I worked there 10 years and just could not take it anymore. With the continued attempts to be a Trauma II hospital, pts were admitted in and out of ICU like musical beds. It didn't matter that pts were being neglected because of more critical pts. Musical beds occurred so frequently, every single night, when we would call the cardiac doctors to see if we could transfer a pt out at 0300, doctors would hang up on us! It was ridiculous and frustrating! Supervisors were ridiculous! Staffing was not always sufficient for the critical needs. Management cared nothing about staff opinions. I should have left many years ago. They catered to the new (especially 2 yrs Horry Tech nurses) as opposed to the older BSN nurses. But then again many of the management were only 2 yr nurses when they got their positions. The job was dangerous for both the RN and the pt. We had to transfer pts out so rapidly there was no time to even chart a full assessment! I had a pt dying and was called out of the room to transfer a pt out NOW> The pt died, I did not get to finish the time with the family that was needed, but the pt certainly was transferred out! The new pt wasn't even critical, was sitting up in bed laughing and was transferred out 2 hrs later!I received 2 more admissions that night. Finally, after a critical transfer out, another critical pt rolled in 30 minutes later. Instead of helping when everthing was going on crazy , a supervising 2 yr grad chose to write the situation up to satisfy her own needs. My quiet little pt in the other bed ... well, he would have been neglected if a nurse hadn't been checking on him for me.
Nothing more to say. I have no regrets leaving.

During my years at Grand Strand, I worked both day and night shift. I worked both on a surgical floor and an ICU step down unit. Shifts were always very busy with not much opportunities for breaks. Grand Strand is a Trauma Center which makes the patient loads and problems very challenging, very fast paced. This is where I developed excellent organizational skills as well as nursing skills. Grand Strand is a for-profit organization and always had high expectations of the employees. I eventually mentored new nurses and earned my Master's Degree. I did teach students from HGTC at Grand Strand as a second job. The most enjoyable parts of the job were a strong ability with nursing skills, educating patients and staff when needed and the friendships among the staff. The last couple of years were difficult due to age related issues of being a floor nurse and little opportunity for advancement from the floor to an office setting. Also, there was no time for family due to long hours and little time for recovery between shifts.

Grand strand hospital has let me move forward in my career and I could not be more thankful, but it does have its downside. Management and the hospital do not care about night shift at all! Day shift is constantly being recognized for their hard work and achievements while we as night shift are just ignored with no thanks or anything. Getting ahold of management as someone who works night shift is like talking to a brick wall, they don't care about people on nights. The only thing that keeps me staying at this job is the people I work with... I love every other person I work with at night we all get along and everyone helps out and we all work as a team on night shift... the hospital does not pay anyone good for the amount of work we all do, we are all short staff and over worked. This hospital has the potentially to be the best level 1 trauma center if the hospital would put money towards hiring new people and giving the people who have worked there rises but instead the choose to build new building and add me more rooms to stick patients without the staff

Working for a facility like Grand Strand's South Strand Medical Center made me appreciate each and every person I came into contact with during a work day. The small emergency department of South Strand had such a home-like feel that everyone knew who you were and you were never lost in the numbers like those of surrounding larger healthcare facilities. Once you are hired, it will really take drastic change, like a move out of state, for an opening because of the rapport the hospital has gained over the years. My co-workers were extended family, willing to go out of their way to make sure that things were done appropriately and that we served our customers properly. Management made sure that they were readily available to hear and comply to any voiced concerns, good or not so good. It saddens me to have to leave such a great work environment, but school had prepared me to move onward to a new state for a new step in my life.

On a typical day I had seven patients on a progressive care unit; these are patients that were stepping down from ICU. The nurse to patient ratio is terribly dangerous to both patients and to the RN. Management made schedules, I had very little down time. Because of understaffing, four days per week schedules were required. I would never work for this facility again. In fact, I drive out of town to work in a larger not-for-profit hospital. I frequently review all job sites, and Grand Strand is always hiring...they are desperate for employees because of constant turn-over. The RN's who work there are helpful, but, everyone is over-burdened. CNA's are also overworked, and there is difficulty accomplishing all tasks and taking adequate care of patients as ultimately it is the RN who must ensure all patient care is performed.

A lot has changed regarding cultural awareness on the floor since my last observation. My elderly grandparents have been in and out of many units, some that I observed and some that I did not. 
I had a wonderful experience when observing the multiple units (ICU, ER, OR, etc.), and really appreciate the staff who maintain the positivity and patience throughout their shifts. I truly enjoyed getting to know and learn from the staff on each unit. While observing, I learned that Myrtle Beach, the town I was born and raised in, is violent with a large presence of multiple illegal drugs. It truly does take a strong-willed and compassionate healthcare professional to work in the trauma bays and ER. I am very grateful for those who care for us when we are most vulnerable. Understaffed constantly and underpaid for the area. Great teamwork and staff. Horrible management. No room for advancement- manager does not give opportunity for staff to advance to SICU sister unit. Easy to get requested days off. Good work/life balance once you get accustomed to being begged to come in every day on your days off and learn to say no. High acuity patients for a stepdown unit, Nurse to patient ratio is supposed to be 4:1. Often runs 5-6:1. Would not recommend this unit as a place to work. Overall benefits are ok but a little expensive for a high deductible. Great place to learn for a new nurse. Old nurses run fast because they know better so high turnover rate for the unit.

During my time there in the pharmacy, we gave a lot of “older” staff members that were not on the updated laws or regulations that are required to be in compliance. The hospital it self does not want to reinvest in their employees. They want to hire,hire,hire. They are desperate for  nurses. What do they do for a hiring event? Have people come out to go bowling?!?! That’s not how you do it. Their parent company HCA are cheapest companies out there. Overall this is not the hospital to work for in the long term. The benfits are good overall. In the pharmacy the majority of staff have only RETAIL background. I would not trust them to fill my prescription there if your getting care there. 

I have worked here for close to 4 years. From a new grad starting at the end of covid to now- this place values profits over patient safety. Even good managers have their hands tied on what they can and cannot do for their units because division micromanages. There are good and bad residents. My job is very meaningful and I love what I do, but I have hit a wall already in how I can grow at this company and I’m only 4 years into my career. My coworkers and the patient population are the reason I have stayed this long. They would rather run every unit short and put the ER in code surge than put us on diversion at risk of getting a fine and penalized. Not the worst place to work, but has a LOT to be desired, especially with it being an HCA facility.

Grand Strand Regional Medical Center Is a great place to work. Management is very helpful and encouraging with all you do and will assist you in any way they can and if they can’t they will go out of there way to find you an answer, or the training you need to advance and succeed. This is one of the best jobs and though very challenging at times with balancing your daily responsibilities you grow with every opportunity placed in front of you. So if you like a company that pays well and recognizes and rewards work well done come and work for Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
