Goodwill North Central Texas

Unless you don't mind being severely underpaid for the amount of work that you will do for Goodwill I would not apply for a job here. Regardless of the position you will be doing tasks that were not in your job description or spoken of in your interview. They make it seem like a wonderful place to work, and with a good charitable cause. On the contrary the system in place at Goodwill is designed for them to maximize profit while you do all the work for minimum wage. In the case of my position (Donation attendant) you will be told you will simply take donations and sort them with other tasks being to support the production team and other small janitorial-like jobs (cleaning backroom and bathrooms at the end of the night), sounded easy enough. However you will be severely over worked and if you're reliable you will be covering for shift-mates most of the week as the turnover rate is so high because of the work to pay ratio. You will soon find most of the other tasks around your store are falling on you or those in your same position. 
         In one instance the managers at my store eventually had us pricing all of the heavy furniture items (A job I had been told was entirely up to management as it dealt with the prices of goods on the floor) and putting them on the floor at our own discretion with little to no direction or supervision which led to many younger inexperienced workers to injure themselves and only the reliable workers were left doing the work of a whole team. Management will make mistakes and leave it to the underpaid to fix, many times those in charge of scheduling would make huge mistakes, in my own experience forgetting to schedule my vacation hours even though they were approved and confirmation was made that i would have time off, I ended up not receiving any pay for that time simply because a manager "forgot". I was asked by the AREA LEADER of the SanTan Redesign store, who I will add was extremely rude to everyone she worked with except some of her superiors and female cohorts, to wear a plastic garbage bag when it was raining outside and we were going to be doing extended work outside (home delivery drop-off) because we didn't have parkas on the sales floor and as she described she had "no other solution". I was asked to mop and clean urine several times from the floor and waste bin of the restrooms when a repeat offender customer continued to do it over the course of several weeks because the management was too lazy to look at the cameras and figure out who was doing it. No matter how hard I tried it often felt like more was expected of me and I felt like I was doing a bad job even though I knew I was doing my best. I could go on and on about my horrible experiences working for Goodwill for 1 YEAR but these examples should aid you in steering clear.
      TL:DR Goodwill is literally one of the worst places to work. At an entry level minimum wage position, management will find a way for you to do all the work that isn't paperwork or book keeping and depending on the manager will give you little to no appreciation and in some extreme situations will actually be rude and disrespectful to you. You will be doing jobs and tasks that should be for another position entirely and were left out of your job description and interview walk-through. Unless you really need a job that will hire fast do not work for Goodwill.

I worked for two stores before moving onto a job with higher compensation.  My work week was regular.  I'll be honest, this is a non-profit company with a for-profit attitude.  You have daily quotas that you have to make, and if you don't make them, you get the axe.  I saw too many managers move through, which doesn't help with a feeling of having job security.  Yes, there was room for advancement, but I was kind of glad that I was not in management because they constantly are moved around and turned over from being fired for not meeting store quotas.  Overall it wasn't the worst job I had, but I got too stressed out from the quota demands, and moved to cashier.  I explained to my boss that it felt like corporate was holding a hostage, and if I didn't make my quota demands they would take out my hostage.  When I got into a routine of my price-points and item count, corporate changed our formula, and I was then producing less than half of what I originally was (Originally 800-1000 items/day).  Things were better for me stress-wise when I went to cashier, but there's a quota that you have to meet on accepting donations.  Speaking of, if you take a tip, it has to be donated to corporate, or it's considered theft.  A couple wanted to tip me $50 at Christmas, and I had to turn it down, even though I really needed the money.  People would complain about our prices, but we had a certain price quota in addition to the item quota needs.  Unfortunately we don't get to go into people's homes and hand-pick items, so this can hurt you when you keep getting items that are "maybe" worth a dollar, as opposed to items worth $50.  I eventually went to use the career center (which was a joke), and had a member of upper management call me because I noted I was looking for employment.  When he asked what I currently did I straight up told him I worked as a cashier for their company and was looking for other work because I couldn't make enough to support myself and my child.  I didn't get another call-back, but didn't lose my job either.  It's a job that I wouldn't recommend staying in long-term, but the hours were solid, and the pay was solid.  You don't make enough to support yourself, and you have to rely on government assistance to supplement healthcare and nutrition.  You don't get two days off, but I got every Wednesday and alternating Sunday/Mondays off, so it was consistent.

The process to start took a month between 1st interview and a day long class that has NOTHING to do with drivers and very un nessasary.  It's all about store operations, if I wanted to work in the stores, I wouldn't be driving a semi. 

Worst tractors possible for drop and hook work
Automatics with no power, always breaking down
5th wheel that doesnt unlock after pulling out of trailers so expect to set your brakes and jump out to unlock them just to back under another trailer
Just to swith out a trailers which should be simple, requires you to set your breaks and get out just to unlock your 5th wheel an ADDITIONAL 4 times above the drop and hook of 2 trailer moves. 
And all in the dark without a backup light.
The back up lights on any tractor does not work when your behind a store in a dark area at night that's pretty important and unsafe without. 

To many trailers and tractors in disrepair all the time 

It's all slip seating and you never know what piece of junk you'll have to drive every shift
They keep temp drivers on all the time because they cant fill and keep regular drivers
Then they let temp drivers pick and choose the best truck they want and leave a company driver left with the bottom of the barrel truck 

They dont pay attention to the workload for the shift and have temps show up, taking your good trucks and your hours you could go home after a few hours yet there temps get a 8 hour pay regardless 

Basically, you be much better off working for the temp agency. 

Alot of dock and back areas of stores are ridiculously set up and not equip for semis to back into.
Some areas behind stores:walls, fences, garbage cans, sidewalks, water main etc etc have been hit numerous times because it's almost impossible to back a trailer into. Then if you do hit something be prepared to take a drug test and not work until it comes back clean
Which is also crazy because no ones on drugs or drinking, they are just expected to do what even OSHA would say we should not be doing.

The dispatches are a nice group but they are clueless to Class A work and know nothing except to give you a slip to the next drop and hook.

WORST PLACE IVE EVER WORKED!!

Loved my job as a cashier years ago. Had great managers back then. None of them are with the company any longer. Culture was great; they used to make everyone feel appreciated and everyone wanted to do a good job in return. After the minimum wage spike, they fired an entire position, lowering morale among managers. People with tenure that were already making what was the new minimum or more, their wages stayed the same as all of the new hires, lowering morale among hourly workers. Promote many, many incapable people to management, then do not invest in their managers. Only store managers are treated as being valued, but what is supposed to trickle down, does not. Many are emotional, unprofessional and blatantly disrespectful to coworkers. Store managers power-trip, many assistant store managers tend to micromanage. Favoritism is a thing. Status is everything, its clique-y. In order to succeed in the company you have to pretend to be BFFs with a certain group of people. Otherwise they will 'weed you out'; basically be unfair or mean to you until you quit, or look for an excuse to fire you. It is such a shame because many good workers who loved their jobs got burned; leaving the floor to the snakes.
 Some stores still have good managers. Some managers actually use the allotted credit for lunches or snacks for the employees on sale days or special days. Some.
 Morning shifts are nice because you go home at the time you are supposed to; closing: not so much. Also, if your manager is one of those ones making a poor schedule, he/she will most likely schedule more in the AM and leave the closers short-handed, to clean up after everything left by the openers.
  STRONGEST recommendation: Take the time to know the handbook. Know the policies. Policies are mostly non-extensive and you do not want anyone to try to take advantage of that.
 Must be quick on your feet. A lot of moving around part of all in-store positions and teamwork is a must.

Insures that receipt is offered to each donor, regardless of size of donation.
Safeguards company property including donated goods.
Maintains the placement of all merchandise and maintains the organization of the donation center.
Sort incoming donations based on general type of merchandise.
Manages the flow of merchandise within the donation center.
May perform marketing efforts for donation center, including but not limited to shaking banners street-side, and distributing flyers.
Actively check and manage e-mail.
Appropriately label all gaylords for correct merchandise type for storage, pick-up, and transport.
Clean restrooms, parking lot, donation area. Sweep and spot mop donation center floor.
Keeps supervisor informed of problems and makes appropriate recommendations.
Assists in loading or unloading of merchandise onto/off trucks or trailers as needed.
Create manifest for shipping and transport of outgoing gaylords including trucks and trailers.
Reports all non-employee and employee injuries in a timely fashion including calling injury hotline, incident reports, and notifying store manager.
Safe guards company property, including donated goods. Reports any incidents of theft, pre-selection, misappropriation or unauthorized possession of company property. Understands that any donated merchandise whether saleable or not is the property of Goodwill Industries of Central Arizona and has no authorization to authorize giving it away for any reason.
Attend scheduled meetings and trainings.
Responsible for following and ensuring all safety rules are complied with and appropriate safety equipment is used. Ensures work areas are maintained in a clean, uncluttered, hazard free condition. Immediately takes action and/or reports any unsafe or potential hazards.
Other duties as assigned.

As an employee of goodwill, I have learned a few things. They are very accepting of people from all different backgrounds and identities. I have also learned that money is very important to them. We are asked to ask the customer to round their change on all transactions and we are not supposed to change prices for customers either. The company itself has treated me well and fair I would say thus far. The management at this specific location has had its worries as I have seen managers give 4 hour notice that they were quitting to a manager committing inappropriate behavior. The pay is minimum wage, so if you are not looking for that, I would not work here because everyone gets paid the same. Hours are also not consistent here either. If you have open availability than you could be scheduled to open than close than open all consecutively. Especially with retail it is also important to note that you will most likely not get most holidays or weekends off. Also if you call out sick you may be reprimanded or get attitude on the phone by a manager. And if someone calls out it can really mess up the entire day/night for everyone else because of being short staffed. And at goodwill you cannot shop at your own store unless it’s an employee appreciation weekend or your birthday. Otherwise you will have to go to another location. They in my opinion have really upped prices considering most of our merchandise is like new or even has the original tags on it. 
In all, at my time at goodwill I have a had a pretty positive experience overall compared to other jobs I’ve had in the past. There is some things I would personally change, but overall goodwill is just trying there best to continue day-to-day.  

Good for a Starting job but don't expect to make it a lasting career. Although I like the fact that their Career Center really helps people. Working for them is not worth the stress. I am a very hard worker, and love to work hard, but they pay very little. For the last 3 years working for them I started at minimum wage and ended at only 9.00 an hour. To tell the truth I really enjoyed working for them the first 2 years then new management rolled in, but even before things started to change. I never worked for a company that had such strange and absurd rules. Hard work in some cases is rarely complemented. Production is always worried about losing there jobs. At times there distribution center management is poorly informed and organized, and most store and production managers are always breathing down your neck. Retail management is always stressed an I have witnessed too many to ether quit or be terminated. Working as a Donation Attendant at times you will be the only one closing at night. Management to keep budget shorts staff and cuts hours after Holiday pay in some cases and expects to get double the work out of production. At busy times OSHA safety regulations are not followed. I have witnessed workers quitting or being harassed to quit. Although I am not sure how every store is, but at a recertification meeting talking to other workers it seems like the same vibe and frustration. I am not saying do not donate to them because I think their Career Centers really can help people, but at times they really take advantage.

Working at Goodwill as an area Leader was a nightmare. I was trained by an assistant manager who was never given the tools to train a superior manager and overall it shouldn’t be their responsibility to train and develop a person in two positions above. My direct supervisor (regional director) would come into the store very rarely, only speak to the most senior management, never would address even a hello to a cashier or DA, and would bark orders down the chain of command. I saw great employees who worked hard and really liked their job but their was never any positive reinforcement for doing a job well done. My staff loved me since I was one to be very thankful and respectful, which is a very large missing piece at goodwill. The company culture is terrible, existing as a corporation only and having little to no human interaction. The entire day is quota driven, meaning it doesn’t matter if the shelves are filled with more than enough product, you print tags and shove out over priced items to hit a price average and a total piece count average per day. Never enough hours to get any real projects done so the store is always a mess. They control hours from corporate so sale Saturday is always under staffed leading to longer lines and little to no help from employees to customers on the floor. As an avid goodwill shopper I have not returned after working there and seeing the horrible working conditions they make their staff work under. At the end of the day you are just a number and no better than your last days numbers, better get that quota for a minimum wage job, no thanks, I’ll just stuff tickets in my pants so I hit my quota and I can go home.

For one, they will NOT pay you more than $13 an hour regardless of what you do, if you're lugging around furniture all day and loading trailers cleaning after everyone you're making the same amount as the person who's folding clothes.

I was a Donation Attendant for 3 years. I was very easy going and was just thankful for a job. After my first year of working 40 hour work weeks, showing up on time and covering shifts I asked for a raise and was laughed at and they said no and they could replace me. So I decided to try the promotion route and go for management so I went through cross training so I knew how to work the door by myself and tag and roll clothes when all my tasks where done I'd help with everyone elses. When it came time I asked how to be promoted and I wasn't deemed "Ready" so I learned more departments I could in the back and if they weren't going to give me a promotion maybe I can ask for a raise, after all I'm doing 3 different positions at once. Nope, was denied. I was done and realized it was a dead end job. I put in my 2 weeks notice and my hours went from 40 a week to 10 and before I left they hired a fresh off the boat manager who has never done anything with this job before. They asked if I could train her how to do stuff before I left. I refused and til this day I look at this company as the worst company to work for. I don't care about being anonymous. I worked at the Buckhorn location on Main and Recker during the years of 2016-2020

But once your in and you work in the back you soon realize they are not trying to help anyone out but themselves. Every gets donated to them, you would think they would donate the stuff thats in somewhat good condition to places where people could use them and boost peoples self confidence up to want to get up and get a job. They don't they would rather crush it and throw it away. Their reasoning because it cost them money to donate it and they would be losing money. How would they lose money? Their reason because they would have to pay someone to either drop it somewhere or someone to pick it up. But from what I know there are charities or places that will pick up for free. But they would rather spend $2000.00 a week on a compactor to crush things and throw things away that could actually help someone. And how are they helping people with the career center besides their resume which could easily be done on indeed which also helps you for free and after ur done u can apply to tons of different jobs at once. So I'm not understanding how goodwill helps people. Their prices are outrageous so its not like the less fortunate can go buy interview clothes because they still can't afford it.  Anyways after working there I have a different way I look at goodwill they are all around selfish and care about nobody but themselves and what they can get out of their employees and community.
