healing, besides learn from their experiences, Every one has something to teach the rest of us. To be able to include bilateral vertebral arterial blood flow with every carotid artery exam was the bomb! Vertebral arteries have similar Doppler qualities to those of the internal carotid arteries.

I worked in preop department. I loved my job and was there for over 10 years. Typical day at work was prepping patients for surgery, asking questions, patient assessment, computer charting, starting IV's, giving medications - oral, or IV. Communicating w/ MD and anesthesia, OR nurses was a large part of the job. I learned a lot. Management was average - typical for a large company. Culture was supportive and caring, everyone helped out to get the job done. Hardest part of the job was a high volume of patients, multi-tasking, patients under stress regarding surgery but putting them at ease was rewarding. Patient to nurse ratio was good - about 4 to 6 patients per nurse depending on acuity. I loved my job, my coworkers were wonderful (well, most anyway), and the patient's were appreciative of you. 

I loved my job because I loved working with the patients in my department. I learned a lot while I was there because I started there through an internship. A lot changed on my unit, specifically my amazing manager as well as my mentor and internship supervisor were moved onto another unit and I no longer had the gift of support, good management and true collaboration. The unit was taken over to be run by someone who was not competent and not ethical.

At this time, I am back to work at Good Sam, but in a temporary position that my old boss that had left offered me. I am working towards finding the perfect job for me.

As long as I am working with the population that I love to work with in the field that I am most passionate about, I will be happy. It is just so much more rewarding to have a collaborative team that works well together for the benefit of the greater good of the patients.

The atmosphere at GS was friendly and the staff was engaging. The orientation process was long and detailed but provided the tools I needed. Overnight on call position was a 14 hr shift with a sleep room available. Sleep room was not user friendly. The bathroom was shared with another room which made sleeping almost impossible. The dead bolt locks were there for privacy but they sounded like the locks on a jail cell making it a noisy night. The schedule was difficult because other staff could switch the schedule with me and never let me know. One whole weekend was scheduled once a month meaning I was at work 14 hrs a day for 4 consecutive days. 
I left after 4 months because I wanted to spend more time with family and be more involved with my local church. I could highly recommend GS to anyone but make sure you understand how much is required of you. Especially if you are going to be an on call chaplain.

What is the best part of working at the company?
This company provided me and my family with finances to support us. I also formed great relationships with my co-workers both on the job and outside the job. My department  coordinator was very compassionate and understanding when my mother fell ill with cancer.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part about working  at the company was when Covid came around. We worked and overwhelming amount of hours under difficult conditions.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment and culture was rather friendly and on many occasions we stood up for each other and had each other backs.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day was fun at times and we all worked hard to make it as pleasant as possible. We took pride in our thorough productivity.

There are a lot of great nurses here and a few that are lazy. The problem is there are so many nurses scheduled that we all lose hours for low census. It is very rare that we get to work all three of our shifts per week.

The benefits are very expensive and the nurses lose hours for low census

for the most part the environment is good. but this unit does not allow for any suggestions about how to improve the unit. "it's always been done that way" but not a the best way

We start with an absolute full load of patients and run around putting out fires for 4 hours while there are three nurse home on low census that could have come in to help make it a better night

THE RESPECT THE STAFF HAD FOR ONE ANOTHER

NOT ENOUGH WORK FOR THE CHAPLAINS.

TEAM WORK BETWEEN STAFF AND STAFF AND PATIENTS.  IT WAS A SHARING INFORMATION AND UNDERSTANDING EACH AREA OF THE HOSPITAL.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
CHECKING ON PATIENT'S SPIRITUAL NEEDS, BE IT, ACTIVELY LISTENING, PRAYER FOR PATIENT'S PREPARING FOR SURGERY.  CHARTING EACH PATIENT INTO THE THEIR PROFILE.  GETTING INFORMATION FOR EXITING CHAPLAIN.  MAKING ROUNDS AT END OF EACH SHIFT.  UPDATING CHAPLAIN COMING ON DUTY.  GETTING PRAYERS FROM CHAPEL LEFT FROM FAMILY.

7AM start, run tests on the sterilization machines unload the linen cart stock up the prep and pack area
Look at the Operation Room schedule 
Check that we have surgical kits in and sterilized for the days O.R Schedule
Meet surgical equipment reps to sign in or give back any loaner kits.
Check the decontamination room and run tests on all the washers.
Head to the area I'm assigned too for that day


I started at Good Samaritan Hospital in 2018, as a student in need of 400 clinical hours. 

Coming in as a travel nurse at Good Samaritan there didn't seem to be many that wanted to take the time to show you where things were or orient you to anything. It was mostly, figure things out for yourself. Not much teamwork what so ever. The most enjoyable part of my job was working in the heart and vascular units. The not so good things were; no teamwork, don't count on breaks, and definitely don't count on any block scheduling even if they tell you they will. It was an on, off, on, off type of schedule the entire assignment. I ended up driving almost daily, 3 hours to work and 3 hours home after a 12 hour shift. It wasn't a terrible place to work once I oriented myself. The biggest thing was the scheduling. I was tired all the time. Never had a stretch of days off.
